Dog Training Courses
When looking at Dog Training Courses you have a few options for the
type of training you choose. Reward training is a very popular type of
training that is often taught. In reward training the when the goal
behavior is achieved, then the dog gets the reward. For example, when
a dog heels, then they get praise, or food as a reward. There are many
types of rewards that are offered, such as praise, clicker training and
food.
Clicker training is a form of reward training where if the
dog performs the correct behavior, such as sitting, then the owner
clicks the clicker and then immediately gives him/her a food reward.
Eventually the dog learns to associate the food with the clicker and
starts to respond to the clicker as the reward. Clicker training has
become very popular and can be very effective.
When using food
as a reward you encourage your dogs behavior you desire such as, asking
the dog to heel, and once your dog does that for a little bit you
reward him or her with a treat. In the beginning the interval between
desired behavior and reward is smaller. Then as your dog starts to
understand what you want, by using commands such as heel, sit, stay,
then you lengthen the interval for treats, not offering every time for
desired behavior, but perhaps every few times. You can use some praise
with out a treat once training has been established and after your dog
has an idea of how it works. Random reinforcement with treats is
actually much more effective then constant reinforcement.
Most
Dog Training Courses use a reward type approach. So when you are ready
to get started the Dog Training Course you choose will most likely
follow that method of training. It is important to practice all of the
commands with your dog in various locations, such as at the park, in
town, at the store. This way your dog will learn to pay attention to
you in all of these settings and know that their behavior should be the
same everywhere. This will also make it easier to take your dog with
you, if they are well behaved and know how to heel or stay wherever you
are it is better for everyone. Be prepared to have lots of treats on
hand and spend some dedicated time on the process of training your
dog. It will pay off in the end.
