If your dog is currently having difficulty keeping their four paws on the ground, it may be time for some specific training. This is a very important area to cover, because many people do not like to have a dog jumping on them, especially if it has been running around outdoors. Additionally, it is important to train your puppy in order to protect both children and the elderly. When getting started, many dog training courses will teach you these following tips

First, you can attempt the “treat tactic.” This is accomplished by grabbing one of your puppy’s favorite treats, then firmly holding it by their nose. Let your dog sniff it and get excited before you hold it up in the air. Standing tall with the treat raised above your head, allow your dog to begin jumping, barking, whining, etc. until they use up all their energy. Once they have calmed down enough to keep all four paws on the ground, give them the treat and praise them

As your dog becomes more accustomed to this exercise, then try doing the same thing without your dog ever leaving the ground. Only give them a treat and praise when they learn to keep all four paws on the ground without jumping at all. Additionally, a command such as “stay,” “down,” or “off” used consistently will help your dog know what to do.

Next, whenever your dog tries to jump up, you can also raise your knee gently in order to knock your dog off balance while speaking your command. For small dog training, this can be accomplished by using a firmly outstretched hand, while guiding your dog back down on all fours. Whenever your dog returns to the correct position, be sure to give it praise.

One last dog training tip you can practice involves a leash. This is most successful when two people are involved. Have one person hold the leash while the other walks towards your dog. Whenever the puppy begins jumping, pull back on the leash to gain their attention and bring them back to all fours. Have the person without the leash turn around and walk away or into another room. After about 20-30 seconds repeat this process, only rewarding your dog when they successfully remain on all fours.
