ORIGIN
This breed was used to guard boats on the Rhine River in Europe. They were named after Cornelis (Kees) de Gyselaer, who was leader of the Dutch Rebellion against the House of Orange.
DESCRIPTION
Keeshonds have the typical Spitz appearance. Their tail is tightly curled up over their back, and they have small pointed ears, and a noticeably thick ruff around the neck area. The double coat consists of an undercoat that is cream or a pale grey in color. Over this is the thick outercoat that comes in various shades of gray with black tips.
TEMPERAMENT
Keeshonds are great family pets and are known to get along very well with children. They also get along well with other pets. This breed loves to bark, and will warn you of someone approaching, but they are not likely to be aggressive with strangers. It is common to see a Keeshond spin in circles when they get excited. They tend to be very clingy to their owners, and most do not adjust well to being away from family or left in a kennel. Training and socialization must begin early, and the techniques should never be harsh because some of these dogs can be very timid. They tend to get bored with repetitive training, as are most breeds with a high level of intelligence.
IDEAL ENVIRONMENT
Could do well in an apartment if you have the time to provide the moderate amount of exercise that they require. Because of their thick coat, they are not a breed that likes excessively warm climates.
HEALTH PROBLEMS
The Keeshond may be prone to the following health problems:
- hip dysplasia
- luxating patella
- Cushing's Disease
- hypothyroidism
- bloat
GROOMING
Regular brushing with a stiff bristle brush is recommended. Twice a year you will notice they shed quite heavily. Bath only when it is necessary.
