ORIGIN

The Vizsla originated in Hungary, and it's name in Hungarian means "pointer". It is said to have been descended from the Transylavanian Hound, and the Turkish Yellow Dog which is now extinct. As time went on, breeds like the German Short-Haired pointer, and the Pointer have been added to further develop the breed.

DESCRIPTION

The Vizsla is a medium sized breed of dog, sleek and muscular in appearance, similar to that of the Weimaraner. Their tail is often docked and the coat is short and thick. Their coat color is described as a golden-rust color, and can vary somewhat in shading. This breed does not have an undercoat. There is a wirehaired variety of the Vizsla. It is considered a separate breed. It was developed by crossing the Vizsla and the German Wirehaired Pointer, and has a much heavier coat.

TEMPERAMENT

Affectionate and loyal, this breed has the potential to be a great companion and family member. They have great intelligence and a desire to please, but can get easily distracted. Training requires a patient and firm trainer, and training and socializing should begin early. The Vizsla is very energetic and should be kept busy to prevent destructive behavior due to boredom. They are very good with children and other dogs.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

The Vizsla requires a great deal of exercise and would not be well suited to apartment life.
