Female dogs can become pregnant on their estrus cycle which is also called heat cycle. Mature female dogs will normally go through the heat cycle every nine to twelve months, one or three cycle a year depending upon the dog breed.

The 1st stage is proestrus which lasts on the average of nine days for the majority of female dogs. This period of time is frequently called "pre-heat".
