ORIGIN

The Wire Fox Terrier originated in England. It is believed the breed was descended from the rough-coated black-and-tan working terrier of Wales, Derbyshire, and Durham. Although once considered same breed as the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Wire Fox Terrier is now considered a separate breed due to beliefs that the origins of the two were quite different.

DESCRIPTION

The Wire Fox Terrier is a muscular dog, with a long flat tapered skull. Their ears are v-shaped and fold forward. The have a wiry white coat that can have black or brown markings. Their tail stands up straight and is sometimes docked to 1/4 of its natural length.

TEMPERAMENT

Loyal and affectionate for the most part, however some of these dogs are known to bite when playing with children. They make good watchdogs and love to bark which may cause unwanted problems with the neighbors if not controlled. They are quick to learn and are full of energy, but have a boldness about them that may make obedience training a challenge. Start socialization and training very early to prohibit some of these bad habits. Wire Fox Terriers are somewhat aggressive animals and may try to challenge other dogs as well.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Can do ok in an apartment if you are prepared to meet their needs for alot of exercise. A place to run freely in a large enclosed area would be ideal for this breed.

The Wire Fox Terrier sheds little to no hair and could be a good choice for allergy sufferers. Regular brushing with firm bristle brush is recommended for this breed, however to keep the coat in tip top shape, you can also get them stripped several times a year. Bathe only when necessary.
