ORIGIN

The Tibetan Terrier orginated in the land of Tibet in the Lost Valley. These dogs were regarded as being "lucky dogs". They were originally bred by monks, and these dogs were sometimes given as a gift. One of the people to receive such a gift was a doctor by the name of A.R.H. Grieg, who received one dog from a patient, and another dog was given to her by the Dalai Lama. When she returned to England, she established a kennel for this breed.

DESCRIPTION

The Tibetan Terrier is a medium sized breed, square in proportion. The tail curls up over their back, and is feathered. They have a double coat consisting of an undercoat covered by a long slightly wavy outercoat that feels much like human hair to the touch. They have a large amount of hair covering the face and eyes. Tibetan Terriers can be any dog color or combinations of, all being acceptable by breed standards except for chocolate or liver.

TEMPERAMENT

Tibetan Terriers are intelligent, loving, and energetic dogs. They are very loyal to their owners and are a bit reserved with strangers. They do best with older children who are often more considerate than a young child would be. They make good watchdogs and have a bark that some say resembles that of a rising siren. They can have a jealousy issue when around other dogs. The Tibetan Terrier is also very intelligent but at the same time, a bit independant and stubborn, making training possibly difficult for those who lack patience.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

This breed can do well in an apartment, but is important to remember that they still require a fair amount of exercise on a regular basis

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Tibetan Terriers can be prone to the following health problems:

  • hip dysplasia
  • luxating patella
  • progressive retinal atrophy
  • cataracts

GROOMING

Brushing is a must and should be done at least every couple days. The coat can be misted with water to ease brushing. If your dog is not for show, they can be clipped short for easier maintenance. They shed very little hair, and could be a good choice for allergy sufferers who can keep up with the dogs grooming requirements.
