Is My Pet Food Safe?

"Premium" Pet food marketed and sold as "Complete and Balanced" has historically contained such items as Euthanized Dogs and Cats, Restaurant Grease, Hair, Hooves, and Diseased Animals, and other Inedible Garbage.

Because manufacturers need to ensure that dry foods have a long shelf life (typically 12 months) to remain edible through shipping and storage, fats used in pet foods are preserved with either synthetic or "natural" preservatives. Synthetic preservatives include butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propyl gallate, propylene glycol (also used as a less-toxic version of automotive antifreeze), and ethoxyquin.

Use of by-products. By-products are ingredients used which are not fit for human consumption. By-products are often floor sweepings from a rendering plant. "Animal by-product" is rendered product from animal tissues, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices." Pet food labels contain the words "meal" or "byproduct" on the ingredient label. Inedible byproducts such as bone, fat, heads, hair, feet and condemned offal are used in commercial pet food. These materials are sent to a rendering plant for processing into pet food products.

"Meat" is often rendered dogs and cats as well as other animals such as road-kill. When the source of the meat is known it will be listed as beef, poultry, chicken, turkey, etc. If the source of the meat is not known it is simply called "meat.

Rather than the wholesome pictures shown on the pet food packaging, rendering companies dispose of millions pounds of inedible waste each day including, heads, feet, stomachs, intestines, spinal cords, tails, restaurant grease, feathers, bones and dead or diseased animals rejected from slaughterhouses for use in manufacturing pet food. Amazingly, animals from research laboratories may be rendered into pet food as well.

Ol' Roy dog food, which is considered one of the poorest quality dog foods on the market, scored 5 out of 10.

The life span of your pet should be at least 20 years. Your pet's diet strongly influences your pet's life expectancy. Always look for a quality pet food which scores 10 out of 10.

I have no idea if my dog's illness last week was related to the foods she ate or not. She is fine now. She was dehydrated, limping, had diarehha, didn't want to eat, didn't want play, and at her worst couldn't even stand on her own. She had these symptoms for five days. She ate cesar wet food, one earth dry food (stop and shop sells this brand). She is all better now. She went to the Vet, and they couldnt explain her sudden illness. All ofher tests (cbc, chemistry, tic related illnesses, urine ) came back normal. She did become very dehydrated. I gave her a lot of water and people food because that's all she would eat.

Has anyone had trouble with Wellness Senior Dog Food?.  My dog was at a kennel a couple weeks ago. When I picked him up he was unsteady on his feet.  He stopped eating, walking, had diahhrea, was sleeping 90% of the time  He would (and still)  only eat boiled chicken.  The vet said his thyroid is really low and put him on medication, but I think it could have been the dog food.  He's starting to feel a little better, but is not at all back to normal.

Is anyone else having problems with the menufoods.com/recall/ list? Because everytime I click on one of the brand name links, my browser says that there is "no information" on the page. You would think they could actually have time to come up with a more competent website.

Amber  says:

I would just keep hitting 'refresh' to get to the recall list, that's what I had to do. I think the site is just overloaded by too many people. It also might work better if you click menufoods.com and then click the link from there.

To Shelley--please take your dog to the vet regardless of what he ate. His symptoms sound very serious (black stools can indicated blood in the stool) and dehydration can kill dogs (just like people) if let go too long.

Sarah   says:

From what I gather on the list, I don't think Mainstay has been recalled.

I would not suggest feeding any of the brands on the recall list. The companies use the same stuff to make the dry that they use in the wet. The dry has other fillers mixed in an may not cause as much trouble. We'll be seeing reports about the dry food, too. (I'm sure)

Is Pedigree wet dog food being recalled or manufactured by Menu Foods? My cocker spaniel never eats wet dog food, but this past Friday she was given some. That night she was lethargic, thirsty, and shaking. She was not herself. We didn't give her any more of the food. Saturday night she was feeling much better. I'm suspicious, but I realize it could have been a coincidence & something else.

Hi...I know Beneful is not on the recall BUT...recently I just lost my dog on Dec 23rd to Kidney Failure. He was diagnosed on Tues and died that Saturday. I don't need to tell you how much I have suffered wondering how a perfectly healthy dog develops kidney failure and dies that quickly. He was my little boy. By the way, I can prove he was healthy because in Sept. he had his yearly exam/bloodwork and his kidneys were functioning normally. So...maybe they haven't looked into this far enough...I'd like to know if anyone else has had a similiar experience??/ Please help...

i have a 3 year old chuhuahua who i was feeding Purina Moist & Meaty, which is NOT on the recall list. Last week she was vomiting and not eating, i took her to the vet to find that her kidneys were 75% not functioning and she was near kidney failure... after 5 days of hospitalization, $1,300 in vet bills, and no explanation of what caused this, she seems to be doing fine. I have tried contacting Purina, as well as Menu Foods, and have had absolutely no luck. What are the chances of this being a coincedence? The vet said it is very rare for such a young dog to have kidney issues. i would reccomend not using Purina Moist & Meaty pouches, as well as ANY soft or canned food untill this issure is completly resolved. From all the brands on that list, its very obvious everyones dog food is comming from the same place.

I was giving my dog Beneful wet food for 2 months. He was having diarrhea, and would vomit like once a week. Before we were only giving him dry food so I figured, the soft stools were just because the food was soft now. My friend told me I should switch to something else, I switched to Cesars and the diarrhea and vomiting stopped. He has been less spunky for the last week, and even refused food on Sunday (He NEVER refuses food). He is eating fine now... I don't know if I should just feed him table food or just take him to the vet. Any suggestions????? I don't want to over react, but he is my baby.

I called BJ's where the foil packaged food was sold just 10 minutes ago and it HAS BEEN PULLED FROM THERE SHELF. DO NOT FEED YOUR DOGS PEDIGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In December we purchased Walmart's brand of dogbones. Our lab had a seizure. She began having a seizure almost every two weeks. I questioned the dogbones because they were the only thing that changed in her three years. Please note. We did take her to a vet, who said that she was one of the nicest looking labs she had seen (weight, health) and we discussed putting her on seizure medication. We decided against it at that time unless the seizures became more frequent. Instead, we discontinued the bones, and the seizures stopped. I am wondering if this recall will eventually involve the bones/treats.

I know that Alpo dog food is not on the Menu Foods recall list, but I give my dog a few spoonfuls of Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy along with her dry food and two weeks ago she suddenly started vomiting A LOT during the night. This went on for a couple of hours and she was shaking very badly. The next day she seemed to be fine and I kept an eye on her and fed her only dry food. She didn't have any more problems until Saturday night when she started throwing up again. She had just been to the vet for vaccinations that morning though so I attributed the nausea to that. However, now with all the concern about the recall I am worried that it might be something else and I don't want to risk any kidney problems. I have stopped feeding her from the cans I had and purchased new ones, but does anyone know if Alpo was affected in any way or is pulling any of their products?

Alpo is NOT in the recall. Please look at the recipe listings....does it LOOK like anything YOU would eat or anything a DOG would eat? Our pets are not chickens or turkeys. What went wrong in the dog food was too much grain and little quality control.

does this recall involve science diet dry? i would not be surprised if this recall now involves bones and treats---as these are usually comprised mainly of wheat gluten. wheat gluten always stuck out in my mind as a highly allergic and a cheap fill to put in dog food. many people are extremely allergic to gluten and many consider it a poison in and of itself. it is extremely hard to digest as well. why are we giving it to our pets? maybe this recall will educate people as to what exactly they are feeding their pets. of course the contamination can involve other things. but beware of crappy dog food ingredients and crappy manufacturing processes---educate yourself.

animals were designed to eat their natural diet--mainly meat and a little bit of vegetables. i am personally going home and throwing out all the dog food in my home recall or not. i dont think they truly know which brands are contaminated. rely on your own common sense and side on the side of caution. maybe now is the time to introduce a more whole food diet to your pets---i am going to cook chicken and beef and other nutrient dense foods to my dog. i also heard holistic vets offer raw food and other whole food products for dogs and cats. incidentlly my dog has been having diarreah--i was feeding him beneful and science dry...and starting to cook beef and chicken for hiim. buyer beware

If we toss the pet food and go back to feeding our dogs people food, what is the food we should feed them that won't upset their tummies? I know that onions and other ingredients are deadly. Also what kind of snacks are there to replace their doggy treats that we could use?

