What Human Food Can I NOT Feed My Dog?

DO NOT feed human food to dog until you know what is toxic. Some people food is safe for dogs to eat, some quite dangerous. Before you offer hand outs to your pet or someone else's beloved, take this advice. Whether it's snibbles, scraps stirred into commercial dog food, or the popular homemade food for pets, know what is potentially poisonous for the dog to eat. Enclosed is a listing of illness/harmful reactions.

Moldy Foods. From your frig or trash cans. Aside from obvious fungi that is toxic, variety of bacteria you cannot see. 

Human Vitamins. Iron-included, especially. Kidney/Liver damage. Damage to the lining of the digestive system.

Alcohol/Beer/Wine/Hops. Coma or death.  

Sugar-Free Foods. Xylitol has been found to cause liver failure in some dogs.

Raw Eggs/Raw Fish. Salmonella poisoning not worth the risk.

Broccoli. Toxic in large quantities. Avocado. Toxic, even the tree.

Green Tomatoes/Green Potatoes/Potato Peelings/Rhubarb Leaves. The Oxalates can effect the nervous & digestive & urinary systems.

Yeast Dough. May produce gas, leading to a swelling stomach to a possible rupture of the digestive system.

Tea/Coffee/Coffee Grounds. Caffeine is dangerous.

Chocolate. The compound found is Theobromine. It is a diuretic and cardiac stimulant fatal to dogs. Caffeine danger.

Salt/Baking Soda/Baking Powder. Electrolyte imbalance from large amounts leading to muscle spasm or congestive heart failure.

Nutmeg. Can cause seizures, tremors, and central nervous system damage.

Mushrooms. Kidney disease or liver failure from potential toxins.

Onions & Garlic. The Thiosulphate in onions dangerous. Garlic, raw or cooked, has some controversy. Seek professional advice on your breed as to whether it is safe or not. Poison Control says overdose of garlic is dangerous. Others say their dog became ill from just some of it. Still others swear by garlic for clean up of worms, virus, fleas. Maybe contact local breed club for more info pertaining to you. Mixed breed? When in doubt, don't serve it until you know what your mix is.

Grapes & Raisins. Unknown substance effects the kidneys.

Macadamia Nuts. Toxic unknown substance.

Excessive Fatty Foods/High Fat Dairy. Pancreatitis risk. Small amounts of cheese/yogurt ok for those who are not Lactose Intolerant - which leads to gas/diarrhea.

Bones/Chicken Bones. Choking hazard. Splinter can lodge in pet's throat. Lacerate digestive system.

Please post more information if an ingredient has been overlooked. It would be also helpful to include allergic experiences your pet has had, tips on what foods to avoid if your dog is allergy prone.
