ORIGIN

Like it's name, the Norwegian Elkhound originated in Norway, over 6,000 years ago. Skeletal remains have been found that date as far back as 4000 BC. It is thought to be one of the most ancient breeds. Because of its outstanding tracking abilities, it was often used to track both large and small game.

DESCRIPTION

The Norwegian Elkhound is a medium size breed, with a double coat of black, grey, and white. The outer coat helps repel rain and snow, while the undercoat is a protective layer from cold temperatures.

TEMPERAMENT

Norwegian Elkhounds make a good family pet, but may be wary of strangers. This breed was developed to track game and hold them at bay by barking, so barking may be a problem you might experience. They have a high intelligence and seem to have a independant streak, which may make them a bit of a challenge to train. Start training early with a fair but firm attitude. Socialize them early if you have other pets.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Suitable for apartments provided they get enough exercise. They like cooler climates.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Some known health problems associated with this breed:

  • hip dysplasia
  • PRA
  • Fanconi syndrome
  • pyotraumatic dermatitis (hot spots)

GROOMING

This breed is a heavy shedder. Regular brushing is a must, and more often when they are shedding their dense undercoats. Rubber brushes are useful in removing the dead hair. Only bathe when necessary to prevent removing natural oils in the skin.

This is a clean breed of dog, and this breed like a few others, does not have that typical "doggy smell".
