The 7 Most Likely Dog Breed Extinctions Soon...

Yes. It is Scary but true! BUT, YOU can help us...

The United Kingdom's Kennel Club has published a list of traditional British dog breeds which are believed to be in danger of extinction due to the rapid reduction in numbers of puppies registered with the Kennel Club year after year and during 2007.

The 7 breeds with the lowest number of puppy regsitration last year (2007) as listed by the UK Kennle Club are:-

  1. The Glen of Imaal Terrier
  2. The Skye Terrier
  3. The Otterhound
  4. The Greyhound
  5. The Sussex Spaniel
  6. The Smooth Collie
  7. The Sealyham Terrier

The numbers of puppies registered with th Kennel Club last year are given as:-

  1. 36
  2. 37
  3. 41
  4. 48
  5. 61
  6. 63
  7. 65

BUT, you can save this scary loss of biodiversity on our doorstep, and in-front of our fires etc!

Interesting stats, well not for the dogs in question, but interesting all the same

Of course these stats are only for the registered puppies and there will be some, I suppose, which are being bred but not registered. But, in the end these figures are surely so low that just to maintain a reasonable genetic variability in these breeds without in-breeding becoming a problem must be a big worry.

Oh! This sounds quite sad. I didn't know there were so many British dog breeds. I hope something can be done to stop this.

I was completely unaware of this. Thanks for sharing the info. Hopefully, with increased awareness, the problems can be reversed.

I notice that you showed alot of Pugs in the intro, but never really discussed them. We breed Pugs on a very small scale. We own less than ten, and only one male. Our females are healthy and strong, and the puppies start out so great, but I usually start losing one a day or two within the first week and by the time they are ready to sell, 6-8 wks. I usually have only one or two left, and they are very healthy, but the others just wind down, like an old clock. It is heartbreaking, as we get up with them at night, every night, and make sure they are all nursing, and lay there with them until they are full. We do this from the beginning. We are devastated... and have two mommy Pugs giving birth within the next couple days!!! We love our dogs, and are so sad over the loss of the puppies, not to mention the financial loss. If there is any one out there with SOLID information, PLEASE write me.

Thank you,

Kimberly Burton

How sad to think that these breeds may become extinct. There are many breeds of sheep, cattle, pigs etc that too are close to extinction because they are no longer seen as an economic asset - what a pity.

Thanks for the information.