My dog has been eating the dry Nutro Natural Choice Small Bites Lamb Meal and Rice Formula. I just bought this bag last week and started using it. Two days ago, she was sick all day throwing up and lethargic. She didn't eat. Yesterday she was feeling fine after not eating all day the day before. So she ate yesterday, the same stuff. This morning she woke me up throwing up. That makes me very suspicious of the dog food, even though it's not on the recall list. Has anyone else's dog gotten sick from Nutro dry food? I think I'll err on the side of caution and feed her mild people food for a few days.

Has anyone heard any information about Purina Beneful being recalled. I've been seeing alot of stories of dogs on Beneful getting sick - without any response from Purina. I may be a little jaded but could the company be withholding the truth???? Is there any way to find out what is really in their dog food? What we really need to know is who is the tainted supplier then track all of their sales back to the companies producing the food.

Evelyn, thank you for the kind words. I felt somewhat ridiculous posting my comment, but I thought my dog died of natural causes, and now I am not so sure. I saw others had also mentioned Alpo prime cuts, and I wanted to post my sweet guy's story so others using canned food might reconsider. Since my dog had lost a lot of his simple pleasures (because he was old) like taking long walks and following me when I was doing yard work, I decided to feed his what I considered to be decandent food as a treat to make each day special. I never feed him canned food when he was young because my vet said it was bad for his teeth. Now, I think we should all realize that it might look like food, but it is just a bunch of cheap, synthetic garbage not fit for any living creature. I am very aggravated at myself and these companies for creating canned poison. Alpo may not be on the list, but it sure is fishy that my dog had some of the same symptoms decribed on the news. That is why I keep checking these lists to see if Alpo has been included. I have two, sweet little boy rat terriers that used to have IAMS dry food which has now been replaced with homemade rice and chicken.

tereasa  says:

I know Pedigree is not on the recall list, but both our beagle and our lab started drinking alot and vomiting some. After I noticed the symptoms, I read about the recall. Today I called Menu foods; I asked if they make Pedigree. He asnwered with "Pedigree is safe." I asked again, "But do you make Pedigree?" and he answered, "There have been no problems with Pedigree." I said I disagreed and told him about our dogs. His manner got alot softer then, and he aked for our contact info and which food we were using. We're waiting for a call. I'll try again tomorrow. Meanwhile, our dogs are off all canned food. This is bigger than they are letting on. It took them many days to announce their recall even after they knew they had a problem.
There have been a couple lawsuits started; but the law considers an animal property, not family or anything, so the best you can get is reimbursed for your expenses (property damage), no pain and suffering or anything...and after the attorneys get their cut, well, the main thing you will have gotten is headache to add to heartache.
I also notice the news says over 100 brands are involved. Either this includes the cat food or they aren't posting all the brands. The Menu site was last updated the 16th and I have heard on the news that new brands have been added daily. Something is wrong somewhere (and it could of course be the news people, as usual). Be on the safe side: feed dogs real food if you can afford it.

I've been using Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice small bits formula and more recently Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice Lite small bits for my 4 year old lab/spaniel mix and I have seen no negative reaction; vomiting, diahrea, signs of kidney failure or dehydration. However, I'm still concerned about what brands can be trusted at this point and seriously considering switching her back to home made meals; chicken/rice with added vegetables, minerals & vitamins plus fish oil and omega 3 oils and brewers yeast until things settle down. Better to be on the safe side. I do know of others who are using the same brand for their dogs and they are doing fine.

I've never been to this site before, but was checking on "Cesar" brand dog food for my mom because she has both maltese and yorkie puppies who she fed that brand to in January. Both puppies got very sick immediately after they ate it and crashed...she saved them by giving them sugar water every half hour and dropperfuls of regular meat gerber stage 1 baby food mixed with a small amount of puppy formula and water. My little sister fed her yorkie puppy the Cesar brand the same week and he crashed as well, and the vet told her it was kidney failure...luckily my mom was able to save her puppy as well...Cesar brand dog food is BAD!! re: Mighy Dog Pouches

From Purina website

Voluntary recall

St. Louis, Missouri, March 16, 2007Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced that as a precautionary measure, it is voluntarily withdrawing its 5.3 ounce Mighty Dog® brand pouch products that were produced by Menu Foods, Inc. from December 3, 2006 through March 14, 2007. This withdrawal is in response to the recall initiated earlier today by Menu Foods, a contract manufacturer that does limited business with Purina as well as with other pet food manufacturers. Only Mighty Dog 5.3 ounce pouch products are being withdrawn by Nestlé Purina, including those pouches contained in multi-packs. Importantly, no Mighty Dog canned products, or any other Purina products are affected by Menu’s recall.

While Purina has no indication of any product quality or safety issues specifically related to our Mighty Dog pouch products, Purina is taking this proactive action out of an abundance of caution in response to the Menu Foods recall.

Consumers who have the indicated Mighty Dog 5.3 ounce pouch products should discontinue feeding them to their dogs and can receive the full replacement value of the withdrawn products by calling 1-800-551-7392.

The Mighty Dog pouch products and pouches in multi-pack cartons have code dates of 6337 through 7073, followed by the plant code 1798. This information should be checked on the bottom or back panel of the individual pouches. Specifically, if the code following the “Use By” date begins with four numbers from 6337 to 7073 followed by the plant code 1798, then the pouch is included in this voluntary withdrawal.

Purina regrets any inconvenience and apologizes for any concern caused by this product withdrawal. The Company will continue to take any and all actions necessary to ensure the quality and safety of our products.

Sorry if somone has answered this but does anyone have news about the kirkland brand of dry food sold by Costco? My 4-year-old dog has been eating this for a long time and is fine so far, but i just bought a new 40-lb bag. I can't find anything on costo's web site and no one human answers the phone. Thanks, and so so sorry for those of you whose pets are ill or departed.I think a after this I will just cook big batches of chicken and rice and freeze them for Oliver.

I was feeding my 3 cats Hills Science Diet prescription C/D dry food until about 2 weeks ago just before the wet food recall. One of my cats got all of the symptoms beinng noted, throwing up, lethargy, refusing to eat. I took him to the vet and tests were done, including xrays & blood work. They found his white blood cell count was off and couldn't explain why. Possibly IBS, but it was unusually for he had been eating this food for 2 years. I took him off the food and started giving him Figaro tuna, that's all he would eat. He stopped getting sick in a couple of days. I checked the website for this food and wheat gluten is in the dry too. I think I got a bad batch of contaiminated dry cat food. One of my other cats had severe diarrhea and lethary and the other one just wasn't himself. I don't care what how they are claiming it's only the specific wet foods, I think the dry stuff has been poisoned too. Luckily none of my pets have died.

I have an 11 year old Shih-tzu and a 3 month old Basset. My Shih-tzu has been on Pedigree literally her whole life and of course our Basset is on it now. I feel extremely lucky that neither one has gotten sick, but I'm scared of this happening. I know Pedigree is on the OK list, but there have been comments made about peoples pets becoming sick on Pedigree. I'm not really sure what to do. We can afford to feed them both food that I make, but I also don't want to give them a death sentence either. Someone please ease my mind and tell me I'm doing the right thing or how I can make sure to keep them healthy. I keep checking the Pedigree website to make sure there hasn't been any changes. And my heart goes out to those of you that have lost your loves. I do know that pets are not just property, but a part of the family and would be devistated to lose either one of mine.

Hi, Is Newmans organics Ok? They seem so careful I can't imagine they would be affected. They post guaranteed analysis too....... Also, My cats stopped eating Fancy feast -which is not on the recall list- around the same time as all this started, but before I knew about it. I couldn't figure out why they suddenly stopped eating the gravy foods. Lastly, what about the dry foods? I feed nutro dry, but I can't in good conscience anymore thinking somehow the poison made its way there. I want to switch to Newmans (even though my cats aren't crazy about it) so can anybody offer any advice?

