Signs of Pet Food Poison

Is your dog SICK from the Pet Food Recall?

Comment from Susan Peters:

When a person or pet is ill the first thing to happen is a loss of appetite. The body shuts down the digestive system to use it's energy to fight what is attacking the body. If you are sick and throwing up you would probably be very upset if someone tried to force-feed you. Your pets are the same way. The pets know best if they are needing food or not. Unless your pet is severly under weight Do Not Force Feed these pets. Should you need to be force-feeding something be sure it is an electrolite type solution, not food! - Susan Peters

My dog, Freedom, got deathly ill after eating Ol' Roy dog food in a pouch for several days. We have been fighting for almost a month to keep her alive. She was diagnosed with renal insufficiency, was hospitalized for many days and even lost part of her tongue, due to the kidney problems. I almost lost her and have receipts to show when we purchased the Ol Roy at Wal-mart. Please let everyone you know with a pet about this recall. This is very serious!

My sweet little doxi had kidney failure, 4 days ago and we had to lay her to rest and now i wonder if the brand that i was feeding her actually killed her . She was very young and healthy, it happened very fast. I have two other dogs that i was feeding the same thing to, and now even though i stoped feeding them this brand of food i am still worried because i have been feeding them this brand from and even before december 06 and march 07. I can only pray that they will be alright.

I had to put my yellow lab to sleep on 3/12 after she suddenly suffered from complete kidney failure. Vomiting, dry gums and lack of appetite triggered us the take her to the vet. We initially thought because of her age but the vet thought otherwise. We were feeding her the BENEFUL dry dog food.

My Pug Max, passed away on Valentines day -

He was 8 1/2 - I knew he was a little off, But would never have put 2 and 2 together.

I had been feeding him Nutro MAX Sr. Lamb and

Rice.

Is there going to be a Class Action Suit?

2 weeks ago, I had my dog at the Vet's on two different days for a battery of testing. He woke up one day and didn't know us, was walking sideways, couldn't bark and was chasing bugs that weren't there! Ihad been feeding him Iams dry and chunks in gravy wet food. I noticed that one of the cans looked funky..the chunks were sitting in an oily clear gravy instead of the usual brown gravy. I fed him a little with his dry food. After opening another can with the same look, I decided to throw it out. It crossed my mind while having my dog tested that maybe this was his problem. Well, two days of testing and observing and $300.00 later the results were inconclusive and remain a mystery to both my Veterinarian and myself. She said that maybe it was a virus or that possibly he got into something "toxic" and to keep an eye on him. I'm thinking now that it may have been the food. My dog, Sam, is 4 years old still recovering but very lucky to be here. My thoughts are with those whose pets were not so lucky.

I hear that the recall was due to Wheat Gluten in the food. Mighty Dog in the can also has it. My dog Heidi has not eaten the Pouch food since very late last year. She also eats the Meaty Dog and Naturally Complete which contains "Corn Gluten". Do you suggest that we keep away from these two ingredients and if so could you please publish a list of suggestions?

My parents just took in my childhood dog Coco to the vet and they admitted her on the accoiunt that her kidney's are failing. She has been eating Ol Roy for awhile now, and we know it was the food that caused it. Our vet has made numerous calls to the company on our behalf and they fail to return phone calls or tell us if they are going to pay for her vet bills. Does anyone know if their is going to be a class action suit? They are acting like they aren't going to do anything, and if not, we want to fight for our beloved pet! Someone please let me know if there will be a lawsuit. Coco is still in the doggy hospital and they don't know yet if she will be able to make it through this. Thanks to everyone!

Our best friend Beau passed away in Sept. with the same symptoms which you have all described. He ate Nutro Lamb & Rice for a long time. He got sick in a weeks time. We had him to his vet twice and the emergency pet hospital all within a week before we had to help him go gently in to the night. We loved him dearly and he is sadly missed.

Hello, I had been feeding our kitty,Mattie, the Special Kitty brand pouch food. She didn't like regular treats like the dogs, so I would buy her the moist cat food as her special treat. Little did I know that she was being poisoned everytime that she ate it. We took her to the Vet because she could hardly walk, the Vet said that she was bleeding internally. She had blood in her urine. We decided to put her to sleep so she wouldn't suffer anymore. This was before we knew about the food recall. I thought at first she had gotten a flu bug of some sort. I had no idea that she was slowly dying. It breaks my heart to think that when you try to spoil your pet with special treats and they end up dying. She was only 4 years old and the most loving cat. She would talk to you whenever you asked her a question. We really miss her.

My boy Smaug (black lab) passed away in November of similiar symptoms, The one vet in town was out of town at the time and I called a vet in Anchorage AK and had to ship him out on a jet that evening. Sadly He didn't make it, he was 4 yrs old. I fed him a combination of Kibbles n Bits and canned Pedigree chunks. He's sorely missed.

Menufoods is reporting only 10 animals have died! I have been reading multiple reports from families who have lost pets, and sometimes more than one. This company is not disclosing the full extent of the problem. Are you all aware that they have added to the recall list? I wouldn't feed anything canned from any of the recalled brands. My pug Rupert is being treated for acute renal failure caused by Nutro Ultra. Saturday this food wasn't on the list, and today it was. And the companies aren't answering their emails or phones.

don't know if this is related to whats been going on but i figured i would share me story away. my dog has been experiencing the same symptons as the others. he vomits, won't eat, and is very lethargic. since we got him he has been eating purina puppychow heathly morsels and soft chews. about a week ago i had to buy a different kind of purina(purina complete) and just two days after having this product. my vet treated him and sent us home with an IV to give him 4-5 times a day. he hsn't ate in 5 days and we know we are going to lose him.

I am a kennel owner and breeder of Pomerainians. I have added Pedigree canned food to the dry food which is Purina Little Bites. Most of my poms have become very sick in the last month, with these symtems. Only because I have been raising dogs for 37 years, and have more knowledge than the average pet owner, was I able to save all but one. I too have large vet bills, and heart ache. I hear sad stories a lot from pet owners, and this one is uncalled for. Pets are an important part of people's lives, and in most cases, losing a pet is the same as losing any member of the family. I hope this is a wake up call to the pet food industry. The dogs who were fed another brand of dry food, and no canned food, are fine, healthy and have shown no symtoms of this kind, so I know I haven't been dealing with a virus or disease. I know it is the food. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who have lost or are losing their pet due to this.

i have been using nurtra max - i have 3 huskies and a cattledog I was out of dogfood sunday. I went to the pet club store and talked to the manager, who said it was just the wet food. i feed my dogs the dry only. monday - i had 3 dogs throwing up and 1 who wouldn't even eat dog treats. all were aliittle slow with warm noses and ears. monday night fed them Wellness brand dog food. they seem to be ok right now...worried if any damage has been done. my vet said to wait and see.....might have to take them all in for testing. But in the last few months i had noticed my dogs eating alot more grass and throwing up yellow stuff. talked to my vet again who said maybe it might be the dog food not working well with there systems.........

We lost two elderly dogs last Thursday, March 15. One became ill on Monday and the other on Tuesday. Since the first dog, a labrador. had advanced cancer, so we thought it was just disease progression. However it was odd that they both died at the same time. They had been fed ALPO dry food, not their usual dog food, from March 8 - 15 They stopped eating after that and suffered extreme lethargy. The second dog vomited shortly before he died. They died within 12 hours of each other.

my dogs have been sick lately they have always eaten iams mini chunks DRY dog food in the green bag. when they both got diarrea and our wolf hybrid also did some vomiting; my wife inspected the food and said it smelled bad. our boston even had blood in his stool. she purchased a new bag and the boston got better but our wolf hybrid remained sick and wouldnt eat. my wife purchased him iams puppy and he has slowly improved but did vomit twice yesterday. we were VERY SUSPICIOUS of the dog food 3 weeks ago before the recall but they are saying dry dog food isnt affected. we are concidering a switch after a lifetime of iams loyalty.

Just yesterday i went to the vet because my 7 month old maltese has bad fleas. The vet said that he was fine and gave me tips for ridding the fleas. It just so happened the he also ran out of food and that i was going to petsmart after the pet visit. The guy at petsmart told me to get Nutro Natural choice (dry)so i did. Today my pup vomited 4 times. The vomit was mucus textured, but a clear foamy color. Petsmart said that they took all the recall foods off the shelves, and that it is only wet foods, but after hearing all of this im starting to think that the dry food i just purchased isn't safe either. if someone could pleeaasseee help me at all it would put me at ease at least a little. he is just so young, and he is my family.

I have a Italian greyhound 12yr old. I feed him Pedigree can and Kibbles and Bits dry. A few months ago he started to urinate on the floor at night and started to act very strange. He didn't seem to bark and had blood in his stool. I did take him to the vet, but they didn't find anything in his urine. They suggested bloodwork, but he started to get better. All of the sudden last week he is starting to urinate at night again and is thirsty all the time. I know this is going to be another expensive visit to the vet. I just wonder if this is connected to this dog food recall.

This is horrible. I think this Pet food thing goes back to last year. I had a healthy 12 year old Bull Terrier who was in the best shape of her life. She had a tendency to gain weight so we put her on Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Weight Management Chicken & Rice Formula Chunks in Gravy. Out of nowhere she got horribly sick. I thought maybe she got poisoned by something but never thought it would be the food we were giving her. The vet was shocked as she had just seen Edith and she was fine. After several IV's and Vet visits she had to be put down. This happened last June. I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else around that time.

I hope that pet owners are aware that the liver can be included too. How could it not be if there in poision in the system it filters out into the liver. My 3 year old dog was tested and his liver tests were high. Now on medication.

And do you only test once? How do you know iF the test could be neg today and tomorrow the test could come back positive with renal and liver disease?? What days would be safe to say "WE ARE OUT OF THE WOODS???"

THERE IS NO PROTACAL FOR THIS AND THE COMPANY IS HELPING.

I recently lost a pup too, although they're saying it's not a dry food problem, I'm beginning to wonder. Koda would've been 3 this May 5. He was a black labrador retriever, good dog. We fed him Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice and occasionally would give him the vegetarian formula (he had skin/ear issues). He stopped eating for 3 days...day 3 he ate a little, but the next morning when we woke up he had thrown up a couple of times...mostly yellow bile from his stomach. I took him to the vet the next day, his core temp was way down, they thought he ingested a toxin of some sort and maybe was septic. They wanted to keep him, but I couldn't afford the $1000 vet bill, so they gave him IV fluids in the office and a couple of injections, mostly for the upset stomach, some meds and sent him home. He would perk up for a day or so, but never really got his appetite back and silly me, I gave him canned food just trying to get him to eat something, anything. The next day I took him back to the vets for more IV fluids, he perked up that night, but then went downhill quickly after that. That Friday morning, he was the worst I had seen him. He had thrown up several times and was laying in it. He could hardly move. I took him to the vet and he collapsed getting out of the car. They ran his lab work and it came back positive for kidney failure...his BUN, Creatinine and phospates were all really high. They kept him and put him on fluids, but it was too late. He died overnight. The entire illness from beginning to end was less than 2 weeks.

I agree with Jan, that this has possibly been going on since last year, because in late September, early August my 1 year old Border Collie suddenly became sick. He would not eat for days, wouldn't / couldn't even really walk. I took him to the vet, he was running a very high temp., he was give a shot and antibiotics, he did pull through, how I thank God for that. I had been feeding him Ol' Roy can dog food. Like I said I'm not sure if this is related but it seems like it fits to me.

