Stop Barking!

  1. Start by picking a word that will be your command not to bark, such as "no bark"
  2. Make sure your dog is on a leash. When the dog barks pull down firmly on the leash (towards the ground) and give your command "no bark."
  3. When the dog is quiet give praise - use a gentle voice and a praise command such as "good quiet." Go down to the dog's level and give him/her a small treat.
  4. If the tug on the leash doesn't work use a spray bottle. Give a few squirts of water right in the face of the dog and the firm command "no bark." Use the spray bottle only when the dog doesn't stop barking. Do not use the spray bottle to threaten the animal.
  5. Make sure when giving commands you are always above the dog to confirm your place as the leader and the one in charge.
