ORIGIN

The Havanese belongs to the Bichon family. It's origin is in Cuba. It was developed by a now extinct breed known as the Bichon Tenerife.

DESCRIPTION

The Havanese is a small breed, slightly longer than they are tall. They have a double coat with long soft hair on both coats. The coat can be wavy or a bit curly. The coat of an adult Havanese will reach around 6 to 8 inches in length. The Havanese has a variety of different colours. from white, black, blue, fawn, etc. They may be solid or tri-coloured or parti.

Note: This breed is a good choice for all you doglovers who suffer from allergies.

TEMPERAMENT

The Havanese is a great choice for family dogs or companion dogs. They are highly intelligent and good with children. Very easy to train, and they get along with other animals as well. They may bark at the presence of stangers, but by nature barking is not a big problem with this breed.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Like most other breeds, the Havanese will like to get some exercise, but this breed will do fine in an apartment or house without a yard.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

In general, the Havanese is a quite healthy long-lived breed. This breed has had reported problems with:

  • cataracts
  • dry skin
  • poodle eye
  • luxating patella

GROOMING

A thorough brushing and combing at least twice a week is needed for this breed. Take special care with their ears as they can be prone to ear infections.
