ORIGIN

The Anatolian Shepherd originated in Anatolia Turkey. The breed was developed to guard flocks of sheep from predators like wolves and bears.

DESCRIPTION

The Anatolian Shepherd is a large muscular breed with a broad head and sturdy body. He is a slender dog making him capable of great speed and stamina. Usually the double coat is fawn with black on the face, but they can be any color. The coat may also be various lengths.

TEMPERAMENT

Very loyal and protective of their family. They are intelligent and learn very fast, but have a tendancy not to listen. They require a firm hand and early training. Probably not the best breed for a beginner. There are very suspicious of strangers. They must be introduced to new people, and given time to warm up to them. Socializing them with people at an early age is highly recommended, as well as socializing with children and other animals.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Not recommended for apartment living. This breed would do best with a home with large yard.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Health problems sometimes seen in the Anatolian Shepherd:

  • hip dysplasia
  • entropion
  • sensitivity to anesthesia
  • their immune system is slower to develop than most other breeds.

GROOMING

Needs little grooming. A regular brushing is sufficient. Twice a year they will shed heavily, and you may need to brush more often during this time.
