ORIGIN

Originally from Germany, the Bavarian Mountain Hound with its well developed ability as a scent hound, was used to track game.

DESCRIPTION

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a medium sized breed, slightly longer than it is tall. They have a short thick coat that lays tight to the body. The Color is usually shade of black masked fawn, or brindle.

TEMPERAMENT

This breed is very loyal and develops very close bonds with family members. He requires patient and firm handling. Not an ideal breed for a newcomer to dogs and training. Keep in mind they were bred for independance and working. They are fast, and have great agility and stamina, making them a breed who will do best with a job to do or lots of exercise.

They should be socialized with children and people at an early age.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Not really suited for apartment life. A large yard at least is recommended for this energetic breed.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Bavarian Mountain Hounds are prone to very little hereditary health problems.

GROOMING

The Bavarian Mountain Hound does not requires a lot of grooming. Regular brushing is all that is required. A hound glove is often used for this purpose. Bathe only when necessary.