My 3 dogs began vomiting last week. I felt that it was food poisoning, possibly from getting into the trash! The spaniel mix was at the vet's for 5 days because he was losing weight rapidly and unable to hold down food. he stopped vomiting when switched to Hill's prescription canned food at the vets. She kept him for observation ($509-)

I had poured beef broth over the food to entice them. the 4 yr-old Bull-Mastiff and pug-mix continued to eat little and the bull-mastiff kept vomiting.

I just opened a new bag of "large-breed" Eukanaba dry food. When I saw the recall, I picked up the spaniel-mix from the vet ( she was confused by the symptons in the 4 1/2 yr dog.. and I made some baked chicken with minute rice. They ate it hungarily... and have kept 3 meals down and are showing signs of normalcy.

I feel that the Dry Eukanaba food should also be watched. I am absolutely certain that this food caused my very healthy pets to vomit. They have been eating it for at least 4 years resulting in nice coats and healthy active dogs. the dog food was the last thing on my mind while I spoke with the vet!

Our dog died two days ago. He had ALL of the symptoms of kidney failure: decreased appetite, greatly increased water intake, increased urination, vomiting, and urination. He had some Mighty Dog in a pouch. But his normal food was dry Alpo Gravy and Mighty Dog in a can. I think all of these foods should be checked.

Pet Food Recall What About Our Dead Pets And Vet BillS?

Sue  says:

I switched my 14 year old mixed breed dog to Nutro Nautral Choice Senior dry dog food a couple of months ago because of food allergy issues. On March 1st we took her to the vets because her urine was blood re. She had lost quite a bit of weight, was not eating well, and was lethargic. The vt treated her for a bladder infection and she has improved a great deal. However, I feel that the dogfood caused her problems. I refuse to feed her that food now even though the dry food has not been put on the recall list.

I DON'T THINK WE PET OWNERS ARE BEING TOLD THE WHOLE STORY. I BET THERE ARE A LOT MORE BRANDS AFFECTED THAN WE THINK INCLUDING DRY. MY DIABETIC DOG HAS BEEN EATING NUTRO POUCHES ALONG WITH NUTRO DRY. I STOPPED THE CONTAMINATED POUCHES BUT AM WONDERING IF I SHOULD THROW OUT HER NUTRO DRY FOOD AS WELL. THE WEBSITES FOR THESE COMPANIES DO NOT EVEN APOLOGIZE IN A LETTER TO SAY THEY ARE SORRY AND ADDRESS EVERYONES CONCERNS. THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE OR AT THE VERY LEAST LET US KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

My family has fed our pet's IAMs their entire lives and we've been fortunate enough to of not lost them to illness's related to their food. However I have a very healthy / active 5 yr old male cocker/shelty pure mix. He was first raised on IAMs but then we switched to Nutro Natural Choice. Over the last 6 mo's we started giving him the wet Nutro pouches on / off. As of recent he's had an occasioal bad diarrhea. Today it continued w/ spotted blood and vommiting. Of the wet packs recently purchased they've been identified on the recall list including a packet we fed him this past saturday. I'm hopeful he's not impacted by all of this, given he's soo energetic and playful. We visit the vet tomorrow morning.

My 2 dogs have been sick for 3 weeks. I had been feeding my younger dog the Iams Mini Chunks Dry Dogfood and my older dog the Iams for mature dogs, purple bag, dry dogfood. Both dogs were sick with vomiting, and drinking alot more water. The young dog is better but the older dog is still sick. The vet thought her heart was beating so fast that she was passing out and losing control of her bladder. Now I wonder if it was the dogfood. I think the dry dogfood is also a problem!!!

For 4-5 years my 2 cats have been on Nutro Max cat food and some times I'd give them Champion wet in the morning. One of the cats kept vomiting and after over $1,000.00 and a Barium Study the vet could not figure out why the one kept vomiting. I put her to sleep June 2006 because she got a tumor either near the kidney or liver area.

I now have a new cat and the new cat that has been on DRY Nutro for 6 months has vomited several times in the past 3 months including once today.

I got a large dog 2 years ago and she has been on Nutro for large adults and when I put her on Nutro with Glucosamine and Condition she began to vomit and eat grass and vomit then too. She'd puke up all her food or yellow stuff...it varied. She became lethargic and lost her appetite. She pee'd in the house mid January for the FIRST time and she did it infront of me! I switched to Beneful thinking the Glucosamine condition was making her sick and since the Beneful is like junk food/candy I figured she'd eat it and it did bring back her appetite. After she finished the big bag of Beneful I put her back on Nutro Glucosamine condition and she became lethargic and she urinated in the house for the second time a few days ago!

I took her to the vet and she did bloodwork and found my dog to be healthy. My dog doesn't seem healthy...she is lethargic! I even had her tested for Lyme disease. Everything came back negative. I'm returning the Beneful for a refund and the cats and dog are TOTALLY off Nutro dry products since they posted recalls for wet. It just didn't make ANY sense to me that ONLY the wet is contaminated and not the dry as the SAME ingredients are being used in both AND....AND...according to the FDA there is NO ANSWER as to whether it is the wheat glutton or not...they are just GUESSING. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT IT IS THE WHEAT GLUTTON...IT IS JUST AN ASSUMPTION.

I bought some very expensive pet food for the 2 cats and the dog made by "The Blue Buffalo Co." which is holistic healthy food however after 24 hours one of the cats puked. I don't know what to do. Continue on the Blue buffalo Co. food or begin to cook for them. I already know the answer. I love my pets so I'm cooking starting tomorrow.

If some of you people reading or posting cannot afford to get tests for your pets...ASK your vet if they'll take monthly payments. If not, call around to find one that will! I also believe that these blood and/or urine sample tests will be paid for eventually by Menu Foods co. or the brand names even if they were inconclusive. I am seeing that a lot of people LIKE MYSELF are getting test results with no findings or results. These should be covered as well. They do tests on the show "HOUSE" all the time that are inconclusive...until the end of the show when the last test shows the disorder, disease or poisoning. Our pets are vomiting and the vets don't know why. When it's too late...their kidneys or livers fail and the pets die but they don't know why this is happening. While I was at the veterinarians a lady I talked to told me that the vet told her that her 6 month old boxer had a "sensitive" stomach and she was to switch from IAMS to something else!

I'm glad I found this site cause I thought Purina was safe as in not having any recalls.

I used to feed an old dog boiled chicken, brown rice, cottage cheese and peas. It's late and I'm going to look for recipes for cats and dogs tomorrow that I can cook for them. I'll post the recipes in a day or two.

Call the FDA Federal Drug Administration. 1-888-463-6332 and talk to them or leave a message. Also, the FDA rep for Philadelphia Pa's phone number is 215-597-9064.

I would also like to recommend that EVERYONE that comes to this bulletin board to PLEASE email the link to this bulletin board to your veterinarian, the local newspaper and television stations. Tell them your story but ask them to read everyone else's posted here. I gaurantee you they will broadcast our concerns. I was on the news 3 days ago telling people that I thought the dry should be recalled. Next day Good Morning America was voicing the same opinion. Now I see people from everywhere making postings that they are having problems on the DRY pet food as well! People need to HEAR that there are others out there loosing their pets to DRY and not just to the wet recalled foods. Also, that though the pets are vomitting or lethargic that test results are showing nothing until it is too late.

Our voices need to be heard, our baby's lives are at stake...contact your local news agencies so that veterinarians could be better informed as well as the public.

Sincerely,Eva Ordo

Hi,

Last week my border collie Jordan started severe and sudden diareha which was very bloody, vomiting and now my corgi. They are both UTD on everything, healthy happy dogs, and not old either. This was a sudden onset. They were both eating Pedigree dry dog food small chunk. Is Pedigree on the list???

Thanks,Kris

I just wanted to say one more thng, I had my dog checked at the vet........no bloodwork, as it didnt occur to me and the vet had no idea why she would be having diareah and blood in it. Anyhow, I'm going back to cooking for my dogs as of the morning tomorrow, already thawing the chicken to cook. I'm not taking any chances. I also put in an order for Flint River Ranch food (homemade dog food)

We lost our beloved dog Rosie. She would have turned four in a few weeks. She died on February 23, 2007. She had the same symptoms as the other deaths. She was eating Alpo Prime Cuts and Pedigree Chicken & rice. Even though these are not on the recall list, I honestly believe this is what killed her.

I did notice for the last week her appetite was not what it was. She did eat, but many times her dog food was barely touched. Well last Saturday, I noticed she appeared depressed and was not herself. She did eat that day, but as I said I should have known something was not right.

Well, Sunday morning the kids informed me that Rosie had vomited about five times. She did have heavy drooling all day and was drinking lots of water but was turned off by food.

That afternoon she stilled appeared very down and layed around alot. She did walk but very slowly. When she got up, I noticed she left a round blood stain on the cement. When I lifted her tail she had a slight bloody discharge from her rectum. I also noticed her tongue was gray. She had a beautiful deep pink tongue before.

I knew she was sick but had planned to get her into a vet asap Monday morning. Later Sunday afternoon she got up from her blanket and went to the grass to defecate or urinate. She strained for quite sometime and went layed back down. I did not see anything that came out, but it was getting dark. I did notice around 11:00 pm Sunday night her stomach looked slightly swollen.

Unfortunately she passed during the early hours of Monday morning while we were sleeping. I checked the spot where she tried to defecate or urinate but only saw very few drops of bloody water. This is the only thing that came out. I did notice another spot on her blanket that was a bloody rectum discharge.

I am so upset and miss her dearly. I never thought she was going to die so quick. It has been driving me crazy why my little Rosie died. Now I might have an answer. I thought she may have gotten ahold of a poisoned mouse, never thought her food was poisoning her. This is unbelievable. Cheryl/Lousiana

MY 4-year old dog, Charo, became ill with similar symptoms, throwing up & lethargic, on March 3. Playing one minute, vomiting the next. She went outside after throwing up and after 10 minutes we found her lying on the ice, barely breathing gray tounge. She ate 1lb of trail mix stolen out of my suitcase the day before, so we thought this was the cause - we hadn't heard about the recall. We rushed her to the emergency vet where she threw up and defecated blood. The vet kept asking us if she could have been exposed to rat poision. Here kidney tests were OK, but her liver tests were off the charts and she was having problems with her clotting times. Vet was perplexed, and still thought she may have had rat poison. She had fluid IVs, two plasma transfusions and stayed at the ER for 3 days. She made it through all this and it took about 1 week for her to get back to about 80% of normal. We normally feed our two dogs a mix of Bench & Field dry plus Trader Joe's canned. Charo is the smaller of the two dogs at 20lbs; Louie is 60lbs. Occassionally, we will feed Alpo canned when we run low, which might have been the case around the time Charo got sick. Aside from the trail mix (which I'm fairly certain Charo would not have shared) both dogs eat the same food, just different quantities.

I just opened a bag of kibbles & chunks three days a go from purina. Our dog shaddy 4Yr old yellow lab, sherpard started throwing up on friday was still sick yesturday. My other dog Dakota 5yr old huskey, rott, mix barely ate which has been normal for him lately. See we just switch from pedigee dry to the kibbles & chuncks, on pedigree dry neither of them would eat the full dish that is why i switched food. These foods are not on the recall list.

Iwas on this site last night reading all the loses of loved ones, the questions, & the stories. My mother inlaw who feeds her two girls Nutro Lamb & rice dry had just called me asking about her food, Because this morning she woke up to finding vomit in her kitchen by her side door and her patio door with blood in it. She had asked me if i had heard or read anything about diamond dog food & cat food (she also has two cats). Well my finding are very conflicting!!!