Our Bernese Mountain Dog ONLY eats NUTRO Lamb and Rice for Sensitive Stomachs DRY FOOD, and we just got through $1000 of vet bills testing his blood, trying all sorts of antibiotics. He was urinating uncontrollably all over the house, had bloody diarrhea, and didn't want to eat for a few days before we took him in. THANK GOODNESS we did in time, and he is better now. I'm starting to think dry food is definitly affected too, and we should all feed our animals rice and chicken and veggies made by US from now on.

Dear all the people that have lost their loved ones,

I am constantly trying to see what is the latest update on the cat and dog food recall list. I think it is a bit ambiguous, because of the comments that I have read from forums. Some say that their cat had passed away from certain catfoods not listed.

I am not using any canned food or pouches, but had just purchased my friskies and 9 lives before I heard about the recalls. My normal staples have always been Purina and Whiska's dried catfood. My older cats only eat soft. Therefore, I have done this: I take a coffeecup of water-then I put the dried food on top of the water and wait for maybe and hour. Then, it is nice and soft so that they can chew it easier. I guess you could use a broth also. I am doing this--in trusting that Purina and Whiska's dried is safe, but sadly to say....I am not sure. (You can use any dried food to soften this way. I hope this helps. ) My condolences to all of you that are in mourning now for your loss. Our pets are so precious and innocent. It is certainly a tragedy.

thank you for listening, Joan

I swiched to feeding raw last December after years of terrible health problems for my dog. Thought we would lose her last year from complications of allergen related skin problems. She was on a series of antibiotics and steroids and her skin continued to deteriorate and get black spots. After just a couple months feeding raw, her skin is intact again and her hair grew back. The health of BOTH of our dogs improved. I recommend checking this site for guidelines re same:

I just wanted to post that i lost my dog beaudroux the first of december to similar circumstances. Unfortunately we fed him Alpo prime cuts in gravy from the can. I know that it is not on the recall list, but he was an healthy almost 4 year old ausssie who i hate to say would constantly refuse his canned food, but not home cooked, then he lost his appetite and had low energy...we took him to the vet on a wendesday, his temperature was high, and his blood test was a bit off, he also lost control of his bladder twice in the last week, then we found him that saturday night, laying dead in front of his doghouse, no sign of trauma or loss of fluids...it has been heartwrenching, especially with all the talk of recalls, i think his food might have played a roll...i still have a few cans, does anyone know of a source that might need to test them...for what's its worth

This is all anecdotal: I fed my dog, from a brand new bag of Pedigree dry dog food, Thursday morning; he got facial swelling, threw up, became lethargic; this lasted all day Thursday, yesterday (Friday), and this morning he threw up again. I gave him some yogurt and boiled chicken and he is much better now -- he has been drinking water, too. I am throwing this bag of food away. I am going to feed him boiled chicken and yogurt for awhile.

If anyone has any recipes for homemade food, please let us know.

My deepest sympathies to those who have lost a pet.

ALPO Making dogs sick---I have a licensed rescue and two dogs that belong to my dad are/were eating ALPO Prime Cuts. They are both in kidney failure. They are the only dogs that eat wet food. I have been on several lists and have been getting e-mails. ALPO is NOT on the List but STOP feeding the wet food to any dogs. It also has wheat gluten in it. The website is emphatic that is safe but I am 100% sure that is what caused sickness in my babies. If this has happened to you please e-mail me at sharonpate@yahoo.com

Joan  says:

Dear people who love their pets as much as I do,

If any of you have lost your precious 'children' --pets------I am so sorry. I am still very confused about the dry food. I did post a few days ago that was mixing my dry food with water and let sit so that it got soft for the older cats to eat. Now, I still am not positive if the dry food is safe. Especially, when I read comments posted. Some people say that the animal only ate dry food.

I then bought cans of human tuna and chiken to supplement their food intake. Maybe, I should buy baby food as many commentors have suggested. (I almost feel like I am starving my cats out of the ambiguity of this entire recall.)

I hope this gets resolved and remains as a top priority to inform the public honestly and as fast as possible--about the depth of this problem....and keep updating the list stat.

Sincerely,

Joan-

Our dogs and cats are carnivores. They are meant to eat raw muscle/organ/meat and raw bones. Grains and dairy and root vegetables and fruits that are not normally consumed in the wild prey diet can cause allergen problems and other illnesses. Cooked food destroys the enzymes they need to really digest and utilize their foods properly.

It is simple: Give your dog 10 % organ meat (chicken liver and gizzards and beef liver are inexpensive) and the rest should be muscle meat w/bone(chicken thigh and leg joints are good choices) NEVER COOKED . Feed them human grade meat...what you would eat. Their digestive systems are different than humans so ecoli, salmonella etc...is not an issue for them. The bone is soft enough when it is raw that it is not a problem for dogs and cats who are healthy. Some people who do not trust bone, give them the muscle meat and organ meat and supplement by giving 900 mgs of calcium per pound of meat fed. They don't need veggies...look at their poop after they eat a carrot...it will come out mostly intact. Sure they like to eat other things, just like humans like to eat transfats and chips and cake. In the wild, dogs and cats would kill their prey, eat the muscle/bone/skin/fat/organs and get some wild grasses or predigested veggies in the stomach contents of their prey animal. Some raw fooders (sarf for species appropriate raw food) do feed their dogs pulverized in the chopper raw veggies but root veggies, anything they wouldn't get for themselves if eating prey are not used. They don't have the same enzymes we humans have for digesting grains, dairy, veggies and fruit.

Never feed weight bearing bones from large animals as they are too hard on the teeth and NEVER cook bones because they can splinter and hurt the dog. Bones are necessary for minerals. Organs are necessary for vitamins. If the dog eats too much bone, he will be constipated so feed more organ or muscle and it will loosen him up (or raw egg)

Check the sites I posted earlier for more details or if you have questions and concerns re parasites, etc...they will give you thorough info. Whole Dog Forum and the articles section on B-Naturals are helpful sites where I've learned a lot from the normal pet owners and also breeders who have fed this way for years....healthier and happier dogs are my exp and theirs. No horror stories from people who actually do this and know what its like....Follow simple guidelines and its not complicated and can fit into your budget.

ex: Mon & Tues....raw whole chicken leg and thigh joints w/a side of raw chicken liver and kidney (large pieces of meaty bones are best so your dog doesn't try and gulp it down, but gnaws on it and takes his time...the bone is digested in his stomach so he doesn't have to chew it thoroughly before swallowing) In our area, leg and thigh joints can be found anywhere from 29 cents a pound to 79 cents a pound. My 48 pound dogs typically each eat one joint a day along w/raw liver/kidney and or gizzards.

Wed & Thurs....raw fatty ground beef w/10% ground beef liver (the bones on the other days balances this out, or give 900 mg of calcium per pound fed) I mix this w/warm water so its a little "stewy" and can't be gulped quickly. When my dogs gulps food down it comes back up pretty quickly! My dogs eat about a pound of this each on their beef days, although every dog is diff depending on activity level.

Fri & Sat....raw meaty pork ribs and 10% pork kidney or liver. Serve a good sized slab of the pork ribs so they need to work on it and don't just try and gulp it down. I've found one of our dogs is a gulper and needs the liver or kidneys to be cut into smaller pieces or pulverized in my electric chopper or he throws it back up.

Sunday....day of rest. Many raw fooders give them a day off of food, just like they would occassionaly miss a meal in the wild to let their digestive system rest. etc...one of my dogs will only eat raw chicken if I skin it and hold one end in my hand till he gets the hang of it...also he's the "gulper" so I hold onto till he's mostly through. His favorite meal is the ground beef and liver. Our other dog loves her food and has had no problem digging in to whole pieces. As long as you feed the bone meals every other day or every couple of days, and be sure your dog gets the organ meats they will be in good shape. Some recommend giving salmon oil capsules to make up for the EFAs not found in commercially farmed (non grazing) animals but some have found that is not really necessary to give ANY supplements as this is a nutritionally dense and superior way to feed.

