There are many things to consider when it comes to pet supplies for a new puppy or dog. The one option that is an essential is a dog kennel. Dog kennels for sale are available in many different sizes, shapes and different uses.

The Outdoor Dog Kennel

For a lot of us dog lovers it is hard to imagine, but many people who own dogs actually keep their dogs outside. For their purpose there are dog kennels, normally made from chain link fence material, that enclose a large area. Normally these dog kennels have very high fences or are even enclosed over the top with more fencing. For those of us with huskies, we know how important full enclosing an outdoor area is as they are masters at escaping dog kennels! They are too smart for my own good!  A dog kennel run is another option.

These outdoor dog kennels will either be connected to a barn or shed so the dog has relief from the elements or there will be a dog house located within the enclosure. Typically these dog kennels are large enough for more than one dog, but of course you could always build your own dog kennel to suit your own needs. Dog kennels and runs are a necessity for the safety and health of the outdoor dog.

Now another option for those who need to wrangle their fur friend in the yard when guests or over or at a place that is not fenced in, there are options for you as well. There are dog kennels that are normally made of plastic, but also metal, that basically make a four to six foot circle to enclose the puppy or dog. These typically are best for small to medium size dogs unless your large dog is pretty docile, otherwise you will need a large dog kennel.  These dog kennels are very portable so you can take the dog with you wherever you go.

The Indoor Dog Crate

Ok so you are probably like most people and your puppy or dog will be an indoor dog. If a dog will be sharing your home it is important that the dog respects your home and your boundaries, just like you would expect from anyone sharing your space. Of course the first thing you need to know is that you have to teach the dog your boundaries. A great way to begin this is to crate or kennel the dog while you are away from the house.

Dog kennels or dog crates for the home come in a variety of sizes and are rectangular in shape. They should be made of metal and have a door that locks, safely keeping puppy or dog from doing some destruction before they have learned not to. Kenneling or crating your dog also allows for an easier time house training. The reason a dog kennel is a great house breaking tool is because the dog begins to consider the dog kennel it's den and dogs do not soil their dens if they can help it. Please do not expect your puppy not to soil its crate if you leave it for more than 4 hours, it does take time for them their bladders to grow and to be able to hold it for extended periods of time.

Many people who like to consider their dogs humans think it is cruel to lock them up in dog kennels, but their first mistake is considering their dogs human. Dogs are dogs and they will feel comforted knowing they have a place to be safe. Even if you eventually trust them in the house without being locked in the dog kennel, it might be a good idea to leave the dog kennel up and open so they can go there to feel safe if they want to. My dogs routinely go to their dog crates to nap without being told!

Indoor Dog Crates and Appropriate Size

It is so important if you are going to use indoor dog kennels that you buy the appropriate size for each dog. Each dog should have their own and it should fit them correctly. It is important to not get a dog kennel that is too large because you think the dog will be more comfortable. This is a big mistake. Dog kennels that are too large encourage a dog to soil the cage because they can do it in a corner and get away from it so it will hinder the progress of house breaking. The dog kennel should be just big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around.