CBS News .com Has a story sayin I Quote The recalled pet food Was sold in 23 States under the brand names Diamound, Country Value & professional, And Bears the date codes Mar 1 2007 through June 11 2007 The FDA is advising consumers to immediately stop using the product.

23 States I live in MN which is not listed. But you go To Diamound Food, It states Diamound food wet & dry are not Associated with the Menu Foods recall. (Real funny NOT!)

My sister who has cats dogs & every kind of pet in a pet shop found her cat dead under her porch after eating special kitty the other two are sick. Do Imind to Tell You She has 4 kids.

She brought all the food back to wal-mart. Here in MN Duluth.

As For alpo My Family put are dog to sleep last january 06 For? kiddney Failure 9 yrs old small dog

Beneful I had to put my scotty to sleep that was his food Feb 06 Iwas pregnant at these Putting to Sleeps And Held my dogs In my arms crying as i said I love You & I Will Miss You. Brought Them Back Home To Be Buried In my yard.

On Mar 2, 2007 we returned from a week long trip to find my baby girl dead in her kennel bed. She was laying in her normal sleeping position, she had a pool of blood that had come out of her nose with no signs of any injury. She was still warm and we did not know what to do so we put the kennel and her in the truck with me riding with her crying out my "I am sorry for leaving you.....s" in hope that maybe somehow the vet could help her, not knowing for sure she was gone (mostly in disbelief). The Dr. confirmed she was gone and said he did not know what from, maybe something internal in her sleep like a heart attack etc...He said we could drive her to a main city for an autopsy or bury her in our yard as he has done with his beloved pets. She has a pretty flower area memorial with a pedastal birdbath with an angel watching over. I have left her collar with tags, one that states (my family loves me please call... and the other her pet insurance tag) sitting in the bowl. I miss her very much. She was a very loved Rotti 5 years old in good health as far as we knew. She was fine the night before as far as our house sitter knew. Since then our 4 year old choc lab has been very sick no appetite, fever, vomiting eating lots of grass throwing up yellow bile etc. The vet thought it was a flu bug so treated it as such with meds. She has continually gotten worse and as of Fri. she has had a complete workup, blood, xrays, etc. All the tests are not in yet but the only thing they found so far is elevated liver counts. Dr. has put her on a liver med, also antibiotic and a prednisone to boost her appetite. She is eating again (2nd day) but is very weak. I am only feeding home made food to her, rice, meat, veggie and cottage cheese. Nothing else seems safe. I had been feeding them Kirkland chicken, rice, and vegetable formula dry with kirkland canned food with some extra people food for approx 3 mo. after the vet suggested I change foods (because of a skin irritation back in Nov) I switched from lamb and rice nutro (green bag) from Costco which I had used for years until they stopped carrying it. With one dead and another very ill I just had to post this after crying reading all the other posts. I know we have not heard the whole truth on this and now believe the food I was feeding them must have something to do with my poor girls sudden death and the sickness of her very sad and sick sister!! My heart goes out to you all!!

Hi shell:

I know exactly how you feel. My four year old dog was in great health. She went down so fast and we did not know why. I felt so alone until I heard the bad news.

My dog did not have blood coming out of the nose but from her rectum. They both had to have internal bleeding. Her tongue was so gray probably because of the blood lost and shock was setting in.

My heart also goes out to everyone who has had a pet suffer illness or death affected by their food. This should not have happened.

Just the thought of what happened brings tears to my eyes. I went to the store the other day and spotted Rosie's favorite squeaky toy on the shelf and cried like a baby. I just can't help it. I just wish I could have her back! She was the best dog we ever owned. Great with my two little girls. As you all know, you will never replace them.

I have been feeding my two dogs Iams mini chunks mixed with Alpo beef cuts in gravy for at least 3 years. On February 1, Malek, our 7 yr old lab refused to eat and began vomiting a foamy liquid. Feb 2 I fed him raw ground beef and he ate it, Feb 3 he refused to eat the ground beef or anything else. He drank water constantly, continued to vomit, urinated frequently and his urine was very dark in color, he became lathargic, had trouble walking, and whined a lot. I first took him to see our vet on Feb 3. Symptoms were: refused to eat, vomiting, excessive thirst, etc. The Vet gave him a shot of B12 & took blood sample and we got results two days later. He was in bad shape...kidney and liver failure. We took Malek to the vet every single day for a shot and check up until on February 10 (my birthday) he was so bad we thought he may need help with the pain. We took him to a 24 hr. emergency clinic where he was put in an oxygen room, put on an IV, and attempted to be made comfortable. He was only there an hour before he died. We never suspected the food, but now must wonder. Until two days ago and serious thought I was still feeding our Cocker the Iams mini chunks and Alpo cuts with gravy because they are not on the recall list. I took him off the Alpo first and now I am so worried about the Iams that I don't want to feed him that either. He has been vomiting some all along just like Malek did. It just didn't register that it probably has to be the food.

I first posted #43

I took Diego to the vet on thurs, Mar 15 because he lost a lot of weight in a week's time and was vomiting along with our Bull Mastiff , Odin. The vet kept the spaniel-mix, Diego for 5 days for observation and blood tests. I asked her to look for signs of poison.

She stopped the vomiting and blood in the stools with Hills canned prescription diet. She stated that 4 year-old Diego has suddenly come down with diabetes. I told her, but wait, Odin has the same symtoms! It makes no sense. She showed me Diego's glucose level was over 400 when he came in and had dropped to 100 in 5 days...

My pug mix refused to eat the dry Eukanaba the entire week. instead , she picked out the human food.. meat that I always included. She's ok.

Odin continued to vomit while Diego was in the hospital, and absolutely hurled the Eukanaba 10' on the day I brought Diego home. They have eaten Eukanaba for 4 years. I thought that they had caught a poisoned rat or had gotten something bad from the trash can!! I just didn't occur to me that it was the Eukanaba until last Tues when I caught the news!

Since then, I have been giving them the canned Hills prescription mixed with instant rice and baked chicken. They are all eating it and holding it down.

Diego is still lethargic and needs to gain some weight badly. I'm still very worried about him. He is all bones!

the loss of other's pets is heartbreaking.

I am absolutely certain that something is wrong with the dry Eakanaba purchsed recently!

I have tried to give my dogs Canadae dry chicken food. It appears to be safe. It's first ingredient is chicken.

I don't know if they are afraid of the dry food or just prefer my home-cooking.. but my dogs won't touch the dry food.. even when mixed with the cooked food.

I emailed Eukanaba about my concerns last week... no response. of course, their lines are crammed and i can't get through. I wonder how many dogs must die from the dry food before they put out a recall!

JILL, I  USE IAM'S DRY dogfood for my rott.  He had exibited symptoms of nausea and vomiting with extreme malaise and hind legs weak and uncordinated, excessive thirst, urinated in his bed at night. He could not get up and had to carry him to the car.  The Vet told me 4 weeks ago that it looked like renal failure, or could be viral.  I mentioned it sure seemed like poison not knowing then of the recall.  The Vet sent him home with a shot for the nausea and antibiotics. After a week he got better but became ill again after a week off the antibiotics.  We are on the third round of antibiotics and feeding him home made ground chicken and rice.  It has been a roller coaster event.  I DO NOT TRUST IAMS DRY FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!  This was soley his diet!!!  IAMS DRY FOOD!  PLEASE someone test this too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Are the companies afraid they will loose everything?      Linda

Just for anyone who may be keeping track. Our Golden died suddenly Saturday. Friday afternoon we went out walking, later she was in the yard with our other Golden when I left with our children for a swim meet. Saturday AM when our neighbor came to feed the dogs she found her dead on the lawn. She has been eating Beneful dry kibble from Costco in California for about a year. I am very suspect of recall only addressing wet and pouched foods, as fillers are also in kibbles. Any recommendations for a new dry food for our other Goldengirl? As I see from various web sites Beneful has been mentioned by others and we will be switching. Missing my girl. Hugs to all who have lost a great buddy.

My beloved yorkie died suddenly Sunday night of acute renal failure. Although she was thirteen years old and on meds for kidney problems, she was doing well for over three years. However, Pebbles got very ill and blood tests showed elevated levels indicating she was already in renal failure. The doctors were puzzled by the quick reverse in her health despite her age and asked if I fed her any of the recalled food. I advised that I hadn't since she had been on prescription only food from the vet for the past three years, however I did use the IAMS Savory Gravy, which I discontinued the week before when I had heard of the deaths and even though the gravy is not on the recall list, I am wondering if it contributed to her death and if anyone else might have had used the gravy and experienced illness or death with their pet.

Suspicious of Dry Nutro Max from 2006  says:

Oh friends, how I empathize with those who have lost pets or are struggling along side them now. I am visiting this forum because, I, too have to wonder whether Nutro Max dry dog food may be what compromised or ultimately killed the love of my life last summer, my ten year old border collie. He had thrived for years on Nutro Max High Energy, but quite suddenly in May 2006, he just inexpelicably lost his appetite. He would take his dry food only after I mixed it with something else. Then other symptoms that seemed at first to be transient cropped up, like discoordination, a drippy nose, a low grade fever - all things that came and went and didn't seem problematic in and of themselves. But by mid summer he was limping, greying, and doing the things other posts here have described - taking in extra water, chewing grass and even eating soil, going out to the yard over and over again. I kept taking him to his vet - she first misdiagnosed him as simply having Lyme disease, but having not done the titer (more thorough) test, I believe she was just seeing antibodies from an infection my boy had successfully resisted three years prior. She should have looked harder. There was a lump on his back, and a few days later, more lumps started to appear. I kept calling back as he wasn't was responding to the antibiotics she prescribed for him.

Finally, she took an X-ray and said cancer was all through his body. I'm no vet, but once upon a time I did spend a few years in a lab coat getting a bio degree, and I have to ask - can prolonged expsoure to a toxin such as aminopterin in the digestive system respond with lesions that are cancer-like in appearance? Sadly, of course, we lose many great friends to cancer, and often on short notice. But the coincidence of my dog having eaten NutroMax dry for years, and the sudden onset of abnormalities beginning with the appetitie in mid-2006, really makes me question how a vibrant, strapping, hearty border collie - one who was given a clean bill of health in a dental cleaning - can go from swimming in grade four rapids one month to not being able to stand the next.

God knows I mourn my baby every single day. He was a brilliant dog that never needed any training, even though he came right off the streets - he was a gift, a guardian angel. May the Lord forigve me if I hurt him!

God bless all.

hPLEASE, EVERYONE HAVING ISSUES WITH DRY DOG FOOD "PLEASE, Call the FDA Federal Drug Administration. 1-888-463-6332 and talk to them or leave a message. Also, the FDA rep for Philadelphia Pa's phone number is 215-597-9064.

I posted message #53 earlier complaining about DRY Nutro Max cat and dog food. I also stated that while I was at the veterinarians a lady was leaving with a young boxer dog that the vet thought had "a sensitive stomach" and told her to switch from IAMS.

Just yesterday I had some young snobby little inexperienced girl call from some state veterinarian organization...they are handling return calls from FDA I believe, and she was stating that there are NO reports of DRY dog food issues. I grilled the little air head and she said that they must have gotten about 450 calls (I was number 20 something on her list to call) and that they discuss all the calls amongst themselves. I told her to go to this web site and see how many complaints of dry dog foods there are. I told her Good Morning America talked about it too. She seemed to get off her stupid pedestal and listened to me. She was just a stupid young girl trying to do a simple job of calling people back to tell them the dry was okay...if you complained about it. I told her IT IS NOT AND THERE ARE SEVERAL BULLETIN BOARDS WITH PEOPLE STATING SO. She took some information down and that was that.

