Paw grooming is quite essential for your pet dog. The nails of the paws if not properly clipped, it might lead to the incidence of infection in the paws. Broken nails often cause pain and gradually lead to the intrusion of bacteria causing infection. The infected paw then would gradually swell and may disturb your pet’s easy pace of walking and running. The thumb nail is the worst affected one.

A well groomed paw is often the indicator of how healthy is your dog. A brittle nail may signify incidence fungal infection, occurrence of special kind of mange, lack of nutrition or incidence of any form of auto immune disease.

Though quite necessary for your pet dog but it might not like the dog paw grooming experience. Many dogs in fact, do not like its paw to be handled. The following are some tips on dog paw grooming which can be helpful for you.

Tips on Dog Paw Grooming


  • Always try to clip the nails just after your pet has taken a bath. After bath the nails get wet and soft and hence easy to clip them.
  • If you have a long haired dog, you may simply slip over a panty hose and gently try to press the paws so that the nails may come out. This would enable you to clip the nails properly without cutting off the hair.
  • In order to keep the nail pads soft you may use a lubricant in the form of vitamin E oil. Break open a vitamin E capsule to extract the oil.
  • After filing the nails use a very soft cloth to rub them. Apply Vaseline to keep the nails soft.

While filing the nails, make sure of not clipping them too short. Your dog can grow aggressive to paw grooming in case it gets hurt. Try not to cut too deep. In case you have mistakably cut into the quick, apply some medicated clotting powder and try to bandage the wound with some clean cotton swab. Some dog species have dew claws that are usually located towards the inside of the paws. So make sure to trim the nails of the dewclaws in case your dog has one.

To make your dog grow accustomed to the nail grooming session, you may always please your dog with a treat. This would keep it engaged while you gently clip the nails of its paws.
