The Dachshund originated in Germany, and when translated means "Badger Dog". The breed was developed to hunt and flush out small burrowing animals. The smaller Dachshund variety was use to hunt rabbits.

The Dachshund is a short-legged breed with a very long body. As well as two different sizes, there is also three different varieties that are seen. There is wire-haired, short-haired, and long-haired varieties. Many colors and combinations can be seen in the Dachshund like tans, yellow, black, browns, harlequin, speckle-streaked, and piebald.

Dachshunds are very loyal and get quite attached to their owners. This is not a breed that will take kindly to being left along for long periods of time. All varieties are said to be difficult to train due to their stubborness. They get along best with older children, and in general will do ok with other pets. Some tend to bark alot, and when bored may become destructive.

Well suited for apartment life and can get along fine without a yard. They enjoy a regular exercise routine, but their exercise needs are not as high as other breeds.

Dachshunds can be prone to the following health problems:

• spinal problems
• heart disease
• diabetes
• excessive weight gain

Dachshunds are average shedders. Grooming needs will depend on the variety you have. The wire-haired variety will need to be trimmed a couple times a year. The smooth-haired variety needs only a good rubdown with a damp cloth, and with the long-haired variety you will need to brush daily.
