Why Network Marketing “Proven” Sales Techniques Don’t Work


If you’re completely new to network marketing, and have never tried to sell anything through this method before, you’re probably hearing that the company has “proven” sales techniques, and you’re probably really excited to get out and try them. If they’re proven, that must mean that you won’t have to really do anything to sell the products.


Unfortunately, “proven techniques” is a network marketing buzzword that everyone repeats, but no one really understands. People who have succeeded using those techniques, even if they came to the business with lots of sales ability and a natural skill at closing sales and finding good prospects, believe the technique work.


People who can’t succeed using these “proven” techniques leave the company, sooner or later, feeling that they just must not have done things right. Or they leave the company feeling they were lied to and that the “proven” techniques never worked for anything.  These are common Network Marketing Distributor mistakes, made time and time again by many a distributor, due to lack of knowledge.


The truth is probably a lot foggier than that. You see, people who start network marketing companies, and the people who really succeed and move high up in the company, usually have certain things in common. They’re very magnetic people, for starters. They’ve probably also worked in sales, in some function. And they have a great deal of business experience.


If you have some sales experience, and know how to market and make sales, then the techniques will work for you, if you know how to adapt them to your specific needs. The people who have “proven” these techniques did just that.


The problem starts when people who understand sales pass their techniques on to people who’ve never had a day of sales training in their lives. It gets worse when you, and other non-sales people, are told that “there is no selling.” Because network marketing is almost nothing but sales.


So you start trying to use the “proven techniques,” figure out that you can’t make money in network marketing without learning to sell, and probably (and rightfully) feel resentful that your job that involves no selling is actually exactly the opposite.


So what does work in network marketing? How can you make money? You need to understand how selling in network marketing works. If you’re thinking that you hate sales, that you don’t want to sell, that sales is a dirty word and you’d rather do anything that sells, you need to understand the good side of sales.


Why did you get into network marketing, other than the opportunity to make money? Most likely, you chose this company because you believe in their products. You believe that you can help people by sharing these products with them. “Sharing” is a good word, and network marketers use it a lot.


Sharing is good, with two caveats: You must share with people who want, need and are willing to buy your product, and you must ask them to purchase it. When you do this, if they’re right for your product and your product will help them, you’re doing them a favor.


You’re putting your product in front of them, and giving them the opportunity to buy it and make their lives better. And these are proven techniques that really do work.
