ORIGIN

The Belgian Shepherd Groenendael originated in Belgium during the nineteenth century. The Groenendael is one of four varieties of Belgian Shepherds, each named for the area of belgium from where they came from. While they were commonly used as herding dogs, they were also used during the war as message carriers and ambulance dogs.

DESCRIPTION

This is a medium size breed, very strong and well balanced. The Goenendael is always black, but markings of white are sometimes seen on the chest. It has a long double coat, with a dense texture.

TEMPERAMENT

This breed is very affectionate, loyal, and very active. Establishing dominace early in training will make your life with your Groenendael a whole lot easier. They need a dominant owner who has a lot of time and energy. They are good with kids, but should be introuduced to them at an early age. This is a breed that forms a deep bond with its owners, and will not do well left in a kennel or away from people for long periods of time. They do not respond well to harsh treatment during training. Repetitive fairness with firmness will be sufficient in showing them who is boss.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Give the Groenendael something to do and he will be happy. So having the space for him to exercise at least a couple hours a day would be best.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Some Breeds are prone to certain genetic diseases. This does not mean however that every Groenendael will have one or any of these problems. Medical history is something you can and should discuss with the breeders.

  • hip dysplasia
  • elbow dysplasia
  • epilepsy
  • progressive retinal atrophy

GROOMING

A good brushing once a week is usally sufficient, however once or twice a year you will notice your groenendael shedding massive amounts of hair, at this time you may have to brush every day until they are finished shedding.