The health of both of our dogs has improved dramatically! I'll see you on the Whole Dog Forum as "Flowergirl" if you pop in to surf or ask questions. http://www.wholedogforums.com Hope this helps somebody out there! Terry ...Bootsie and Ida's Mom

We had to euthanize our lab Blackie yesterday morning. His kidnesy could nto be saved and he was starting to have ulcers in his mouth and losing all control over his bladder and bowels etc. If I can prove that Menu Foods killed my dog, our family member and dear friend, I will do anything and everything in my power to have them all put in prison. If they knew anything, and ignored or proceeded to put these foods on the shelves, I and others will push until we can push no more. The least that should happen to them is that they are put completely out of business. I have had a strong feeling that Menu Foods has continued lying about what foods might possibly be tainted. I very seldom gave Blackie much can food, but since he has gotten older and has had some back problems, he had been very picky about what he ate. So we gave him some canned foods, O'Roy and Pedigree, but only a little in his dry food. Two weeks ago, I gave him canned food 2 days in a row (a full can) each day, he threw up twice, and then had some blood in his stools. I thought he had worms, because several months ago, he had had some bleeding (no throwing up though) and diarrhea. And when I took his stool sample and he had two kinds of worms, was treated for them, then the bleeding stopped. So, I thought he had worms again, except I did wonder why he had not thrown up before. but was this time. I took a stool sample in to a local retired veternarian and found out that he did not have worms. The following morning I took him in to the vet again, and he did blood work and found him to be in kidney failure. I let him keep him and try to flush his kidneys out, since this can help sometimes. They re-did his bloodwork again after 5 days of flushing, and they had not gone down significantly. So, after much anguish and guilt (after finding out that some of the dog foods were poisoned), we went to love him a little while longer, before giving the verternarian permission to euthanize our baby. We were all with him, my self, my husband and my daughter (he was her dog since she was 6). My eyes are swollen and I really can't talk about it yet without bursting into tears, he was such a huge part of our lives. Our two cats miss him also. He was a very special friend and will be greatly missed. I am sorry for everyone's losses, but do not want to let these people get away with this, and make other pets and owners suffer. The pet food industry is a huge one, and to let another big business get away with murder (which is what this is, whether the courts say so or not), such as chemical companies and others who have over the years killed or made gravely ill, people and animals by disposing of toxic wastes that cause cancer and other horrible illnesses. Everyone has to make their own choices but when will enough be enough? Sometimes other people choices and freedoms infringe upon our. Sometimes we have to take a stand. Who says that we can't sue for pain and suffering and win? It's not about the money for those of us who have lost beloved pets, but you better beleive that its about the mony for the pet food companies. I mean seriously, do you really think they care so much about out pets? There may be a few people who work for these companies who do care, but for the most part its just a business, making huge profits? Do we really kow what is in any of these pet foods? For that matter, do we really know what is in many canned foods we buy and eat, or feed to our children? Someone should be held accountable, and if we don't all push together and say that we won't take it anymore. Then who will? Do not throw away any suspect, keep it for evidence. If enough people yell, people will have to listen. And if you have to get down to politics (which I am not so fond of lately), those running will be MORE likely to listen to us and to hear our cries.

Don't bother typing negative comments to this because you can agree or disagree, that's your choice. But I won't reply because frankly at the moment I don't care about anyone on here except those who have pets who are sick or have died, and are suffering and mourning the same as myself and the rest of my family. When I have my food cans tested/and/or dry food (which were NOT on the recall list) and have conclusive evidence that they did contain the poison also---then---you will hear my voice again---and it will be loud.

It's on the web that the new source of the wheat gluten was newly sourced from china. Probably to cut cost, cheaper labor with lesser quality controls. My guess is they had a rat problem eating the wheat in the warehouse or in the fields. They might of sprayed it with aminopterin so the rats wouldn't cut into their profits. Wouldn't surprise me that it's legal to use it over there.

For now they will have to have hamburger and rice. My vet told me to start him off on chicken and rice and over several months and years finally found the combination of food that he can eat. I use boiled chicken tenders, pinto beans, white potato's and white rice. If anyone needs more information on how to cook it send me a message. He maintains a steady weight of 19 to 20 lbs.

Federal testing of recalled pet foods turned up a chemical used to make plastics but failed to confirm the presence of a cancer drug made to use rat poison (found in other pet foods) The recall expanded Friday to include the first dry pet food. The FDA said Friday it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet foods involved in the original recall and in imported wheat gluten used as an ingredient in the company's wet products.Cornell University scientists also found melamine in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating some of the recalled food. Meanwhile Hill's Pet Nutrition recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry Cat Food. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used. The recal didn't involve any other Prescription Diet or Science Diet products (SO FAR) said the company, a division of Colgate-Palmolive.

My beloved dog Marco died on March 12...he was 8 years old. He was fine on Saturday...then it all changed on Sunday. He became lethargic and wouldn't eat...it got bad so quickly that he couldn't even stand up after just a couple of hours of appearing lethargic. I had to get my neighbor to help me carry him to the car to take him to the emergency vet. They did emergency surgery to try to save him...but they couldn't. The vet said it was his liver...totally involved in tumors that erupted and they could not stop the bleeding or save his liver. I know all the talk has been about kidney failure..I just wonder if there are any other illnesses as a result of this poisonous food. Marco was full of life one day and gone the next. I am still devastated....and feel so guilty that I may have killed him by feeding him Pedigree pouches mixed in with his dry food. Kristi

None of Nutro's dry dog foods are on the list. None of Nutro's dry dog food uses wheat glutean or is manufactured by Menu Foods according to their website www.nutroproducts.com . All of their dry food ingrediants are purchased from the US.

This is what my dogs eat and I have not had any problems whatsoever.

I really wonder how long this has been going on? I had a beautiful, beloved Tom cat for eight years. He always seemed healthy. Three years ago he was diagnosed with Luekemia. With veterinarian care and a lot of love, he was still doing well. In September 2006, he started loosing his appetite, so I started buying all different kinds of canned food, baby food, anything trying to entice him to eat. We finally lost the battle on October 23, 2006. I have no way of knowing if it was the luekemia or something else that took him. I still have three loving dogs and am really concerned about feeding them!

Last year it was Diamond ... this year Menu (and a few others). Do what your ancestors did ... feed the animals home-prepared food. The cause of the problems aren't the food companies (human or pet) ... the problem is US ... we are too lazy to "make from scratch" ... want everything nicely canned, boxed, bagged ... and INSTANT.

I fed my adult Yorkie Pedigree cuts in sauce when I first got her in Jan and she didn't like it and had a gel like diahrrea, I immediately stopped.  With research I found this great scientist who worked in the dog vitamin supplement industry who found that each breed's nutritional needs were very different.  He has books with recipes on each breed, now mind you, they are really complete and are equivalent to a human type casserole recipe with lots of NATURAL supplements and real beef and vegetables as well as vitamins.  He found that the supplements for a St. Bernard caused nutritional distress in Dalmations.  This began his research into breed specific foods, just as not all foods are good for all people, so it is with different breeds of animals. You cook up a weeks worth of food and freeze and thaw out, it's actually pretty easy.  Please see his website at www.wdcusick.com, my dog loves this food but more importantly, it's safe for your pet.

I feed only Pedigree Large Breed dry food. 2 weeks ago my hound became lethargic and went off his food. Immediately to the vet and on antibiotics. We thought it was tick fever as he had recently got into ticks. Kept going downhil,(all the while I was still making him eat Pedigree by pouring gravy over it.) 13 days later he started having seizures and was put down. That same day another dog, same symptoms off to the vet. Had blood work done and it is her kidneys and liver. She is still going downhill. They are outside dogs on the farm but I have checked everywhere to find what they could've gotten into and came up empty. The Pedigree food I feed has wheat gluten listed as an ingredient and that seems to coincidental to me. Just wanted others to know in case you feed the same food.

