ORIGIN

Although the exact origin of the Bichon Frise is not well documented, it is believed by many that they originated in the Mediterranean area. Often they travelled with spanish sailors and were bartered, leaving them in many different continents.

DESCRIPTION

Bichons are a small breed of dog. They have a loose curled outercoat, covering a fine silky under coat. Their colors can include white, sometimes with cream, apricot or buff shadings, usually around the ears. The tail curls up over their back.

TEMPERAMENT

A cheerful, inquisitive, good natured little dog, that gets along pretty well with people, and animals. They are happiest when they are showered with lots of attention, and will not like being left alone for long periods of time. Although most are quite good, there are some who tend to be a bit nippy when playing, so monitor their behavior closely when around very small children. They can do well in obedience training, but some tend to be difficult to housebreak.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

While indoors, the Bichon Frise will still keep quite active, so a house without a yard is still ok. Exercising on a regular basis will be sufficient.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Some health problems the Bichon Frise may be prone to:

  • bladder infections
  • subluxating kneecaps
  • allergies
  • ear infections

GROOMING

The Bichon sheds little or no hair. They are a good breed of choice for allergy sufferers. Brushing on a daily basis is a good idea. Special care must be made to keep eyes clean, as tearing can be a problem with this breed, causing stains on the hair around their eyes.
