ORIGIN

The Whippet originated in England, and was developed for the purpose of hunting by the use of the keen sight ability, as well as their speed and agility skills.

DESCRIPTION

Whippets are slender medium size dogs, with a deep chest and a long body. They somewhat resemble a Greyhound, only smaller in size. They have a fine dense coat that can be any number of colors or markings from black, white, brindle, red, fawn, cream, or blue.

TEMPERAMENT

Whippets in general are very friendly and affectionate animals, very loyal to their owner. They get along very well with children and other pets that they have been raised with. They may however chase cats who have unknowingly wandered into the whippets territory. The whippet is not well known as a watchdog. They are extremely friendy with family as well as strangers, and do not have a tendancy to bark. Alot of Whippets will get excited and jump all over you like they have not seen you in a very long time. Because of their excellent disposition they are often used to visit elderly people.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

This breed can do fine in an apartment provided they get regular exercise. The opportunity to run freely when you can provide it would be ideal for them also. The Whippet is very sensitive to the cold and would not be able to stay outside for extended periods of time during the winter,

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Whippets can be prone to the following health problems:

  • sensitivity to anesthetics (common in sighthounds)
  • cardiac problems

GROOMING

Whippets are average shedders. They do not have the typical doggy odor that alot of other breeds have. The short fine coat is easy to groom and would benefit from a regular brushing with a firm bristle brush. You can also give them a good rubdown to keep the coat shiny. Bathing is only required when necessary.