Aobut 6 months ago, both of my Shelties got very sick--vomiting, dehydrated, diarrhea. Vet could find not cause but strongly suspected it was from something they had eaten. Both ended up on IV's for fluids and antibiotics as a precaution even thought there was no indication of bacterial infection or virus. All they had been fed was dry dog food--Nutro Max. I sent Nutro a sample of the food and they tested it and said it was fine. A few weeks later, I bought a bag of Nutro (different dry forumula) in which about half the pieces had a green coating. I returned the food. I'll never us anything bearing the Nutro name again.l

ulcers in her mouth, limped, wouldn't walk, acted like her stomach hurt, her gums were not responding

pink when touched by the vet, no fever. She was very listless, sick and wouldn't eat. I had purchased

a new sack of Nutro Max on March 22nd. The Vet hospital kept her overnight, gave her IV's, antibiotics

and X-Rays -- couldn't find the reason for her illness. I thought it might be because she ate some

leftover steak, but now I'm worried that it was the dry dogfood. She seems OK now, but after reading

these posts, I'm going to check her gum color again and call the vet.

My heart goes out to all who have lost a beloved pet. I am having a hard time finding information on a new food line put out by KMart called "CHAMPION BREED". We were staying at a hotel a couple of weeks ago and the hotel provided some Champion Breed Dog Biscuits, which I gave about 2 of them to my dog Dusty, a pomeranian, 20 lbs. and 3 years old. Has anyone heard of this brand, and know anything about it? It is not on the recall list, but that doesn't seem to mean anything. Also, we went to visit my mom and Dusty consumed some of her cat's food -- Friskies canned ocean fish, Friskies dry and Meow Mix. I know none of these are on the list, but I am still worried. Dusty has been drinking more water than usual, though we did just return Saturday from a long 3-day car trip. His stools have been softer than usual the last couple weeks, but not diarrhea. I am hoping it was the travel and stress related to that. Blessings to all, Terry

I had fed my chihuahua Iams dry food. Sick for 5 days now with diarehha, temperature, dehydration. Took to vet today. I not sure they know either. I just know NO MORE commercial dog/cat food for me. I have always fed my Pomeranian Beneful and Ceasar dog food. Four weeks ago, just before the pet food recall, she had severe diarrhea and vomiting for a couple of days. She was hiding and sleeping in strange places. I took her to the vet and after xrays and other exams plus over $400, he could not diagnose the problem. It is strange these two brands aren't on the recall list, but caused the illness in my dog. When I have tried to give her either of the two since then, she pushes her dish until it turns over. Obviously she knows something is wrong with it. I am now feeding her human food such as sliced turkey and beef for human consumption. No more dog food for my dog. Now if she goes, it will be the same thing that kills me. WHERE ARE THE CLASS ACTION LAWYERS??????
May God bless all who have lost their animal companions.

i POSTED A NOTE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO ABOUT MY DOGS, A SHIH-TZU AND BASSET-MIX. MY SHIH-TZU, CHELSIE, HAS BEEN ON PEDIGREE LITERALLY HER WHOLE LIFE (11 YEARS) AND MY BASSET-MIX, GRACE, HAS BEEN ON PEDIGREE FOR 4 WEEKS NOW. SHE'S 3 MONTHS OLD. LAST NITE GRACE STARTED THROWING UP AND DIDN'T WANT ANYHTING TO DO WITH HER FOOD OR WATER. SHE'S VERY LETHARGIC. I TOOK HER TO THE VET THIS MORNING AND THEY DAY BOARDED HER. THE VET TOLD ME OVER THE PHONE THAT HER BLOODWORK WAS NORMAL, BUT WHEN I WENT TO PICK HER UP THIS AFTERNOON, THEY SHOWED ME THE LAB RESULTS, AND HER POTASSIUM IS HIGH. I ASKED THE DR. WHAT COULD CAUSE THIS AND MY HEART FELL WHEN SHE TOLD ME IT COULD BE HER KIDNEYS, BUT SHE THINKS IT IS JUST THEIR MACHINE. SHE SAID SHE COULD SEND IT OUT TO AN OUTSIDE LAB BUT WANTED TO WAIT TIL GRACE GOT TO FEELING BETTER BEFORE SHE STUCK HER AGAIN. I NOW KNOW I SHOULD HAVE DEMANDED HER TO DO IT THEN, BUT AT THAT TIME I WAS JUST SO GLAD TO GET MY BABY HOME. THE DR. DIDN'T SEEM VERY OPEN TO TALK ABOUT THE PET FOOD ISSUE AND THOUGHT SINCE GRACE WAS JUST A PUPPY THAT IT WAS JUST SOMETHING SHE ATE. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE WHO HAS HAD TROUBLE WITH THEIR BABIES WHAT THEIR LABWORK SHOWED. WAS A HIGH POTASSIUM LEVEL THE BEGINNINGS OF TROUBLE YET TO COME. I THINK I'M GOING TO SWITCH VETS AND HAVE GRACE'S BLOOD DRAWN AGAIN TOMORROW AND TESTED. BY THE WAY, WE HAVE NOW STOPPED FEEDING OUR DOGS PEDIGREE AND I THINK I'M GOING TO TRY MAKING THEIR FOOD. WE'RE IN A FINANCIAL PINCH, BUT WHEN THIS HAPPEN TO ME THIS MORNING, IT OPENED MY EYES. SOMEONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THE ELEVATED POTASSIUM IS A SIGN THAT HAS BEEN SEEN IN BLOODWORK. UNFORTUNATELY I CAN'T SEEM TO OPEN MY VET UP FOR QUESTIONING. THANKS AND MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN THROUGFH AND ARE GOING THROUGH THIS.

To #146,        Why would you still feed your dog pedigree? I've only skimmed through some of these blogs  (and on other web sites) to find that people are noticing  a problem with their dogs after feeding pedigree.   I too was feeding pedigree and it worries me, luckily a month ago I changed to Newmans Own organics.   Now to be even safer I'm cooking for my dogs because if you wait to hear about another recall it may  be too late. I'm sorry to sound harsh but everything has still not been clear. Good luck to you and all  the pet owners.

Before I heard anything about medical problems I noticed that one of my three dogs had begun to selectively eat the yellow pieces out of the Pedigree dogfood and leave the dark brown bits uneaten. I attributed his behavior to a preference for the taste. Then I noticed that my second dog was doing the same thing. Finally, my third dog started doing it. By this time I was aware that other brands were being recalled. It was about the time I heard about the lady who got sick by trying to eat the canned dog food she had been buying to show her dog it was really o.k. to eat that I started thinking maybe my dogs can smell something in the dog food that I can't smell. I haven't noticed them acting ill, but I have been trying to find some substitutes. Trouble is, anything commercial might have the same problem. I can understand why vets would be unwilling to say anything more than, "Can't be sure what is safe yet."

I am writing this as concern to a food that is NOT listed on the current recall list. It is unknown to me whether or not Purina Moist & Meaty is produced by Menu Foods and I have had no luck trying to reach either of them. Last week my 3 year old Chihuahua was acting strange, as well as vomiting, and not eating. After taking her into the vet, I was informed that she was very near kidney failure. I was told that her kidneys were 75% not functioning, and her levels were 140, when normal ranges from 6-20. After 5 days of hospitalization she was finally sent home. The vet was unable to give me reason to what had caused this. I was also told that it is very rare for such a young dog to experience kidney problems like this.I now come to hear of these pet food recalls which are causing kidney failure. Due to the fact that all the products on this list are either canned or pouched foods, my concern has grown that this product should immediately be looked into further, in order to confirm whether or not it could have been the cause of the problem with my dog. If this product is toxic and not safe, pet owners should be notified as soon as possible. UPDATE: My dog got sick from Purina moist & meaty, was fine for 3 weeks eating Prescription Diet K/D recommended by the vet, Last night she started vomiting again! She is back at the vet again, having tests done & being flushed with fluids...With either food being on the list, what other foods are you feeding your pets that BELONG on the list. Vets have anonymously stated that preparing homemade meals for you pet is very very wise until all of this is figured out.