Posting here is good because we are making the public aware. Calling the FDA phone number is IMPORTANT to let them know so they can further analyze issues with the pet foods...ESPECIALLY the DRY ones.

My dog and cats have been on The Blue Buffalo Company's holistic and healthy dry pet food and 6 days later my dog is not lethargic. The vet found nothing wrong with her in the blood work she ran but I know something has been wrong with her and she has been vomiting. She seems to stop when I put her on Beneful (when I run out of Nutro). I've bought two bags of Beneful since December and one large bag of Nutro in-between. Of course she is off both Beneful and Nutro.

The main ingredient in The Blue Buffalo Co. pet food is "DEBONED CHICKEN!" the next ingredient is "chicken meal" then, Whole Ground Brown Rice, Whole Ground Barley, Rye, Oatmeal, Chicken Fat, Potato Flour, Tomato Pomace, Whole Carrots, Whole Sweet Potatoes, Ground Flax Seed, Alfalfa, Herring Oil, Sea Salt, Barley Grass, Sunflower Oil, and then about almost a hundred more HEALTHY ingredients. It has active nutrients and antioxidants for your dog's health and well being. It supplies your dog with "unsurpassed nutrition plus the ultimate protection of high potency nutrient and antioxidant package found in no other food" It is pricey but my dog is feeling better. www.bluebuff.com is their link.

The following link is very insightful eye opener in regard to the disgustingly horrible way they make pet food and how grotesque, harmful and contaminated the pet foods are and how they use actual dog carcasses as meat in some of the refining plants....ie: euthanized dead dogs, cats, elephants, animals, etc. It is a very interesting and informative read. This is the MOST informative piece of literature I have ever read...it will make you think twice before you feed your pets anything. What is written on this site is backed by books and studies. I will be trying the BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet pretty soon here that is recommended at the very bottom of their page. I think it will be cheaper than feeding them Blue Buffalo Co. dry foods and I will be in control of what they actually eat. And then again, I just might stay on the Blue Buffalo pet foods regardless of the price it is that impressive. Before you start any kind of a diet like this...make sure the diet is appropriate for your pet...research the subject for your breed or get in contact with the lady this site recommends...a pet nutritionist for B.A.R.F.

Once again, please call the FDA and report issues with the dry. I'm seeing Nutro mentioned repeatedly as well as others.

Dear Suspicious of Dry Nutro Max from 2006 -- Comment #79.

Please read my comment #53 and the one I posted a few minutes after you posted yours. The beginning of #53 states that I put my cat to sleep in June 2006 and I too had a similar experience as you with Nutro Dry. I thought the tumor she got was part of life at the age of 9, her mother just died a few months before her at the age of 10 from breast cancer. Her daughter was vomitting for a year and the vet couldn't figure it out.

Please report your story to the FDA.

Thankyou for posting and letting others know that toxins could cause tumors over a period of time. Hmmm, toxins....cigarettes...cancer tumors...duh! F@#$%ng Nutro I hate them for using grains from China that were contaminated. Menu Foods manufactured the USA rat poisoned foods but if you did a search for Nutro Dry rat posoin you'd find a different manufacturer for NUTRO bastards had a recall of DRY pet foods in the oriental countires including China. Not Menu foods, but another manufacturer...so in 2004 Nutro KNEW that there were ISSUES with grain from CHINA! I will post on this later...I have to go to work now.

MORE needs to be done...CALL THE FDA!

Sincerely,

Eva

I called Friday and I got a returned call from my regional FDA. I still cannot believe this happened. She took down my name and address. The woman was very concerned and said that the two foods I complained about were going to get tested.

She admitted that my dog had all the symptoms.

I originally posted # 58. God I miss Rosie so much!

Cheryl

The two foods my dog was eating wsa Pedigree Chicken and Rice and Alpo Prime Cuts. She is now dead. I explained thefoods were not on the recall list but need to be checked also.

Same at comment #83 - I also had a 13 year old beloved pet. Mine was a Chihuahua. I also fed her O'Roys Dinner Rounds. With her age, her teeth were getting bad. I switched her to O'Roys meat & gravy in the cans, thinking it would be easier for her to eat. It didn't long for her behavior to start changing. I thought it was her age. I have had dogs all my life. I thought I knew. Before long she wouldn't even eat ground beef or rice. She was only 3 1/2 to 4 pounds when she was healthy. You can imagine what this did to her? I could see every bone in her backbone. At first she drank a lot. Then she started peeing with blood in it. Then she quit just about everything. She wouldn't even raise her head when I walked into the room. Her eyes told me she was ready 3 days before I was ready. In January I made the decision to put my baby down. All the while thinking it was her age. Now - I am not so sure. Did I poison my little Chihuahua? Now I will never know. How can I have confidence on commercial dog food?

I have a 2 1/2 yr old Lab. Is the dry dog food really okay? How can I tell? The vet tells me NOT to feed her OUR food. How do I know what to believe? I am so confused.

Fellow pet owners. I checked the list but it looks like not all brands that are supposed to be on the list is listed. So for now, I think it would be best if we stop feeding our pets any commercial dog food until they say that the list is final. I've been feeding my dog ALPO thinking it's ok but reading this thread I see someone's dog died from it. Thoughts? Is ALPO safe? Thanks.

We feed our dogs nutro natural lamb and rice small bites. The first time our female became sick she just wouldn't eat for a day and a half and the she seemed ok. Our oldest male got sick and couldn't walk straight; he was vomiting but his blood work also looked ok. They thought it was his back because he had disk problems on his xray. THEN my smallest Boston got really sick...diarrhea and walking sideways also. It's like their bottom half of their body is really drunk or stiff. He stayed at the vet and recieved IV fluids and antibiotics but was feeling great when he came home. Tonight I am sitting here writing this in the middle of the night because the smallest one has bad water diarhhea again....and it has that same sick smell. I'm really scared after reading all these post. I bought this food after doing months of research because I wanted my dogs to have the best! I am very angry!!! My guys blood work so far has been ok but something is definitely going on. There is a common denominator when generally healthy animals all of a sudden are getting really sick with the same symptoms!!!!

I have stopped feeding my three dogs any commercial dog food. They will be fed only homemade bread daily (mine) and a kosher hot dog a few times a week.

Until this situation is resolved I urge everyone to use extreme caution in choosing their pets food.

I feed my 2 year old German Shepherd dry Nutro beef dog food. On March 21st he urinated on my couch and did it again the next day. I immediately suspected a health problem (although I had not put two and two together) and took him to the vet.

He has a bladder infection with a high amount of crystals in his urine. He is now on antibiotics and a prescription dog food. He will have to go in for x-rays and more tests in about two weeks.

This has been a hard hit on the pocket book and I will spend whatever it takes. Although if Nutro is responsible I do think they should cover the medical expenses.

On Mar 24 PETA.org requested that all menu/ related dry foods be recalled and tested due to the many pets with similar illness after eating said food. Today is the 29th...

I left a msg for the FDA today.

I have posted twice.. 43 and 74.

Diego has been home since last tues from his vet-stay. He's still holding down home-cooking. But is lethathargic and still not the same dog as before eating from the new bag of Eukanaba lg-breed dry food.

Hopefully more people will call the FDA which might force a recall and testing.

I have three dogs. I fed them Nutro Natural Choice small bites & senior dry food. All three got sick, with vomiting including yellow bile, bloody diarrhea, urgent need to urinate, excessive thirst.

I took them to the vet and had a blood work up done on all three. The two that ate most of the food have kidney failure, and the other one has liver failure.

I contacted menu foods first, they told me to contact Nutro, which I did. (they told me their insurance company would be getting in contact with me) I also contacted the FDA. Anyone who's pet is ill or passed needs to do this. I would advise everyone to not feed their pets any of these foods, dry food included.

I'm very sorry to everyone who lost a beloved pet to this horror. I am very upset and sad about this turn of events.

Susanne Henry  says:

My baby Magic was a healthy happy 14 year old dog who was fed Iams pouches and began to throw up yellow bile and foam. She would drink what seemed to be gallons of water and would pant heavily. She wasted away to skin and bones and each of the three animal hospitals I took her to performed all these tests that came up inconclusive. I watched my dog suffer and I am just sick over this. I will never feed any of my future animals any store bought pet food again. I will take the time to feed them FDA regulated human food so I will not have to see another pet die so miserably again!!!!

I miss that special little girl and wish that I could take the pain of her last months on earth away.

Something is very wrong with Nutro Senior dry food (don't buy it; store are selling it at a discount so they must be aware something is wrong too). We thought our dog had a stroke. He had all the symptoms of the wet food, but he only eats dry food. We were going to put him down and then this news started coming out. We started feeding hamburger meat. He is doing better. He had toxins in his liver. The vet and fda were both unconcerned and wouldn't even take samples of the dry food for testing. Something is very wrong and I would not buy any Nutro/IAMs/Eukanaba.

OK, so here it is, all of us who have been wondering about DRY dog foods. Read the article in USA Today for Fri, March 30. They have now identified a new chemical ( a plastic - melamine) that is showing up in the dog food and at the end of the article it mentions this product "The apparently melamine-contaminated wheat gluten also was shipped to an unnamed company that manufactures dry pet food. The FDA is attempting to determine if that product, imported from China, was used to make any pet food, Sundlof said. There is no risk to human food, he told reporters" Stay current with the news so you can protect you babies. Also, Menu Foods is supposed to have a new press release later today.

Put a call into your local FDA, even if you just leave a message. The more calls they receive, the more we ensure this won't be brushed under the table. We have to advocate for our animals.

Take a look at this Reuters article regarding Menu Foods last press release, apparently as far back as March 6 they were aware of a contaniment problem with Chinese grain supplier ( and probably much earlier to break that kind of contract, find another source to be able to keep production up, shipping, etc.). Why was the recall put in place only last week. They waited to see what outcome would be and for public outcry and sadly, needdless loss of our beloved pets. Shameful.

Here is excerpt from article

TORONTO, March 30 (Reuters) - Menu Foods Income Fund <MEW_u.TO> said it is no longer using the Chinese company that supplied tainted wheat gluten after the chemical melamine was detected on Friday in the pet food at the center of a massive recall.

The company discontinued using the supplier on Mar. 6, and food manufactured after that date is safe, Paul Henderson, Menu Foods' president and chief executive, told reporters at a press conference in Toronto.

Shameful, shameful ..............please put a call into your local FDA.

FORD PINTO  says:

Back in the seventies, Ford Motor Co. had ample evidence that the mounting of the gas tank in the rear of their Pinto model was hazardous - that is, was prone to explode upon impact, which was a scenario that should be assumed for an automobile. This design flaw was causing fatalities and horrific disfigurements, and Ford was totally aware - but their lawyers got together and figured out that it would actually cost less to settle a few law suits than it would to halt production and re-design the Pinto. So they kept selling Pintos, even though they knew their product was defective. Other legal minds have likened this to wholesale murder. We should expect the same from any corporation, including Menu Foods. It's clear where their priorities are - just consider the fact that all this time when they've been posting the link for the list of recalled foods, you will see the many contaminated brands listed on the web site for "Menu Foods Income Fund".

Hi Everyone

I originally posted #58 and recently called my regional FDA and told them that Purina "Alpo Prime cuts" killed my dog and that this food needed to be checked. They told me it would be. Well, this morning I learned that it is being recalled. Why did they hide the fact that they did get ingredients from Menu Foods. I knew they were hiding something. There website was saying "safe to eat", I knew this was BS. My dog was perfectly fine until it hit her. She was soo very sick.

This has me so darn mad and upset. I was buying the six packs from Walmart when Rosie became sick and died.

