ORIGIN

The Australian Cattle Dog originated in Australia in the 19 century. The breed was developed by the crossing of breeds such as the Dingo, smooth coated Collie, Australian Kelpie, Dalmation, and Bull Terrier.

DESCRIPTION

The Australian Cattle Dog is a sturdy, athletic, muscular breed. They have a short outercoat as well as a short undercoat. Their coat colors are usually two basic colors, red or blue, and can include a variety of different patterns or speckles. Puppies are born white, but develop their colours and markings as they get older.

TEMPERAMENT

This breed is said to be more of a "one person" dog. They are very loyal and loving. They have a very high energy level and are quite intelligent, so they will need a job to do or things to keep them busy. They are good with children if they have been with them since they were puppies. Sometimes agressive with other animals. The are naturally wary of strangers making them good watchdogs. The may even have the tendancy to nip at the heels of animals and people. They are easy to train, provided you start early.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

This is a working breed that needs a job to do, making it not really suitable for apartment life. They would do best with at least a large yard.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Health problems for this breed may include:

  • hip dyspalsia
  • deafness
  • progressive retinal atrophy

GROOMING

Australian Cattle Dogs do not require much in the way of grooming. Regular brushing with a firm bristle brush should be sufficient. They may shed their coats once or twice a year. Bathe only when necessary.