Ok, I am getting a bit nervous. I feed my 3 dogs Pedigree dry food. I havent noticed any illness in either of my dogs, but after reading this, I am scared to feed them this food, and quite frankly dont know what foods I can feed them other than what I cook for them in my own kitchen. I called Pedigree and they have a recording that assures consumers that their product is safe for pets and that they do not have any of this melamine in their products, but I was unable to talk to a representative due to their lines being busy, said to call back later or tomorrow. I guess until all of this is figured out I will be feeding my dogs my own food and/or finding recipes for making dog food myself. I heart goes out to all of those who have lost their friends or their friends are sick due to this unfortunate mishap.

I have a question: How long til the dogs get sick who had the bad food? I have a lab who eats a lot, and about a month ago she had one of the recalled food.

Currently she is on Pedigree Large Breed, because even though she's only 1 yr old, she's showing signs of hip problems, and Pedigree Large Breed is supposed to help with joint health.

I had a sheltie who died at the very end of August last year. I have no idea what he had been eatting at the time--I chalked his death up to old age--he was 15. But it was strange. He was foaming at the mouth, puking, peeing all around, stumbling looking scared and confused/disoriented, went outside, walked around trying to find a place to curl up and die...finally stumbled up the stairs laid infront of the fan and died. But that was too long ago for me to know what he had ate. Maybe it was a stroke?

I think my Aurora will get chicken and rice and beef for a couple weeks at least. And then, if I buy dog food I might go with this one that is packaged locally...i think it's called eagle or something, and it's made from human grade food supplies...

and now they are recalling dog treats...ol' roy recalled a bunch of treats...and my dog had been getting the buiscuits, though they aren't on the list, we got rid of all that we had. http://www.delmonte.com/petfoodrecall.html

Becky  says:

Aurora is eatting her first batch of home made rice and chicken.

I'm almost positive that what I was feeding her before is safe--but then again we pour food into a big tub, and there are more than one kind of food in there, and I don't know what the other ones are. I had thought dry food was going to be safe, but now I'm not so sure.

I am also wondering if this is what happened to my pug. Last February (2006) he died suddenly. It was also kidney failure that he had. He had been having problems but was eating food I had specially mixed up for him eg cottage cheese, eggs, rice etc but the odd time I gave him some canned dog food. He was doing so good and gaining weight then suddenly started wandering, stumbling around, puking and peeing then died. Now I am wondering if it was the pet food and this was a while back.

I am so worried about my min pin, she is only 2 years old (and has always had a clean bill of health), but the last couple of weeks she has been having greenish foamy vomit and diarreah with mucous. Today she has vomited 6 times and now I am very alarmed. I usually feed her Iams dry food mixed with about 1/5 of a pouch of Pedigree Little Champions (so I thought I had made a safe choice). I thought maybe she had a doggy flu of some sort (which I thought would pass), but now I am afraid I have been unknowingly and unintentionally poisoning her. It might be a coincidence, but it seems very strange that this has happend during the recall period of other dog foods.

Joan  says:

Hello,

Since the recall, I have been noticing that I am more conscientious about reading labels on everything that I purchase. I think that most of us seem to take for granted that our products on the market are tested thoroughly, and clinically sound. That is not the case.

Pets in general are very finicky about what they eat. Atleast my pets are. It is not easy to feed them what they are not use to. The same goes with children. It is sometimes difficult to make sure that they get the proper nutrition that they really need.

I do not trust companies in general as much as I use to. I am glad that I am a proud independent distributor of Shaklee products, which I know for sure that they are safe, pure, and tested thoroughly for sound quality... for health of you, children, home, and mother earth.

The chemicals and toxins that are found in nature-also hurt our animals and our children.

And, our cats and dogs are our 'children', too.

I hope that we can join together to prevent this type of negligence -with testing and research (about products--animals or humans )--to never happen again! We as consumers deserve the purest products that can be offered. Our cats and dogs, our children, and our mother earth - deserve the respect of honest, truthful research on what is being offered for use or consumption.

So far, I have not lost a pet, but they are disturbed by not getting their canned food or packets that they are use to. (I tried the human food for awhile, but who can afford to keep cooking chiken and roast for one's pets. I did buy tuna and canned chiken -also.)

For my older animals that cannot eat dry food, I soften the dry with water first.

I sympathize very much with all of you that have lost your animal. I was just thinking today as I fed my older cat--by hand..What if I am force feeding poisonous food? How horrible would I feel? That has happened with some people that lost their pet from what I have read on forums.

I feel confident, though, when I provide my grandchild her daily vitamin that I distribute with my iseepure products(pure nutrition). I also feel that I can totally trust the multivitamins that I take for over 50 (baby boomer). I enjoy sharing the fact that there are truly companies that adhere to the philosophy of 'love thy neighbor as thyself'--and are not so wrapped up in profit, the stock market, or other big business ventures...that they really care sincerely about people and the planet.

Sincerely, Joan

Beneful. Its all she eats.Cassie, 65 lb German Shepherd/Lab mix. Two days ago the dog ate nothing. Yesterday 7am, woke up to four piles of vomit and what I thought was incredibly thin black diarrhea (blood turns out). Thinking she's ok left for work, my wife calls to say she's having a problem, so I come home. 11am the dog squats and a STREAM of blood come out. 1/2 - 3/4 cup at least. Went to the vet immediately. Of course, she was dehydrated. Hemocrit was way down due to bleeding and clotting was bad (12-17 normal, she's over 100) They put her on IV fluids, and her bloodwork is improving. I'll be taking her home this afternoon and watching like a hawk.

In retrospect, she vomited a few times about two weeks; it had grass in it so I wasn't very worried. And she's been wanting to go outside very frequently, though I'm not sure its more more frequently urination - "hey, let's watch the dog pee?" - figured it was just because its warming up and she can't decide where she wants to be.

Vet thinks its rat poison. No idea where she could have gotten it – I don’t have anything like that around. I really hope it’s not the Beneful because its not on the list (which is why I was still feeding it to her). If it is Beneful, there's gonna be a lot more dead pets out there.

I've been feeding my 7 yr old lab Trixie with Pedigree for the past 3 years. She has always been extremely healthy and active. Suddenly last month, she started to have internal bleeding. We took her to the vet for emergency surgery. They removed her spleen and after $4,000 of vet invoices, she's back to normal and in terrific condition. I've been feeding her Science Diet Senior Wet Food, she's doing great. Do yourself a favor and mostly, your loved animal a favor: STAY AWAY FROM PEDIGREE. It's a scandal that they are not on the recall list. I can guarantee you that they also had some of that nasty chemical in their food and that they're trying to get away with it. Once again: STAY AWAY FROM PEDIGREE. I hope this is clear enough and will help save some pet lives.

I recently switched to wet Alpo Chophouse and both dogs had severe diarrhea and vomiting. Is this from the dry, wet or what? I am so confused as to what is causing this. And someone said don't feed the treat canine carry outs, which I give my dogs. I did not have a problem with the wet ALPO prime cuts, although this is now on the recall list. But the chophouse i just started and with that both dogs are sick. I have to assume it is the wet Alpo Chophouse cans. But could it be a delayed reaction from the dry Pedigree/Nutro food?

Make it simple. Check wet, dry or what ever you are feeding for corn, wheat, soy, gluten and animal digest. These items are TOXIC to dogs and cats. Most of the pet foods on the shelves are loaded with this stuff and it is killing our pets. I don't care if the pet food companies say it is tainted this and that. This statement simply is NOT true. Look for the grains and the manure. Don't feed those and you should be alright.