Our shepherd mix dog was fine until she began eating Purina Puppy Chow. We found her paralyzed and assumed she had had a stroke, and attributed it to her age (14 1/2). Because dry food had not been mentioned, we dismissed that as a cause.Yesterday we had to put her to sleep--a painful decision, but necessary.  She had stopped eating and drinking, her teeth were clenched, and she couldn't move without us physically turning her. Her eyes stared vacantly at us, and she began moaning in her sleep at night. I find it very hard to believe that the dry food did not contribute to her decilne. Like many others who have written in, I believe companies are not doing enough to check into this. It's a tragedy.

Does anyone know if any dogs have gotten sick on Alpo Chop House? It is moist food in a can. The food I've been feeding my dog has the same numbers of the Alpo Prime Cuts with gravy. For the past 6 months he has been urinating a lot and on the floor which is unusual. We attributed it to old age but now I'm thinking it might have been his food. He's a 13 year old Boston Terrier with lot of enery until a couple of months ago. He is old but I don't want him to die like this.

Hello, After watching the news and reading all of your comments, I'm feeling sick. We have been breeding and showing bulldogs for 15 years now. Over the years, we have fed our dogs Pedigree, Nutro, Iams, and Eukanuba. About 3 weeks ago, our dog, Rowdy, started throwing up and heaving really bad. He was sick for several days. At that time we didn't even think it was the Iams dog food, but thought it was the canine flu that has been going around in our area. I'm absoutely convinced that this so called canine flu is contaminated dog food. We aren't feeding them anything but chicken, hamburger, rice, vegetables, and turkey burger now. NO DRY FOOD AT ALL! I am so sorry for all of you that have lost your beloved pets and or had to go through the agony of seeing them sick and suffering. Gail

I took my 2 year old Samson to the vet on March 16 because he had stopped eating, had been drinking much more often and not acting like himself at all. I had been feeding him Alpo cuts and gravey off and on besides Kirkland brand dog food but on the 12th I switched to mighty dog can and by the 13th hes was acting off. So on the 16th off to the vet, and what do you know kidney failure! So since my cats all love to help eat the dog food Noah (1-1/2 and they eat kirkland dry and they were on friskies can but now on 9-lives at the moment)on Sat (17th) morning was way off and had a fever that continued to raise to 106. His blood work showed only double the white count and with meds is ok. Meanwhile Samson is on twice daily sub-q, his numbers are still way too high and the vet thinks he was born with this, but I'm thinking that if alpo (and maybe mighty dog can) are being recalled that I may have been slowly killing him! Odd that the day I take him in I read about the recall? Today his is acting like himself but tests still have to be done and my pets are never going to have commercial food again! Maybe the companies will see that we as pet owners will take matters into our own hands to make sure what our pets eat is safe and they will see the results of their neglect by slow sales.

I feed my dog DRY Iams Mini-chunks, and I went to the Iams site, which contends that all Iams dogfood is made by a Proctor & Gamble plant - not Menu Foods. However, my dog is not quite herself and has had diarrhea the last couple of days (even going inside the house, which she NEVER does). I woke up this morning at 4:00AM and found she had another diarrhea episode in our living room. I started worrying about the food (although diarrhea is not typically listed as a symptom) and having been able to go back to sleep since. I am going to take her off the dry Iams and see if she gets better. At this point, when "SAFE"-yesterday-but-recalled-today foods as being added to the list, it seems prudent to just feed our pets "people" food. I also ran across some PETA information about how Iams practices animal cruelty in the testing of its food, and so I am unlikely to go back to using Iams. If you do use Iams or Eukanuba, you should put "Iams" and "PETA" in your search engine!

I believe my last post was post # 87. At any rate my furbabies (three boston terriers) BUN and Creatinine levels are climbing now (these are the blood levels that show kidney function). They are now at the top level of normal. My little guys has risen 5 points since his stay five days ago in the urgent care hospital. They were eating Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice DRY and I thought it was safe. Now we're having to give our babies 100 ml IV fluid bolus daily X 7 to try and save them. We retest in a week. I am now feeding them home cooked chicken and rice until I can figure out what to do. This is big....REALLY BIG!!!! It makes me wonder just what is actually happening here. You know what I mean? Hi I just wanted to let everyone out there that 3 weeks ago I fed my 13 yr. old Rott Zeus a small package of Petigree chicken and rise for adult dogs. That very night he started vomiting all over the place for 2 weeks. He became lathargic and weak. I had no idea of any recall on any dog food, so I just thought," ok, he's sick " and I pampered him and never gave him any more. He got to where he would not eat anything. He had weighed a hefty 130 pounds. I finally made a vet appointment for him , for Wednsday the 28th of March. In the wee hours of the morning on the day of his appointment, I was up with him at 1:30am. He was dieing right before me and I couldn't do a thing about it. At 4:45 my beloved son, friend, and companion died. Still not knowing about recalls, I had him cremated that day. I believe it was from the 1 pouch of Pedigree I had given him. When he died he weighed less than 100 pounds.

Why did they have to lie. If they had posted ALL the dog foods that were affected my sweet Katie would be alive. I trusted the fact since Moist and Meaty Lamb & Rice and Pedigree canned puppy food were not on the list that they were safe. Saturday, March 24th (after the shelves were stripped) I purchased Pedigree Puppy food and Moist and Meaty on Sunday. Monday morning my little pom ate as usual and Tuesday morning couldn't stand up. The food went right thro' her, and I thought after she was up and around on Wednesday nite that she was ok. I took her off the other food and gave her some soup and some Healthy Morsels puppy food (dry) that my great dane is eating. Friday my great dane started throwing up but didn't think anything about it since he chews on everything until my pom just fell over in the yard. She couldn't breath and just staggered around. She stopped eating and took a turn for the worst Saturday nite. Today, April the 1st, 2007, I came home from church to find that she had thrown up and worse than ever. I called a vet open on Sundays and headed down there. Less than 5 miles from my home she died in my car. I took her by Winn Dixie to show them since they said they are only pulling foods on the list. I hope now they will believe us when we say it is in all the food wet and dry. What do I feed a growing Great Dane and Rottie. And when will it ever stop. If the US would grow there own grains, farmers would have jobs and we would be safer.

We feed our 1 year old yellow lab PEDIGREE DRY FOOD. Three weeks ago we had to admit him into the hospital for severe dehydration and KIDNEY FAILURE. He was in the hospital for 4 days on a I.V. He was getting better so we brought him home. I'm thinking the only reason he was getting better is because he was not eating the dog food. Now he is home and we had him eating again. (PEDIGREE DRY FOOD). Once again he is vomiting, not able to get up, and very skinny. We have to take him back to the vet at 9:30 in the morning when they open. I pray he makes it threw the night. I had been feeding my dog IAMS Large breed dry dog food. He became very lethargic and had lost his appetite about 3 weeks before the petfood recall. He would sit with his head in the food bowl as if he was starved, but when I would put the food in the bowl, he would sniff it and walk away. I suspected a bad bag of food, so I switched to the IAMS chunks. He ate for 2 days, then he quit eating altogether. After that the recall came out. We switched his food again to Pedigree, and his appetite returned, and he looks much happier, with alot more energy. I think all menu products should be recalled until this whole mess is cleared up.

I lost my beloved 11-year old golden retriever, Angel after feeding a brand new bag of Beneful purchased from Costco in Lake Elsinore, CA. We had been feeding this brand for about a year. My other dog, a Visla named Bones was sick also. The illness was observed on 2/24/07 as slightly lethargic and little interest in food or water. By 2/25 Angel was not wanting to get out of bed. We had no idea he would prove to be gravely ill. He and Bones had gotten into a tangle with some coyotes on 2/23 and we just thought they were sore on the leg. By the morning of 2/26 we gathered Angel to the vet & it was immediately diagnosed as poisoning. The vet insisted that we must have had rat poinson around the ranch, we did not. Sadly, Angel was too sick to save. He was put to sleep as I held him head and told him how sorry I was. There was no announcement about a food problem so I thought it was my fault. The next morning we found our Visla, Bones almost dead. We took him in and because he wasn't as far gone or perhaps because he was younger, the vet said it's worth a try to save him. He was touch and go for a week but he made it. He was on kidney medication for 3 weeks and antibiotics for 1 week after he left the animal hospital.

My 13 week old puppy Raja had been eating Nuto max wet food and the natural choice dry food from the breeder and with me. She has been changed from her food because we thought she was having a food allergy. After three weeks of food trials and explosive diarrhea, and vomiting last night -we took her to the vet today. The vet says she appears to be poisoned because her liver enzymes wouldn't even register. Her renal labs were normal. She is now on a liver prescription food and meds to help her liver. We have recently lost a very precious companion. He name was Ranger. He was only fed Eukanuba Puppy and Diamond Puppy. He was on the Deamond Puppy when he became sick. We at first just thought he was "sad" because my husband had taken an evening job and we thought Ranger was missing him. He quit eating. He would sniff his food and act like he was going to eat it then he would walk away...After several days of this, we decided that maybe he had "dog flu". We took him to our vet. He was giving antibiotics and something for the upset stomach. Ranger still did not eat. We decided to get a 2nd opinion so took him to a differen vet that my parents use. Was tested for parvo, it was negative. Thought it might be Corona. Ruled it out. Ranger continued to throw up a yellowy, mucus, foamy puk. He was lathargic, dehydrated (although, he was drinking tons of water) but little did we know that while we were gone to work, he was puking up the water also. He became so weak he could barely walk. Ranger was an 8 month old AKC German Shepherd. He was very active until this. My husband was training him for protection. He and my husband were "best buds". He had diarrea, blood in the stools, 103 fever. I would go out and sit with him before we "admitted" him to the vet clinic. He would just lay his head on me. Now Ranger was not your average size 8 month old GS Dog. He was very big for his age. He lost 30 lbs thru all of this. The Doc had put IV's in him to help. As long as he had the IVs he seemed to be getting better. His blood clotted a lot though. We were able to take him home, but had to take the IV's. Ranger tried to eat, but when he did, (although it was very little) he began puking again. This time, it had blood in the puke. He would just look up at me like he was trying to tell me something. He broke my heart!!!!!!!! I am a christian, so I would sing praise and worship songs to him to try and comfort him. I even read my Bible to him. The Bible tells us that God cares about all of our cares....Big or Small...so I know that God cared that our beloved pet/companion was hurting and we didn't know what to do.....Our Vet kept saying that he didn't understand why he wasn't responding to the treatments. Kept saying that he acted like he had been poisoned. This is just a mild part of what our Sweet "Little" Ranger went thru. The Doc. finally decided that it was time for surgery to see if he could find something out the ex-rays were not showing. Ranger made it thru the surgery, but did not make it thru the evening. He died approx. 3 - 5 hours later. Has anyone had any bad experience using Diamond Puppy food. Please let me know....Thank you, My heart goes out to all Pet Lovers that have lost their Best Friend, Family Companion or that might be going thru this same horrid thing right this minute. If you can't afford a vet, PLEASE call and ask if you can make payments....our vet is letting us make payments. Most vets will work with you because they too have a love for animals...that is why they chose their profession. Audra

Audra

FDA says it is blocking wheat gluten distributor, but reading article on msnbc (see link below) it sounds like we are only still at the tip of the ice berg.

New info concerning wheat gluten distributor and potentially new recalls this week. This article is from April 2 msnbc, this should be the link http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17915607/

It seems that this will only get worse before it gets better. This article also mentions recall for Dingo brand chicken jerky (salmonella found).

I am checking all related stories daily so that I can protect our other pets. Remember, a call to your local FDA will make them stay on top of this. They have already recieved more calls than they get all year and this is making them pay attention.

