ORIGIN

Beaucerons originated in France and have been used for herding and guarding sheep, as well as search and rescue, and messengers during both world wars.

DESCRIPTION

A square standing muscular dog, with a harsh outercoat covering a soft wooly like undercoat. Colors can include black and tan, black or harlequin. The coat is short and close to the skin except for the legs, tail, and flank which will have a slight fringe. Beaucerons also will have double dewclaws which should not be removed if you plan to show your dog in competitions.

TEMPERAMENT

This is a breed very intelligent and easy to train, often quick to pick up what their owner is expecting of them. They are very protective and good with family members and small children. Socialize them with children and other animals at an early age. They are slower to mature than some other breeds.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Can do quite fine in apartments, provided they get lots of exercise. A good run is required, not just walks on a leash.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

In general Beaucerons are a very healthy breed. Some Beaucerons have been known to be prone to:

  • bloat
  • hip dysplasia

GROOMING

Average shedders. A good brushing on a regular basis is recommended and more often when shedding is worse.