To post 118. Alex stop with the Alpo!!! Our 17 mth. old Great Dane female Stella, laid down and died Jan. 18th. Purina One large breed dry and Alpo wet mixed. Our 11 yr. old was on a diet and was spared. Stella had all of the symptoms but due to her size they weren't as bad as most posted here but all symptoms were present and we just didn't get it. Her eyes were what bothered me, the inner membranes came up above her lower lids but she seemed fine except for laying down at suppertime. Being a Dane I took her lethargy during the day as her entrance into becoming a well mannered teen. Not until the food was recalled did all of the pieces fit. Her brother is our son's dog who lives across the street, he was on Pedigree and thankfully is doing well. Stopped with that too as it has wheat gluten. The kicker is that our old girl was so despondent over the death of "her" pup we brought home an 8 wk. old male Dane two days later, we were afraid we'd lose her too.......Guess what we were feeding him!!! Stella's food, the recall on the Alpo hadn't come out yet. We started poisoning him too!! Then guess what we put him on? Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance. Twice this week he refused to eat his supper but was fine with his Bil-Jac dry in the morning, so... today I check the recall and here we go again. Natural Balance Venison and brown rice. His eyes started looking odd a few days ago and the light bulb finally went off. I don't know with the other poor dogs who have been affected but with two dane's and the weird membrane thing happening in the eyes, whatever you feed your Dane's keep a close eye on their eyes, no pun intended. Our Stella's eyes will haunt me forever, I just didn't get what she was telling us. Wheat gluten, brown rice and foreign manufacturers. Beware. This is crazy bad. Oh, our 7 yr. old cat Predator was hit and killed in front of our house, something he didn't do...cross the street...but he did and he looked as if he were in a trance the week Stella died. Everyone missed her badly, thought he was just "out of sorts" due to her death. He liked her. When Stella didn't eat her food, he did . after eating his own. Lost two pets in a 6 day period and it still isn't over. It's been horrible and mind numbing to say the least. Try to be diligent don't be too careful. Read all the packaging or make your own. Good luck and God Bless to all in this nightmare.

My heart goes out to all who have lost their best friend, their baby, their companions. Critters are wonderful. Our babies look to us to take care of them and we do our best. This recall has me scared. I have 9 Chihuahua's ( takes at least 18 to make a real dog! I have always had big dogs before now.) Every day new foods are being added to the recall list. I have been feeding a Walmart brand Maxximun adult/senior lamb and rice dry food for 6 years, never had a problem-so far it still seems good. I however do not feel safe feeding any processed dry or can food. I bought some all natural dry foods-yet see some of the wet foods by the same maker just now being recalled. I bought some Nutro natural choice and also Purina One senior dry. I am ready to say the heck with all manufactured foods , I will return both new bags of dry foods and start making home cooked chicken broth/chicken meat/rice and veggies. Good luck to everyone with your pups and kitties stay well all. REMEMBER if you must change your dogs food suddenly-it may take up to 3 days for them to eat also changing to a new food will most of the time -make the stomach upset and also give runny stools sometimes with blood in the stool-because lower tract is irritated, just because of the sudden change to the animals system (introducing a new food) it is best if you can to change food slowly like 1/2 bowl of old food and 1/2 bowl of new food mixed and keep adding a little more new food a little less old food until all new food. The recall is making this impossible in some cases. When in doubt go to the vet don't take a chance. I lost my last big dog a beautiful 4 year old 120 pound black lab to kidney failure- a neighbor poisoned him with anti-freeze-never could prove it but all the other neighbors believed this man was capable of this kind of terrible act. It was terrible Hash went from 120 to less than 60 lbs in a week-when they figured out it was anti-freeze poisoning(causes kidney failure) it was too late- we tried but he did't make it. I do not want to ever loose another animal to kidney failure . I am going to cook their food. My vet says fresh veggies are good for them-they also like bananas, oranges and a few will eat grapefruit, they like apples, love cucumbers, tomatoes, garlic,brocolli-califlower(may cause gas)NO GRAPES NO RAISINS (bad for kidneys)and onion I am told is not good for them. Mine have had cooked onion they have had no problem with onion but I need to check on that one a little more. My guys and girls are very healthy and happy and I pray to keep them that way-I think only by cooking for them at this point will they be safe. Good luck to all. If you have lost a pet my prayers are with you and I hope you get in the class action and sue the people in the wrong-may you get some type of compensation-nothing can replace the friend you have lost.

Response to #27 Christene

My mom just lost her 5yr old healthy Sheperd on April 11 due to kidney failure. She was feeding her Beneful. Buffy showed all the symptoms and died within 4 days. She spent two days in the vet with IVs. My mom also had Buffy's year check up just a month before this and everything was fine. I have been feeding my own dogs purina dog chow (dry) and now I am afraid something might happen to them. I am currently serching for a better food. At this point I dont care what it cost ..any recommendations?

A brand of dog food that I have been using and have seen great results from is an all natural dog food company called RED BANDANA. Not only is it all natural food but seems like it had turned my eight year old Rotti into a two year old puppy again. Great food . Just food for thought!

Susan- The Brand is called Red Bandanna . First spelling was a little off. I also reside in Georgia , just incase it is a locally sold brand or company. I don't beleive it is just sold in Georgia. Evey product they sell is home made from food to treats. Not sure if it is specifically for dogs . I think they make food for cats as well. We were told about this brand long before the dog food scare and have been using it ever since. Our Rotti loves the food and buscuits which have really helped her to become more of an active dog . Seems like her joints feel better as she plays more than she ever has before. Great food , Please research this and post a link for the company should the results come out ok. I beleive all natural food is the way to go Pet food scare or not. Thanks for the reponse and look forward to any future research results.

I have a 8 year old pit/bulldog mix. I have been feeding her Pedigree dried food. Recently on thursday i fed her alpo cans. But i didn't get her the Alpo cans prime cuts instead i got her Alpo chunky style. So far she still looks good and acting normal but i will be monitoring her. I got 2 questions hopefully someone will answer

1. Is the science diet dry food safe? I only know for sure they sell it in Petco. But is it safe?

2. If i choose to start feeding my dog homemade food, what can i feed her besides chicken and beef?

Im sorry for anyone who has lost a pet. May god bless you...

Science Diet dry is supposed to be safe. Realize the same stuff goes into the dry which they use in the wet. Science Diet is a very over priced so-so product. See the review.

Thank you for answering my question Asksusanpeters

Apparently, i went on my own little investigation at petco and i noticed that alot of the foods on the RECALL list don't have the 3 "bad" ingredients.

Is it because maybe they cleared those foods of those 3 potentiallly harmful ingredients? But if they did, why would they still be on the recall list. I noticed Mighty Dog, Iams, Natural Balance, and Eukanuba didn't have the 3 ingredients.

I also noticed that the foods that are NOT on the RECALL list do have 1 or the other of the bad ingredients.

I don't know what to think anymore.

The pet food makers use those igredients in differnt amounts, etc. These three items were not the cause of the recall. I'm saying these three ingredients are toxic to dogs and cats. The pet food makers shouldn't use them at all!

Did you know that recalled pet foods have been fed to pigs? Many are now being quarantined. I think the FDA should seize all food and drugs that are deemed unsafe because these companies are not trying to do the right thing by consumers. Personally, I'm cooking my dog's food and giving her vitamin supplements. I boil chicken livers or gizzards with some rice, peas, and scrambled eggs thrown in. Not expensive, doesn't take much time, healthy, SAFE, and she's loving it!

The Nutro website now has a form to complete regarding pet illness in the "Contact Us" section. I was not able to send my email and opted to call the 1-800 number. There is not a problem with their website, just an overload.

I was speaking to a fellow there, related my concerns with the dry dog food, and told to do the following:

1. send a sample of the food ( I only have a small ziploc bag, but will send only a portion of what I have)

2. also send correspondence, relating to symptoms, vet visits, diagnosis, treatment etc.

3. include vet bills, upc codes (very important apparently), diagnostic results, or anything else relevant.

4. request a followup from Nutro pending food test results.

Send all info to : Nutro Product Incorporated, Customer Service Department, 445 Wilson Way, City of Industry, CA. USA 91744.

Although Pedigree canned food hasn't been recalled, I noticed that it does contain "wheat gluten." My dog is a Rottie-mix who has recently had a touch-and-go appetite. The ASPCA has recommended whether your dog food has been recalled or not, the safest thing to do is to not feed your pet anything with wheat gluten in it.

My beloved 12 year old pit bull died on 3/31. He eats Pedigree wet mixed with Publix dry. He was on anti seizure meds for about a month and was doing very well. He was happy, healthy and active. He was fine on 3/30 and on 3/31 in the afternoon he started frothing at the mouth and pacing the yard and then he laid down and wouldn't get up and was bleeding from his mouth. He died that night. We are devastated. The vet said it sounds like a major heart attack, but reading all these posts, I'm not so sure.

