Do you have a problem with dog urine odor in your house? This article could save you a lot of money, and will tell you how to get rid of that odor without replacing your carpet, and without huge expense. In fact, the solution I found costs right around four bucks! What is it? Plain old borax! Please read on for complete instructions and helpful hints.

First things first, if you are bringing a new puppy home and it pees on your carpet, the best way to clean it up is to blot it first with paper toweling. You can even step on that toweling to draw as much moisture out of the carpet as possible. Next, pour rubbing alcohol, straight from the bottle on the pee stain. If you do this, you will never have a pee odor! This also works on old stains.  NEVER use ammonia, or cleaners with ammonia in them. That is just like telling your dog it's okay to pee wherever you spray the ammonia. Urine has ammonia in it, which is why you never want to clean with ammonia products if you have a dog.

Okay now that we have that cleared up, we are going to move on to the next problem, and that is undetected pee! This is the bad stuff folks! This is the kind of pee that soaks deep into the carpet and just lurks there waiting to gross you out with a funky odor. If you have a puppy, or an older dog that has lost control, then you have a potential undetected pee situation. It happened to me, and it could happen to you, but don't despair, because I have found a very good remedy for this problem!

First you need to go to your local hardware store and get a black light. Darken the room, and turn on the black light, and you will see just what your dog has been up to. This is a lot easier than getting down on your hands and knees and sniffing the areas out. Just believe me...okay?

The first time I used the black light I almost fainted! Never did I think my little five pound puppy was peeing that much, all over the place, and even after she was being taken outside on a regular basis! No wonder there was a bad pee odor in my house, and here I thought I was catching every naughty accident!

Once you find the pee areas you are now ready for action, but you need one more thing first, and that it a box of good old borax, the popular brand name being 20 Mule Borax, you can find it at Wal-Mart, or just about any grocery store by the clothes detergents. This stuff is an awesome pee odor eliminator.

Before you use the borax, try using rubbing alcohol, straight from the bottle. This may get rid of the problem, but if it does not, then go to the next step below.

For instant relief you simply sprinkle the area with borax, let is sit for two days and vacuum. This will usually take care of the problem, but not always. If the carpet has been soiled over and over in the same area, then you will have to get your scrub bucket out, better yet a carpet shampooer.

Once again you want to sprinkle borax on the pee areas. Next, dissolve one cup of borax into two quarts of warm water and shampoo the carpet with this solution. Go right over the borax that you have sprinkled on the carpet, and work it all into the carpet fibers, allow to dry and then vacuum.

Of course, some dogs have stronger urine than others. If you still smell an odor after the borax treatment, you can give the borax treatment one more try. If you continue to have a problem, you need professional help. Go online and get professional carpet cleaning products that are guaranteed to remove any odor! However, in most cases, the borax will work!

Also, a lot depends on just how long the problem has been going on. If you have a puppy for two months with a few indoor accidents, you should be able to get rid of that odor. On the other hand, if you have a multiple dog house, all peeing in a certain area for a long time, that might be the kind of thing that is going to lead to carpet removal, and maybe even the removal of the floor below to get rid of the odor! Common sense will dictate as to how to proceed.

In the end, if your pet is peeing in your house, it is up to you to provide the solution. Sometimes that solution is a litter box for dogs, and I might add, that was the way I went and it worked out quite well for me and my puppy. You simply go to Wal Mart and get a nice large, shallow, plastic container. The larger the dog, the bigger the container. Fill it with wood chips, or wood pellets, and you have a litter box for a dog. Go to www.purina.com and follow the links for litter box training your dog. Now we will move on to the last part of this article which includes a few tips on the other mess dogs make. This is the stuff you don't want to step in when you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. If you have a puppy, or want a puppy, this is a very real possibility! If this grosses you out, don't get a dog!

Poop happens! If you have an inside dog, do yourself a favor, and feed it nothing but a high grade, dry dog food. Purina and Iams are two good brands. These brands are more nutritious, so your dog will poop less, and the stools will have less odor and will be very firm and easy to pick up when there is an accident.

The best way to clean up poop accidents is to wait until it hardens and then pick it up with a piece of toilet paper. Next, spray rubbing alcohol on the spot where the poop was. Or you can use Lysol spray. You want to sanitize that area. If you have small children that play on the floor, don't get a puppy. Instead adopt an older dog that is already housetrained, it is a lot easier in the end, and you will be saving a dog's life that would otherwise be put down. Personally, all my dogs were older and trained, except the one that I have now, and that was because this pup needed a home right away. The mother was hit by a car, and left four, 5 week old puppies behind. That puppy is now almost 8 months old, and she still has accidents from time to time. House training a dog is not that easy. Once again, remember that this is just a very natural consequence of owning a puppy.

Last but not least, never ever hit your dog, or rub it's nose in an accident! This is only going to make the problem worse! If your dog does have an accident, point to it, and tell your dog in a low, calm voice that it is naughty! "Naughty, naughty girl! What happened? This is soooo naughty!" You get the idea! If you yell at the dog, it is not going to learn anything. A low, calm, accusing voice is going to make your dog understand you better. To test this technique, next time your dog is barking and you want him/her to stop, simply whisper to the dog to calm down. It works every time with my dog. If you are yelling and hyper, your dog will be hyper too and try to "out bark" you.

If you are planning to get a new puppy, let me tell you that puppies are a lot of work. And, no matter what you do, sooner or later they will have an accident in your house, so don't blame the puppy, you have been warned. I have seen people bring home a new pup, only to give it away a few weeks later because they were not prepared to clean up the pee/poop messes.

Dogs are awesome and amazing creatures! I live on a farm and we have four barn dogs, and one house dog. I love each of them in a very special way, and they truly are a part of the family. Nothing is better than when all five dogs and a few cats too, gather around the TV with the family for an evening together. We just have to be careful not to put on the Animal Channel, because they start to howl if they hear other dogs on the television! Yes, it is funny, but not all that relaxing if it happens often.