For our sweet trusting animals...........

Ref: Audra post #129

I am so sad to hear your sweet companion is gone. I am so sorry for your loss (big hugs)

I too have lost my loved companion and have one that is very sick (my husbands baby) but of course I am "the mom", we have had her since she was 5 weeks old and raised her on goats milk due to the breeder removing her to soon from the mother. We love her dearly and are very devoted to doing whatever we can after losing another so quickly!! my other posts are #67, 72, 76, 103

We loved and love our dogs, I am struggling with some of the points you brought up, we are also praying for our pets and for others and their owners. After tears for the pain and the disbelief of this whole situation I question, "what good if any can come from this"?

In saying that I would also like to say we are at this point taking a very active alternative approach in dealing with our sick girl.

We are feeding homemade meals

(after 2 weeks it gets easier) including vitamin supp. plus enzymes to help mineral absorption. Blending the foods to help her weak system digest.

Milk thistle for the liver (which is a herb) I have also been giving her colostrum to boost her immunities. along with vit c and some homeopathic remedies. I AM NOT A DOCTOR NOR DO I SUGGEST FOR ANYONE TO TREAT WITH THESE unless you consult with your vet or find a holistic vet practioner for advise. We are focusing at this later stage on helping her whole body health to be well.

Also doing research and reading, it all has been helping us so far mentally and it seems good for the situation at hand.

We are also seeking advice from holistic medicine along with conventional.

I am still working through the the whys and the what are going ons?? and on many occasions the why did this happen to my sweet girls???

Again I truly am sorry to all who are hurting and have lost their loved companions. If you have another pet keep looking for answers and what others have to say it has been very helpful for us.

Thank you to all who have shared your stories and pain, it just may help someone else, that is why I am writing this.

I NEED TO ADD TO MY OTHER POST: anyone that reports to a store manager, as in the one for Wal-Mart, that refused to remove items IF they in fact are the recalled product ned not to go any farther than your phone to your favorite television station for the call to action department!! They will be on it like white on rice, BELIEVE IT!!! These folks are JUST like you amd I, they love and cherish their pets and some down here have had near misses already!!

I am one of those that can't run little fluffy to the vet every time he or she sneezes(actually that would be a hoot here because my chiahuahuas are TRAINED to sneeze for treats!!) too cute, but I use my own knowledge and skills even to the point of sutures and some castrations. That's life on the farm, lets face it, so when animals are freeroaming outside as the lady above posted there is no PROOF the food did the dirty deed but when Puff spent his days in the flower beds and on the lawn chairs and all of a sudden he was nowhere to be found after filling his sillyh belly with poisoned food for days or weeks, depending on amounts received, well, to me it sounds pretty sure to be food problems. I have more to say but must say it later....

I am trying to get info on the lawsuits being filed. Is there specific suits for specific feeds fed to specific animals?I have lost 2 cats, my mom lost her cat, I also took care of 2 kittens for a friend of mine for 1 week-end and 1 of them fell violently sick and died 3 days later.......I have one cat that was sick and fought hard and seems to have overcome the illness thouggh he is still thin. Also, sadly I feed dog and cat food canned and dry to my poultry to bring them through their winter moult and start laying again, well, I had 2 young peababies keel over and my Midnight male, usually huge and thriving has been battling to stay alive for MONTHS!! God know how many I've lost as some free range and turn up missing and I never find them.....On Christmas Eve day a ferel cat that had been eating here for a long time I believe turned on me and latched onto my arm teeth and claws for NO reason doing dreadful damage!!! He may have been sick and in pain and I was the closest thing to be annoyed at. He was captured and tested and did NOT have rabies but we can't know of other problems as he was put to death for his wickedness......How sad it is all for the sake of trying to save a couple cents per can.well, that's the condensed version of my story.Best Regards,Sally Holcomb

This is a link for a news article on msnbc from April 2, 2007. It mentions that they are expecting more pet food recalls this week. Also, I see in another article from the FOX network that DelMonte foods is doing a recall. While checking out Purina web site, their web site was kicking back error messages ( we feed our cats Friskies dry foods) when I was searching under Cat and Dog food products.

I know many people have switched to foods that had been identified as safe and no recall, but now even some of these products may be questionable. Please be safe, your 'babies' are counting on you.

I've posted 3 other times regarding my wonderful dog, Diego. ( 43,74,and 91)

I had to make the decision to put Diego down yesterday. He was all bones, able to hold home-cooked rice and chicken and carrots down, but not able to gain weight because his kidneys and liver were shutting down. He was brave and sweet. I'm not sure how he was able to walk.. He will be severely missed. The vet says he clearly had diabetes. The fact being: He was a healthy weight, active, and sweet natured Before eating what is clearly tainted Eukanaba Dry lg-breed food. He and my BullMastiff, Oden, were vomiting at the same time for 2 weeks!! ( it didn't occur to me that it was the food ) They quit when I switched the dry food for homecooking. So , he may have had some undiagnosed illness... maybe not. He wasn't ill until eating the Eukanaba.

I know that it isn't as easy as purchasing dry food, but, I will be making home-cooked meals for my other 2 dogs . I doubt that I will ever go back to commercial food. It was a tough lesson and $750- in expenses too. I am a limo driver and don't work that much or make that much. It's been a horrible 3 weeks....signing out... sadly, Susanne

Hi Adrian:

I was told by a representative (FDA) were I live that they believe as long as the canned or dry food does not contain "Wheat Glutin" is should be safe. My puppies food contains corn glutin mill which is different.

I checked into to this after losing my 4 year old dog on Feb. 26th due to this toxic food.

This is so sad! I know I am not alone in this awful mess but it has been so hard trying to accept my dog's death.

My heart goes out to all the owners who have lost a pet or now have an ill pet. I am dealing with the pain and understand what you all are going through.

My 4 1/2 year old Cairn Terrier has been healthy since the day we brought her home. She is very well cared and has all of her shots to date. Shortly before the dog food recall scare came out; she became lethargic, started vomiting, and had blood in her stool. The vet had me watch her close and put her on a diet of rice and boiled hamburger. (We had been feeding her a combination of Beneful and Ceasers). After 4 weeks, she is finally getting nursed back to health and for the first time yesterday; she walked an entire mile without laying down. I understand that neither of these were on the recall list; but something made this otherwise healthy dog quite sick. My vet said it was fine to continue with a balanced "dog-approved" home-made food diet as long as I added a vitamin supplement each day.

Thank you for the info on Peta (re: #98) Shell.

I'm still hurting from the loss of Diego.. and the vet bill of $750- I have the food and the date and place I bought it .. according to my atm charges. I don't have the bag or receipt. Eukanaba/ Iams rep called me and took my info on Monday. I really don't hold out any hope for financial help.

I spent about $80 a month minimum on dog food and treats. I am so over it.. making home made food is actually easy. I know what my two dogs are getting. I will not be giving my money to the commercial dog food industry Ever Again! That's about $1000 a year they will lose from just little ole me. This has been a devastating 3 weeks that I don't ever want to repeat. Plus.. back in the 50's.. dogs ate human food anyway!

I am adding a drop of condensed multi vitamins to the carrots, rice and chicken. Hamburger makes the bullmastiff fart something awful!!! He has recovered from the 2 weeks of vomiting.. I am certain it was the dry Eukanaba large breed.

well, I will take it a day at a time. Shell , if you find a way to get reimbursed for the vet bills.. please share the info... thanks

We have two miniature schnauzers. About three weeks ago, they both started vomiting. They were being fed Beneful and Science Diet Dry food and Pedigree canned food. They seemed to get a little better, but then the older dog (12) got violently sick again and had to be hospitalized. We picked her up, she seemed a little better, but then she started vomiting and crying, like she was in a lot of pain. My husband took her back to the vet and they gave her two shots and more medicine. She had lost about 5 pounds and is very lethargic. The vet said she has liver failure, so we don't know if she will make it or not. The younger dog is not eating very well and we have to hand feed him. He has thrown up a few times too, but seems better than the older dog. We are cooking for them and after reading this website, they will not get any more store bought dog food or treats. The vet bills are piling up and what is worse, we may lose our precious dog.

Our daughter had a cat...Cloe, who was 2 years old. She started urinating around the house but didn't act sick? After a couple of weeks, she started getting sick, foamed at the mouth and became very lethargic. Within a couple of days, she died! We actually were holding her when she passed away. I thought that she acted like she had been poisoned but she was an inside cat and never got outside. It was so sad. Cloe was a fun and active cat. To see her go downhill so fast was heartbreaking. It was about 2 weeks later that the news came out about wet cat food. Cloe ate Purina Cat chow....dry. I feel that she died because of eating the dry food and we aren't hearing the true story. It is too late for our Cloe....to do over again, we would've taken her to the vet. However, many comments are saying that the vets haven't known anything either. We have an older dog, she is fine, but am very concerned about what she eats. She eats Kibbles and Bits dry. What to do????

I'm grieving with you all and know how you feel being there myself. Please visit this website http://www.petloss.com/poems/maingrp/rainbowb.htm called "Rainbow Bridge" that also has a pet loss chat room where pet owners who lost their best friends can talk and grieve and share their pain with each other. My prayers go out to all of you. I'm so thankful for the site above and this site too which helped me and others so much when I lost my pets, which as we all know, are our best friends. Please know that you did not intentionally feed your pet this food to poison them and that feelings of guilt is going to happen and is natural, since you are a caring and loving human being. My sister is grieving and feeling guilt as she too lost her beloved "Woogz" during this poisoned pet food recall tragedy and fed him food and he passed within 3 days of going from healthy to passing on. If this helps one of you, I've done what I could to help.

This sounds like it might have been going on for years! My dog had these symptoms two and three years ago. My vet thought it was anti-freeze poisoning (same symptoms). Antibiotics and steroids kept her alive. I also had to make her drink by pouring water in the side of her mouth. Ihad to change her food to get her to eat (FROM bENIFUL TO PEDIGRE FOR LARGE DOGS). This is what she eats now. Just so you know my angelhas never been near anti-freeze!

After all this recall stuff and pets getting sick and dying, I researched it myself. The commercial pet foods are NO GOOD. I found out that it is very important to read the ingredients, and most commercial foods have by-products (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) and grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat (the wheat gluten is what has been contaminated in the current recalls). I found a pet food formulated by a veterinarian that has none of those ingredients and I am feeding that exclusively to my cat now. You can look at my website to see all the information about the food. The veternarian who formulated the food also says cats and dogs should live well into their 20's, that the nutrition that is lacking in commercial pet food is what shortens their lives!

March 25/07 - My husband and I took our 7 year old Cocker Spaniel to the Animal Emgergency Clinic after she had been throwing up during the night, drinking high volumns of water prior to being sick, labored breathing, and bloody droplets of stool through out our home. Also she refused to eat anything the next morning which is very, very unusal for a Cocker. She had been eating Nutro Natural Choice Lite Food. A full body xray revealed nothing unusual, however the blood work showed that anything relating to the liver was off the charts. After 5 days on Amoxicillin and Metronidazole, she is back to normal, but eating a diet of homemade dog food. I'm not convinced it was not the food, have not thrown out the Nutro food. The bill from the vet which was $475.39 was a small price to pay to still have our beloved dog. However, I feel that the Canadian government should regulate pet food to avoid situtations like this happening again.

