Female dogs can become pregnant on their estrus cycle which is also called heat cycle. Mature female dogs will normally go through the heat cycle every nine to twelve months, one or three cycle a year depending upon the dog breed.

The 4 stages of heat cycle and Dog estrous symptoms

The 1st stage is proestrus which lasts on the average of nine days for the majority of female dogs. This period of time is frequently called "pre-heat". The symptoms for this time period is vulva swells and bloody vaginal discharge. Female dog will raise hormones such as estrogen which draws in male dogs however the female will still disapprove the males during this period.

The 2nd stage is heat which endures approximately nine to twelve days depending upon the type and size of your dog. Female dogs might still experience a discharge and will accept male dogs at this point. There will be a substantial gain in progesterone and luteinizing hormone which results in ovulation. The eggs that was liberated from ovulation will get into the oviduct. Eggs can be fertilized if it's healthy enough and sperm from a male dog is present.

The 3rd stage is diestrus which range from two to three months. During this stage female dogs will no longer consent to male dogs. The symptoms for this period are pregnancy, mammary glands swell and a few dogs may undergo false pregancy. Progesterone hormones wii still stay elevated throughout this period.

The last is anestrus. This is the resting period bracing oneself for the next estrus cycle which last about five months. Hormone is reduce at this period.

If you're planning on breeding your female dog then you had better speak with your veterinarian to ascertain the heat level, measuring progesterone hormones level and so on. The grounds for doing analysis is to assist timing the mating time period.
