How to treat minor cases at home
Having worked at a veterinary hospital for some time, I have learned about some home remedies for a dog's upset stomach. We offered these tips as an option to clients when we had no same day appointments.
If followed carefully, these natural home remedies may help sooth an upset stomach or even heal it in the best cases. However, while most cases may benefit from a home remedy, there are some instances, where home remedies are not sufficient and where medical treatment is the only choice.
Home remedies for an upset stomach may help those dogs that have an indigestion due to an abrupt diet change or if they got into the garbage can or overate.
1) PICK UP ALL FOOD
The general protocol for dogs vomiting or with diarrhea is to fast these dogs for a minimum of 12 to 24 hours. Puppies should not be fasted for more than 12 hours, usually the whole night will suffix.
The fast will consist of no food or treats. Water may further upset a vomiting dog, so ice chips may be a good alternative until the dog feels better.
2) BLAND DIET
After the 12-24 hour fast offer a bland diet composed of boiled rice and chicken or boiled rice and hamburger. If you chose chicken make sure the skin is taken off. If you choose hamburger make sure the fat is drained off. Make sure the rice is the bulky part of the meal.Offer this in 3-4 small meals throughout the day.
3)GOOD OLD BACTERIA
Add a dollop of plain yogurt or cottage cheese to allow some good bacteria to help out the inflamed intestines.
4) CHECK HYDRATION LEVEL
You need to make sure your dog is not becoming dehydrated. Lift gently the skin on the back or between shoulder blades in a tent. If it snap back into position good. If it delays or worse, stays lifted then the dog may need subcutaneous fluids from the vet.
5) REPLACE ELECTROLYTES
If the dog is having frequent liquid squirts of diarrhea the odds of becoming dehydrated are great. You may help by giving some unflavored Pedialyte or mix in some Gatorade into his water bowl. If the dog is vomiting persistently offering water may further cause vomiting making the situation worse. You can try to freeze some Gatorade and offer it to lick. However, in severe cases the only way to keep dog hydrated is through fluids provided by the vet.
6)MONITOR
At this point all you can do is monitor your pet. Do not hesitate to have your dog seen if he becomes lethargic, laying around and not acting its normal self. Ensure that following the bland diet your dog has no more vomiting episodes and that the stools are better formed. At this point gradually add the regular diet and taper off the rice meal. If the vomiting or diarrhea still is present then the dog needs medical attention. The underlying cause needs addressed. The dog may have a parasite infestation, or if vomiting consistently the dog may have swallowed a foreign object that is causing a blockage or the vomiting and diarrhea may be caused by a virus such as parvo.
The natural home remedy of a bland diet may be therefore helpful in many cases, however there are those cases that need immediate vet attention. Usually, your dog's behavior will give you hints on what to do. Chances, are if your dog is not acting right the vet may need seen the same day.

I am happy you found it useful!
Thank you so much. You confirmed everything the vet said. Made me feel better knowing what was going on. Thank you.
This article really helped a lot with my 'upset' boxer. Thank you =]
great site found this useful as my toy poodle has a upset tummy
glad to hear that! best wishes!
very helpful! thanks for posting this.
Thanks for all the wonderful information. My Border Collie was a happy boy after his TLC and treatment.
Happy your boy is doing better, best wishes!
Thank you so much for sharing this information. I can hear my dogs stomach gurgling (the poor thing). I just want him to feel better.
Thank you! I will try this with my doggie who has an upset tummy. :-( Hope it helps her. Thanks again!
Hope it works, best wishes!
Thank you so much for the tip. My dog has been to the Vet she is on Metronidazole and Pepcid. Her diarrhea has stopped and her stools are better formed but when fed bland food and water she feels like vommitting after an hour or so she will calm down. There are lots of gas in her tummy. The Vet haven't given anything for it do you any idea as to what to do.
Thanks
The stools forming well are a good sign, but perhaps her stomach is yet not ready to accept food. It could be she gulps it down too fast or it just too much for her now. As you can read from my article above, water can also further upset an already irritated stomach.
Did she fast already? It may help to give her tummy a bit of rest and instead of offering water, some ice cubes she will lick may help her stay hydrated while not irritating her stomach as water. Keep an eye on her hydration levels at all times as described above.
Perhaps you can try an alternative to the boiled rice and chicken. A little bit of meat based baby food (with no onion or garlic in it) given every now and then, may be more subtle on her stomach. The key is giving it very sloowly so she will not gulp it down or eat too much at once.
Did they do an x-ray to rule out an obstruction? Did they come to a diagnosis? Please consult with your vet if she does not seem to be getting better as this may be sign there is something more going on. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Thanks for replying back so quickly. Yes, I forgot to mention the vet did a blood test and X-ray. The test was ok
They cause of the abdominal pain is still not known except that she was dehydrated and put her on IV for the nite in the hospital. They gave her Metoclopramide CRI, Metronidazole 250mg PO BID and Buprenex for the nite it seemed to settle her and gave her some food in the morning.
She looked fine and we took her home yesterday and we were asked to continue giving her the antibiotic and pepcid. It was only after I gave her the tablets and drinks that she started to have this vomitting spasm. It is more like she was burbing to release gas there is nothing coming out only gas.
Do you think I should start fasting her and just giving her only water for now. I am suppose to give her the tablets twice daily - every 12 hours.
I have given her the ice cube she enjoys licking it and
have given her little bit of boiled rice with a bit of yogurt will see if this settle her tummy.
Thanks
I would really ask your vet about this. It could be the medications are causing her problems. I thought she had nausea and vomiting but now that I read this last comment it looks like she is just retching and gagging without producing anything. In particular if your dog is a deep chested large breed this can be a sign of bloat which is a medical emergency. You can read more about this here:http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1571&a
Do not want to concern you, but a call to the vet would be the best since he/she has been treating her and knows best. Hope all clears up soon..
Thanks for the tips and reminders. My dog started out going to a holistic vet which I'm thankful for. She had a "holistic" vet which was great for her. He never gave her any shots that weren't required by law. When he did give her shots he'd give her a liquid herbal mixture to help her system deal with the shot. I think all vets should be holistic vets but I'm prejudiced.
Thanks! I hope this will help are beagle mix. She always has stomach problems