This is in response to the post 139 by Adrian C. Before, as well as after, I had to put down my beloved Shadow (who I spoke of in the forum regarding the pet food recall lawsuits #64 at this site at the following link http://hubpages.com/hub/Pet_Food_Recall_Class_Acti ) to sleep as a result of Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy I started researching a lot of the pet foods and their ingredients. I still have 2 cats, a Macaw, and an Umbrella Cockatoo at home. My parrots are on a highly organic food called Harrison's Feed. I had my cats on Nutro Gourmet Classics Hair Ball Formula cat food and I have since switched them to Castor & Pollum Natural Ultramix Indoor Feline. They seem to really like it and it does not have any by-products, fillers, wheat, corn, growth hormones, or artifical perservatives, colors or flavors; they have dog food products as well. I got my cat food at Petco. If you want to try buying on-line the Wellness brand of food looked promising. I hope this might help you with your decision.

Our beloved dog Porsche had to be put down on Wednesday April 4/07. She was a beautiful, healthy 9 yr old Sheltie/Huskey cross. We came home from a Spring Break trip to Disneyland to a sick dog..just happened to have bought her a new bag on Nutro Natural Choice Senior Chicken & Rice DRY shortly before we left on our trip. When we arrived home, although she was happy to see us she was not her usual self. Reluctant to eat..she had vomited up in one of our bedrooms. The first full day we were home, she hardly moved from her usual spot..very lethargic but a few times during the day she would perk up & seem ok..she also had really weird smell on her breath, not her usual dog breath..very chemically smell. This went on for a few days over the weekend and first thing Monday Apr 2, I called to get her into the vet. He did a rectal & there was blood on his glove..drew some blood to test & sent me home with some antibiotics..she threw up 3 times shortly after we arrived back home. The next morning, Tuesday, I was hoping she be feeling better - nope. The vet called later that morning - the test results were in - her kidney enzymes ,Creatinine & Phosphate levels were off the charts by 6 or 7 times higher than they should have been. All the while I kept asking if it could be the food...and he kept insisting dry food wasn't affected and there have been NO cases of sick animals from the food in Canada! Vet told me to get her in for IV treatment ASAP & that they would do another blood test in 24 hrs to see if levels went down. Her nose started to bleed while they were hooking her up onto IV. Still 3 or 4 vets I talked to, between ours and the Emergency clinic all insisted that this could have NOTHING to do with the food...they all insisted she was probably a kidney problem that had been going on for a while & then MYSTERIOUSLY presented itself acutely. The 2nd blood test results were in after 24 hrs on IV and her levels were all still high & some levels even higher - they felt that there was no hope for her - too much damage done. We poisoned her with her food - we should have suspected something because she didn't even want to eat it!At 5:15 that Wednesday evening, we had the vet administer the euthanasia...and she was gone..our beloved little Porsche...God how we miss her.....

Here's the first reported evidence -

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=304734

We can all assume there's more bad news that has not yet been reported, and that the people responsible for this are doing all they can to save their own behinds and obscure the truth. We see how they work.

My beautiful baby was taken from me as I was easing my mother into death from an inoperable brain tumor. I cannot believe these bastards took my sunshine away in my darkest hour. I need not curse them, however - I know about karma. But I also practice law, and I will NEVER be quiet about this until I see reforms as far up the line as they need to go. I will advocate for this cause until the die I am rejoined with my mother and my precious canine companion.

God bless all who suffer from this. God damn those responsible.

I brought my bullmastiff/rottie home when she was 7 weeks. The breeder was feeding her Nutro natural choice large puppy breed (dry). We continued to feed her the same and wouldn't you know, the very evening we brought Molly home she was urinating blood and was not feeling well. I took her to the vet the very next day and had her on antibiotics. She has now been treated for 3 bladder infections. Molly is 5 months old and at this very moment of writing this, I just took her outside because she has diarrhea and has had this for the past few days. I switch Molly's food to the Solid Gold Holistic Line because I also have a 5 month old golden retriever (Captain) and this is what the breeder was feeding him (not to mention a much better quality of food). Molly has been on this food for several weeks now and was doing fine right up til this past couple of days....where she has started having diarrhea again. I was trying to think as to what could be causing this (again) and then realized that the dogs were both given dog treats at my husbands parents house this past weekend (I believe it was some pedigree brand...). Captain has not shown any signs of illness....Molly was doing a lot better up until this past couple of days...I believe it was the dog treats and am going to confirm the brand with the inlaws later today. Captain is so much healthier than Molly and I believe her bladder infections were due to what were use to feed her.... Now they are both on Solid Gold Wolfcub large puppy breed (bison and salmon)...it has NO wheat gluten or corn gluten and all of their ingredients is sourced domestically with three exceptions: meat is from New Zealand, potato protein in Europe and tuna (for cat food) in Thailand. If anyone is interested check out their website: www.solidgoldhealth.com. In regard to Molly, I am going to monitor her this morning and if she still has her diarrhea I am going to take her to vet (who know her by name...she has been so often) speak about the food recall and have bloodwork done on her.

My condolences to everyone for their loss. Our pets are part of our familys and are loved greatly!

Bobbi  says:

I fogot to add that both Molly and Captain had quite a few dog treats over a period of 2 days (Grand Parents wanted to spoil them). Molly has vomited (only once) but mostly has diarrhea...Captain as mentioned previously is quite healthy (with the exception of slightly darker urine at the moment). They have been eating quite a bit of grass lately, however, I was not overly concerned(will mention to vet).

I forgot to mention I also have a golden retreiver/lab (almost 13 years) who is on Proplan senior and has not had any problems. He does throw up approx. 1 -2 times a month but I attributed this to his poor digestive track (ulcers) and the fact that he will eat anything and everything when we go for walks if I am not watching him 100% of the time. For a dog his age he is doing well and has quite a bit of energy (plays with the pups all the time).

All I know is this is very scary and confusing. First of all I am a firm believer in believing that we are not being told everything. I read peoples stories on how their pets are getting sick and are not eating just the pet foods that have been recalled. I have a 1 and a half year old lhsa apso, in the past i had 2 other dogs in my life and I was always a firm believer in giving them table food instead of dog food. My two dogs lived happy and healthy lives, 1 dying at 20 yrs old and the 2nd at 19 years old. Well with my new dog I was giving him just cesar wet food mixed with kibbles and bits dry because they were the only foods that he wood eat. About a couple of weeks ago I noticed that my dog with start with these dry heavings and then vomit. Knowing that these dog foods I was giving him was not on the list I didn't think anything of it at the time. I had broken my leg and was in the hospital for a couple of days when i came home my mom said that he was throwing up and not really eating. Finally I said enough is enough. I went to the store and bought him turkey. He loved it. He began eating again. Now I cook for him as it he was my child. Grilled chicken, steak, hamburgers, hot dogs, turkey he loves string beans and carrotts, rice, baked potatoes. Needless to say he hasn't been sick a day since I got him off the dog food. I do have a vet visit next week for his heartworm so he will get an all around check up while I am there. I know that he will be healthy beacuse what's good enough for me to eat is good enough for my dog.

I can't believe what I'm reading -- there have been problems with Iams Mini Chunks?  That's all our Wheaten has eaten since we got him from the breeder.  I read the ingredients on the bag and thought he was safe since there is no wheat/wheat gluten in it.  Trust me, he's eaten his very last Iam's.  (So far he's fine, thank goodness.)  My heart breaks for everyone who has lost a pet.

My Dog has been getting sick very frequently with Kibbles and Bites original too. I am up here in Canada, in ontario (hamilton) and my dog usually would be full of energy, charging the food dish, and gobbling his food, now, after changing from Purina beneful to Kibbles and bits original my dog has no energy any more to do anything, he vomits at my feet after eating no more then about 1/2 a bowl of food about 20 minutes after eatting. I am getting angry at my pet, but I am starting to wonder if it's the food, and this recall is not going far enough? Is there anyone else here in Canada, who feels that we are not getting the whole story, there are many americans who are in certain states that are getting more complete lists then we are here, including more manufacturers like Diamond, etc. Please speak up and email me, I can not afford massive debt with my dog, if this doesn't get better I will have to put him down, I have already spent over 200 this month on trying different foods for my german sheppard Cosmo. Thanks for your help, write me back at rob.wilkinson@gmail.com if you have similar concerns.

I have two dogs - chocolate lab and a puggle. Both have regular checkups every 6 months. Two months ago I switched both dogs to Science diet dry. My dogs have been vomitting and had either loose stool and severe diarrhea for close to a month now. They have been checked and checked. No worms or diseases to explain their condition. Vet says its not the food and that it is a good food to trust, but I don't know what to trust. Currently my dogs are so sick they are on boiled chicken and brown rice. They have to go back to dog food some time. I am just waiting till they start to add dry dog food to the recall.

Pedigree Dry Dog Food and Milk Bone brand dog bisquits is the only thing my dog ever ate up until getting sick. I notice by the end of last summer he no longer wanted to eat his Pedigree. He started throwing up occasionally about a month before Easter. Easter day he had blood in his urine and the following day he vomited blood. I rushed him to the animal hospital where I expressed my concern about his dog food. $400 later, the vet said it might be a bladder or kidney infection....bull shit. She put him on Clavamox (amoxicilan) for two weeks which ended 2 or 3 days ago. I also immediately took him off all dog products and now I home cook for him. I still fear he has damage because he is right back to peeing a lot. Vet also said that because I have never had him nuetered and he is 7 human years old that his prostate could be irritating his bladder. I have researced this for weeks now and have not found anything about that problem with un-nuetered dogs. PEDIGREE DRY DOG FOOD AND MILK BONES ARE STILL NOT ON RECALL........AND SHOULD BE!!! Don't take a chance of your pet getting sick or dying ....feed them home cooked meals with vitamin supplements.

I have 4 tiny poodles and have always fed them homemade food. Here is the recipe from my vet: ground chicken and ground beef, 4% small curd cottage cheese, 2 cups quaker oats soaked in low sodium chicken broth, peas, string beans, 2 tablespoons salmon or fish oil (health food store or break open capsules from grocery store) Mix together and make into meatballs the size of your dogs portion. Bake them at 350 until they are completely done. Freeze into bags and warm up in microwave until warm and serve. They should love it and it is all digested so there is very little waste and smell. I am so sorry for all of the pet owners who have lost pets in this mess, I hope this recipe helps.

I lost my Joy on March 10, right before the recall. She had been throwing up more than usual, but acted totally normal. She ate only Iams dry and canned. She had some science diet jerky treats that week also. She was very precious, golden mix, the best part of my life. I have a family, but was closer to her. I am so devistated from this 6 weeks and no relief for the pain. I'm not sure if life will ever get better. She was only 4 and I told my 12yr old son she would see his kids be born. I am a christian and can only believe we will be together again. Now what to feed my cats... I just got them Felinade.. we got a rescue dog who came with Nutro..I will change that today. Why is this so under the rug...This is horrible that companys can get away with this. Why isn't Jeraldo or some one exposeing this??? I'm not interested in money settlement, just justice. I never would buy any food product for he that said from china, how could I have known???

I posted a comment a couple of weeks ago and said that my 12 year old schnauzer was sick. She died last weekend. She had lost more weight (about 8 lbs) and was so skinny. The vet said she had liver disease, but it is so ironic that this all started when the news come out about the dogs and cats dying from eating contaminated food. The vet tried everything and I still don't know how much we owe, but nothing worked and now she is gone. Our little schnauzer (one year old) is not eating and if he does eat a few bites, he throws it up. I am scared to death that he will start losing weight and the same thing will happen to him. We have tried cooking food for him, everything we can think of, but he only eats a few bites, if he eats anything. As I said before, we had fed our dogs Beneful, Pedigree canned food and Science Diet dry food along with various types of treats. I think the pet food companies are all too afraid to come out with the truth. Now they talk about people getting sick from eating beef or pork that was fed dog food. I think this is still not getting the attention it should and it is scary.

