Pet Food Danger Gauge 80% - Dangerous and Toxic To Pets
The Dog Whisperer should have stayed with dog training. This dog food is awful!
Flax Seed - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - used to make fabric, dye, paper, medicines, fishing nets and soap. Excessive consumption of flax seeds can cause diarrhea.
Iron in a dog's diet can be toxic.
Animal Fats - Used to encourage a pet to eat ingredients they normally would not eat. Ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal upset or even pancreatitis. This can be a very painful condition for dogs. In addition, most companion animals do not need extra fat in their diets.
Apple stems, leaves, and seeds are toxic to pets. Do they use the whole apple?
Chondroitin Sulfate - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Sugars - can have over 100 individual sugars. Used to encourage pets to eat ingredients they normally would not eat. Sugar - William D. Cusick/The Animal Advocate - all forms of sugar carbohydrates have been found to be detrimental, except for lactose found in the milk of a lactating bitch for her puppy.
Brewer's rice and brewer's dried yeast are by-products of beer production. There you go, your little pet gets what is left over after a beer run, the stuff not fit for human consumption. Alcohols can cause the same damage to an animal's liver and brain as they cause in humans. But the effects can be deadly on animals since they are much smaller than us. The smaller the animal, the more deadly the effects can be. Even a small amount of alcohol may cause vomiting and damage the liver and brain. Brewer's Rice - From AAFCO - the dried extracted residue of rice resulting from the manufacture of wort (liquid portion of malted grain) or beer and may contain pulverized dried spent hops in an amount not to exceed 3 percent.
Fermentation Products - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Sugars are the common substrate of fermentation, and typical examples of fermentation products are ethanol, lactic acid, and hydrogen. However, more exotic compounds can be produced by fermentation, such as butyric acid and acetone. Yeast carries out fermentation in the production of ethanol in beers, wines and other alcoholic drinks, along with the production of large quantities of carbon dioxide. Grain fermentation solubles are an inexpensive by-product of human food and beverage production which add little or no nutritional value to pet foods. Alcohols can cause the same damage to an animal's liver and brain as they cause in humans. But the effects can be deadly on animals since they are much smaller than us. The smaller the animal, the more deadly the effects can be. Even a small amount of alcohol may cause vomiting and damage the liver and brain.
Potassium Chloride - used as the third of a three drug combination in judicial execution through lethal injection and used for making fertilizer.
Natural Flavor. I always like the way pet food companies hide the use of manure in the ingredients. Natural flavor is made from the manure of the animal the pet food company wants the pet food to taste like. If natural flavor were an actual part of the ingredients then natural flavor would not have to be listed as a separate ingredient. From FDA reports.
Barley - not necessary in a dog's diet. Probably a by-product of beer production.
Salt - If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances, severe electrolyte imbalances can lead to muscle spasm or even congestive heart failure.
Choline chloride is mass produced and is an important additive in feed especially for chicken where it accelerates growth. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Sodium selenite is mainly used in the manufacture of colorless glass - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Natural Flavors as defined by the FDA With respect to flavors, pet foods often contain "digests," which are materials treated with heat, enzymes and/or acids to form concentrated natural flavors. Only a small amount of a "chicken digest" is needed to produce a "Chicken Flavored Cat Food," even though no actual chicken is added to the food. Stocks or broths are also occasionally added. Whey is often used to add a milk flavor. Often labels will bear a claim of "no artificial flavors." Actually, artificial flavors are rarely used in pet foods. The major exception to that would be artificial smoke or bacon flavors, which are added to some treats. http://www.fda.gov/cvm/petlabel.htm
Animal digest. AAFCO doesn't care that manure is included in the pet food as long as the temperature at the time of cooking is brought to a certain degree.
Now there are those people out there who simply refuse to believe a pet food company would use manure in their pet's foods. Let me ask you to think on this issue for just a minute and then see what you decide. Let's take a person, for instance, When a person begins the "digestion" process food is placed in the mouth for chewing. Digestion continues as the food passes to the stomach and is broken down to pass into the intestines for further digestion. Digestion is complete once the person has had a bowel movement and fully evacuated the food from the human body. Why would obtaining animal digest be any different from human digest?

Fairy,
Give this a try http://hubpages.com/hub/Pet-Food-Danger-Gauge-How-
This is a pretty good list of the foods I have rated with the Pet Food Danger Gauge.
I am currently developing a new site called Pet Food Danger Gauge.com This site is not launch as of yet but will be shortly. You will be able to find a lot of great information at this site which is all post-recall information.
Susan
I think you all should feed your own brain some knowledge (REAL EDUCATION) about nutrition before you go get all excited---the so-called "information" listed above contains so many errors it's pathetic!!
Im talking with my lawyer and a animal nutrition specialist... we are currently seeing if Mrs Peters can be liable for the dangerous comments and reviews she makes
Unfortunatly, much of the information posted is incorrect. First of all, siting "wikipedia" as a source is completely inappropriate. You could never turn in a college paper with wikipedia as a souce. For example, animal digest is not animal manure. It is animal meat and/or organs that have been soaked in enzymes to partially digest the meat pre-consumption. It is actually commonly recommended for animals with sensitive stomachs and digestive issues. And as a matter of fact, AAFCO does have problem with manure in food. Even by product meals have to be free of ingested food and excrement. Salts and many of the cholrides are also vital for cell function. Yes, in excess they are bad. But not enough is bad too. That is why foods must meet AAFCO standards. You also fail to mention the real cuprit ingredients in dog food, like corn products, by products and preservatives. Please take a few college animal nutrition courses at least before you post these things as fact.

I feed raw but am always looking for dry foods to recommend to people who are feeding &*@! brands to their pets. I have never settled on anything that I love so your advice would be very appreciated. What DO you recommend?
Personally, I believe in high protein diets as they are carnivores. I know not everyone agrees. I also find my dogs don't agree with grains -even organic ones - so I have been recommending Wellness CORE and Innova EVO. Not a lot of variety in the state I live in but those two are available. I used to recommend Solid Gold Barking at the Moon but I've heard it isn't the best choice.
FYI: There are many links on the pages with your heading and a lot of them go to the nasty brands with unacceptable ingredients.
?? Would love your input. Thanks!
