ORIGIN

The American Water Spaniel originated in the United Stated in the 1800's. It is not known exactly how this breed came to be developed. Some speculate that the breed was developed by the crossing of a Curly Coated Retriever, Irish Water spaniel, and a few other spaniel breeds as well.

DESCRIPTION

Amercian Water Spaniel's are a medium size breed of dog. They have a tightly curled or wavy coat with a protective undercoat, that enables them to resist cold water and weather. The coat can be liver, chocolate, or brown.

TEMPERAMENT

As well as being an outstanding bird dog, this breed also makes an ideal family pet. Their intelligence and eagerness to please makes them easy to train without harsh techniques.

Socializing with people and other dogs is recommended at an early age to avoid timid or agressive behavior later on. They usually will get along with other pets.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

American Water Spaniels are easily adapted to apartment life. However, being a breed that needs alot of exercise, they still will need a regular exercise routine.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

A healthy breed, with no huge health issues. From time to time some of these health problems occur:

  • epilepsy
  • cataracts
  • hip dysplasia
  • cataracts

GROOMING

Regular brushing at least twice a week is a must. The American Water Spaniel has a very oily coat, which can have an odour to it. In any case bathe only when necessary to prevent the loss of these oils.