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1 1/2 year puggle and about 5 weeks ago is when he started having symptoms. He's had bad diarrhea and was somewhat lethargic. There were 2 nights were he would dig at the door for us to let him out. I took him to the vet and they gave him antibiotics and said that he must have got into something. I guess that somewhat helped but I still feel like he's tired all the time. He doesn't have diarrhea anymore but its not always solid like it should be. He eats just fine and loves his chicken (that I make) treats. I've been feeding him dry science diet food but after reading the postings I'm not sure if I should be.

What I'm wondering is this. I'm sure he got contaminated but what do doctors normally do. Give them more antibiotics? I could go to get blood tests done but not sure if its even worth it. Will doctors just send us home again with meds? I'm wondering if I just keep feeding him like I have, will he be ok or is it mandatory that he gets treated in order for him to recover completely? Thanks for any help. karenwsu@yahoo.com

I would not feed a product which has recalls from the company. Why continue? Most of the companies are recalling products for "cross contamination" - they didn't wash or change the product after producing a "bad" product.

The vet should push fluids. There things which form in the kidneys which need flushed away.

If you want any recourse for your pet for being ill you need to go see the vet and get a statement with the lab results.

April 22nd, 2007, 2:23pm, my white shepard Trigger earned his wings, Columbus Anmial Hospital, NJ. He was truly our best buddy for nearly 10 years. He was vibrant, playfull, healty right up to about the last two months of his precious life. I first noticed that his breathing seemed to be as if he had the sniffles or something. I always fed him purina since he was 5 weeks old, but then one day Walmart did not have purina prime cuts so i bought purina natural choice, with natural vitiams and minerals. My usal store Acme where i mostly shopped from carried happytails dryfood and i started buying that since acme seem to always be out of the purina prime cuts, i didn't notice a problem with happytails at all, but i still noticed the sniffelling, so i decided to get Trigger some dog bisquits with vitamins and minerals, he was not to crazy about them. So i just kept buying the purina natural choice dry food thinking he was getting the best. He seem to sometimes be getting better sort to say but i felt something still wasn't the same about him. I then noticed bleeding from his mouth and i got really scared and a friend of mine helped me take him to the vet in town, but because i was so nervous and upset the vet refused to look at him because i did not have an appointment and he said the only way he would examine Trigger is if i could write a check or had a credit card, which both i do not have, i had cash in my pocket, he upset my dog so much my dog pooped on the floor. I got mad at my friend for bringing me their to such a heartless doctor. My friend brought us back home, had this person had asked if i had cash instead of check or credit i may have known what was going on at least with Trigger. So i did not know where the bleeding was coming from so i assumed maybe a broken tooth never knowing that there tongue gets envoled, so then i go out and buy pedigree healthy senior adult pouches just in case he can't chew the natural choice purina dry food. That seem to work i didn't notice anymore bleeding from his mouth but what i did notice is that he could not get enough water so then i started getting spring water for him since he was drinking so much water. He liked that and seem to like the pedigree pouches too. I thought everything was going to be okay with him, he wasn't bleeding anymore and was still a very hamsome dog with life. I started feeling funny about the purina choice dog food and remember how well happytail dry adult food worked for him, so that is the last bag i bought for him, towards the end he would not eat it, instead he tried everyway to cover it up. The final food i bought was the pedigree adult lamb end rice. He ate it, i noticed his last bowel movetment was dark and loose, he did pee one last time and wanted unlimitted amounts of water although at the end he wss not able to drink. Trigger held on to life because he knew our love for him, and he was just returning it, he even extended his paw out to me and as weak he was, he walked over to me and hung his head as if to say goodbye, he took his last bowel movement and went and laid down next to his dog house. I then knew something was terribly wrong just by the way he fell off the porch when i was taking him out. The hospital said he broke his leg. The hardest part was saying bye and thanking him for being my son and i, best buddie forever and always, he was able to listen and i saw the saddness in his eyes that he was not ready, but thanks to wheat glutten he did not have much of a choice. It has been a month and i still can not stop crying. The hospital said all his organs were shutting down. I thank God for bringing Trigger into our life and i know their is a dog heaven, rest in peace, Trigger, you will be missed.

Truly,

Justin and Rox

Justin and Rox,

What a story, tears in my eyes as I read it. I think every single pet food and treat you mentioned has a class action against it. Even Purina has a class action for producing sub-standard pet food and lying to the public. Pets have been getting sick from Purina, as well.

We lost our pal, Kirby, last July. He was a healthy 12 year old Austrailian Shepard/Lab mix. We had always fed him Nutro Lamb & Rice. His symptoms started with pacing and panting on a Friday night. Since he was afraid of storms, we thought the weather might be to blame. By Saturday afternoon, he was starting to walk in tight circles and wouldn't eat or drink. He quickly progressed to seemingly becoming blind and deaf by Saturday night. We had been on the phone to the emergency vet who at this point told us to bring him in. We could hardly get him in the car. The emergency vet said it was probably a brain tumor (how could it come on so quickly??) and there was nothing they could do for him. We had to put our little man down that night and lost our best friend. Now that I read all of these postings, I think he probably died from his dog food, not a brain tumor that had "suddenly appeared". Has anyone else had these type of neurological symptoms with their dogs?

I have been alternating my dogs diet between Pedigree Dry and Kibbles and Bits Dry . The last moonth or so my dog had at 1st started throwing up . Then she started drinking water like crazy and wanting to go outside all the time . I talked to a friend thinking she maybe was diabetic . She said to try some other dog food. So now I am making her dog food . She has been eating the homemade food for a week , and it is a complete turnaround , just after the 1st day . She seems back to normal . My dog is 10 yrs.old , and I think I will continue to feed her my doggie hotdish , and oatmeal with egg in it for a while to come.

our dogs eat Iams mini chunks-- and the cat sneaks some-- all three are sick this week-- the cat is acting like he got into nicotine or chocolate--- cns is affected-- and drinking is weird--- then the one dog threw up all day-- and the other dog has a spot on her rear that is bloody and all of them are acting like they are so thristy -- the vet says no recall on Iams-- but this is the only common denominator between three of our four animals -- the forth never touches the iams-- and they are always healthy- but now all are sick?! we discontinued the Imas as of today and are on Hills prescription for digestiona nd the cats are limited to their science diet! I knwo the Ima sis the problem! there si nothing else and the dogs have digestive problems awhiel the cat had CNS problems.... all can be relative to poison! oh, the cats symptoms stopped when we took the Iams dog food from him... and yes, I know he shouldnt eat it but it was not dangerous and it was only as a treat.

Both Iams and Science Diet are listed in the Recall. Science diet has a list as long as a train. Get your pets off of these foods. Science Diet is known for killing pets and providing a low quality (equal to Ol'Roy) pet food. Science Diet is an over priced junk level pet food.

You are going to get little to no help from Menu Foods. Menu Foods have been horassing people and are now ordered by the courts to have no further contact with folks who have lost pets. There are several Class Actions against the pet food maker Menu Foods. I joined a Class Action which Cathy MacIvor has filed. I really like her, she is going after several of the pet food companies and is requiring the pet food makers use truth in advertising and labeling.

She had only been feed Puppy Chow, which was not on the recall list, so we didn't know how she contacted the poison. However, just yesterday we discovered a bag of Ol' Roy Dinner Rounds in our neighbor's garage----it had been torn into and partially eaten. We have always fed our 6 year old German Shepard Nutro Brand Dog food. In July he started sniffing the food and refuse to eat it. I'm not sure why. We had taking him to the vet in July and were told he was very healthy. We started mixing in cans with his dry dog food and he would eat it. About an hour later he acted very strange. We hadn't seen any recalls on nutro dog food so we continued to purchase it and feed it to him. We had noticed that he would eat anything except this dog food. For approx 2 weeks we fed him regular food and he was fine. We then put him back on the Nutro and once again he was acting very strange. Loss of appetite , extremely thirsty, very lethargic. Believing that it was a safe product and very good for him we wouldn't change brands. My husband was going to call the vet on Sept 13th as the evening of the 12th we noticed that he wouldn't respond to our calling. We laid down beside him and kept patting him and hugging him and he just wanted to lay down. I woke up the morning of September 13th to find him dead. I would like the food tested and I'm not sure where to send it. Can anyone tell me if there is a place to have it checked? My children, my husband and myself are heartbroken.

We lost our best friend.

I am not a vet and I certainly do not want to suggest something that may make your pet worse, but I experienced a very similar situation with my 2yr old female American Pit Bull Terrior last September. She had otherwise always been a very happy, healthy, and active dog, but all most over night we niticed her appitite and energy level decreasing. She was becoming very VERY ill and very quickly. I hadn't heard much about the dog food recall at that point so it never even crossed our minds. I took our dog in for an emergency visit on a Sunday afternoon and the vet performed an exam and took a few x rays of her abdomen. They were worried about an infection in her uterus, but that turned out to be just fine. They decided it must have just been a resparitory infection and put her on a very high dose of cephalexin. Kita's(our dog) spirits seemed to be lifted just by her adventure to the vet so we were feeling hopeful at that point. We brought her home and she even ate a little soft dog food(which was a real treat from her usual hard food). By the next day she was clearly getting worse and vomitting yellowish foam more and more freguently. Her stool was horrible....very "mucusy" and either bloody or yellowish-orangish. I took her right back to the vet, but to our usual vet this time. She did a TON of blood tests on Kita as well as took a few more x rays. They were suspecting Lyme Disease(caused by tick bites), pancreatitis, gastro intestinal irritation, but everything came back normal. I had suggested I thought maybe she had something stuck in her stomach somewhere because of a previous experience with our last dog, and because she did appear to be in a little abdominal discomfort. Her hind legs also seemed to be very weak and stiff. At times they would fall out from underneath her. Well, I was wrong. Again, everything looked fine. The only thing that even remotely concerned the vet was Kita's Valley Fever titre. I know this is a virus native to Arizona(which is where we live), but I believe it has been discovered in other parts of the country as well. The vet explained to me that living in AZ would actually cause most animals and humans to test positive for the virus to a very low degree. Kita fell into that "low degree" catagory and under different circumstances, the vet wouldn't have even mentioned it. In her despiration to save Kita, she gave me the option to start Kita on a low dose of Diflucan(strange that a medicine most commenly taken by women for yeast infections would be administered here) and in my desparation, I agreed. It felt like the right thing to do although Kita hadn't been formally diagnosed with anything. The medication can be harsh on their systems so we kept a close eye on her liver and kidneys, but within 3 full days of the meds, Kita was beginning to look and act a little better. After a full week, we were seeing a significant increase in appitite and energy levels. After the full three weeks of medication, I am soo soo thankful to say, we had out Kita girl back. To this day, she is fine. She's perfectly healthy and normal. As I stated at the very beginning of this comment, we never even considered food poisoning nor did the vet. Our dog's symptoms were never explained or diagnosed, but certainly mimic several of these horrific tainted dog food cases(Kita had been eating Nutro MAX large breed). My point being, I can't promise this same medicine would provide the same results for your dog, but if there's even the slightest chance that maybe my vet thought of something your's hasn't yet.....it can't hurt to ask them. It may save your dog's life,,,,it did our's THANK GOD!! Good luck to you all, and GOD Bless! Nikki

I tried giving him boiled rice but he spit it back out. Like i was hand feeding him because he wouldnt eat it.

I dont have the money to take him to the vet. Does it sound like he could have Parvo? I dont know what ill do if i loose my puppy. I just lost a son in October and it will break my heart if casper dies.