My dog DIED. She was a diabetic, so this hit her hard. All the same symptoms. No energy, wouldn't eat or drink and the poops. . Took her and the rest of my mini schnauzers to the vet and she stayed. 5 days later, had to have her put to sleep and it broke my heart. The vet is not sure if it was the food, but, have taken her kidneys and sent to the pathologist for evaluation. The vet, doesn't think it was the food, except, then, one of my other dogs did the same thing. He is not diabetic and more active than she was. She was also blind from the diabetis. BUT, my other dog spent one night at the vets, on IV for dehydration and came home the next day. NOW, how can two dogs do the same thing inside of a week. I think its the food, and we should know the test results soon. I was feeding them Ol'Roy, country stew and chicken in gravy. But, not anymore. Making my own with boilded chicken breats and extremely well cooked hamburger. I am soooooooooooooooooooo very afraid of any dog food now. I miss my girl, she was different and special and it broke my heart to lose her.

If Menu foods is contacting claimants who are represented by counsel, they are handling claims in bad faith and this could bring punitive damages, on top of any monetary awards.

However, if Menu foods is contacting claimants who have not informed Menu of being represented by counsel, or their attorney has not contacted Menu, then Menu should receive a “release of all claims” in exchange for any payment made on the claim. This would indeed waive customers right to future claims, which is standard in most settlement agreements.

Keep in mind that this is a property damage claim. Therefore plaintiffs are not entitled to emotional distress, missed time from work, etc. By law, this claim is the same as having a windstorm rip the roof of your house. You may have it replaced or have it paid at actual cash value, depending upon your home policy.

I find it interesting that Menu lists the different “Class Action Attorney’s” on their website! Menu would rather you obtain a lawyer because the payout will be much less. And ofcourse, the lawyers will get all the money and the plaintiff’s will most likely not see a penney. Remeber the class action asbestos lawsuit years ago? Enough said….

Bottom line, if you can settle a claim with Menu directly, you will fare much better than participating in class action suit.

Continue to feed homecooked meals. Look into adding vitamins to the meals. I think only a fool would go from homemade back to commercial pet food with all the deaths which have been caused. Cook at home! At least until the pet food makers are made to provide a quality, healthy product for our pets.

Over the past couple of weeks i noticed that my dogs were being pickey and only eating the small squares and leaving the dark bits. Two days ago my two year old cocker boy went off his feed , became lethargic and before i could get him the vet he died the same day the other four will not touch the food it is pedigree! I called the company and as they have told everyone else there food is safe and not on the recall list I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IT IS SAFE they are just choosing not to tell us the truth. Why is it that Wellness will not tell anyone where the food is made? What do they have to hide? The sales people ask as if it is a national secret, why? Is it possible the food is made at ANI where most of the tainted food came. My locate PSP in Dallas was not helpful in finding out where it is made, of the source of the Rice Gluten. What does Wellness have to Hide? Seems we are having problems with the food and cannot get any help.

I also lost a pet and a few months later I lost his brother. We always fed them pedigree dry with a mix of pedigree wet canned food. We stayed away from the canned food for awhile after hearing of the recalls, but pedigree was never on the lists so we reintroduced the wet food and continued to feed them pedigree wet and dry. After losing two pets in such a short time I am scared to continue with any manufactured dog food. My first baby died of suddenly onset kidney failure and I had to watch him suffer with vomiting and diarrhea until he was gone. I just lost his brother a few weeks ago as well. Both happened so suddenly and neither one was having problems before. I'm afraid it was the pedigree there are no other answers for it. I want to know how do we get included in the class action suits? It just isn't fair that I'm without my babies I feel lost without them.

I've been feeding him Co-op Gold pet food (Beef Cuts/Gravy) And I wanted to know if that pet food was on the recall list? He has been having oozy-like diarreha and that worries me. I switched to Country Value dog food a couple days ago but I'm afraid I switched to late. I think he's dying but Im not sure could you please check for me? Thanks a Bunch!

I've also lost my best friends due to Pedigree, my 4 year old Rottie mix (Toby) Passed away months ago of Kidney failure. The vet told me "All we can do now is watch him die" And that hurt alot. Later on Toby's sister Kestra the Pitbull/Bulldog mix passed away also of Kidney failure. I did not want to watch her suffer the same way Toby did so I just put her down. She was 5 years older than Toby anyways. But I miss them both soooo much! Just last week I adopted my third dog Bullet the PitBull/Bulldog mix and I'm going to keep him on Country Value dog food so that I do not have to watch him suffer the same way Toby and Kestra did.

I wanted to know, is this whole issue with pet foods being recalled over? Like many pet owners, I've also lost my best friend due to tainted pet foods. But that was months ago so I was wondering if it was finally over and if people can move on with their lives without worrying about tainted pet foods.

Kimmy,

The most recent recall was in late July. No, this recall thing and pet food killing our pet issue is far from over. Just this week I have had over a 1/2 dozen of my clients call to let me know their dogs I usually groom have died from eating pet foods not even listed in the recalls. Looks like Purina is the cause of most and Science Diet the others which have called me this week.

I lost a completely healthy 7 yr old boarder collie on July 1st after purchasing a bag of Ol'Roy kibble and chunks (their version of kibble n bits) food. I normally shop at one location of this chain store, but was near a different one and decided to get my baby her food there. I purchased it on June 22nd & she was dead within the week. Her only symptom was a bit lazy and drinking a lot. We brushed it off as the heat. (it was a warm week)

Our other two dogs were not affected by it (thank god) & now our dogs get a strickly people food diet because my husband is still feel guilty for putting that food down for her.

Shame on these companies for taking away our family member & maybe the exec's of this company should be forced to watch my children tend to her grave daily because they certainly are not over the loss.

We've been feeding our jack russel alpo chop house originals. Two days ago, she started bleeding from the nose, so we took her to the vet and he believes that it was rat poisoning. However, we have no rat poisoning in the house and have never used the likes. I was curious if anyone has heard of dogs getting poisoned from Alpo chop house originals or purina dog chow dry food?

I just want to know for sure what I can feed my dogs. I was feeding them homemade food. Like baked/boiled chicken, and some meats. Then lately I switched to Blue Seal's Brandon Farms. But, it's a little bit pricey. PLUS, I am not liking the fact that the food is manufactured from Menu Foods. I did read above that you, Susan, recommend that feeding dogs homemade food is better. Should I go back to cooking chicken and other meats for my dogs? I tried mixing in veggies with it and rice, but they just pick out the chicken. What should I give them for the vitamins and nutrients that they'll need? Geez, I'm not even sure what to do and what to feed my dogs.

By the way, one of my dogs died on Feb. 5th, and we think it was the recalled food. He ate Alpo and Iams wet foods. The vet kept asking if he got into rat poisoning. So, yeah, we believe this issue has caused his death.

Thanks

Ya I fed my 6 year old Collie ALPO canned food but nothing has happend so far besides a bit of vomit last week. But my vet said that he is coming down with a flew and thats why she threw up. BTW you should ad ripleez to your safe list because if people live in canada and can't find any pet foods above ^^ then you should order from RIPLEEZ! They make their wn food on a farm and have no ingredients added that were used in the foods on the recall list. My 16 yaer old Shitzu used to eat Ripleez but then she died of old age so I switched to ALPO because every time my mom came to take my Collie and bring it to her place for the week-end she would always feed her Alpo and he seems to like ALPO more than the Ripleez.

PEDIGREE NOT SAFE! I switched my beagle shepard to pedigree after the recall, she was doing o.k. for awhile on it. Recently she became super picky about eating Pedigree little champions, and when she did she was throwing up all day with runny stools. No more, I am home cooking food, brown rice, canned chicken or ground beef, vegetables and an omega additive the vet told me about with flax seed called the Missing Link. How can we get involved in Pedigree law suit?

Each of my two dogs were VERY ill during the beginning of this year (2007). After which all the pet food recalls emerged. And like many others have said the vets suspected rat poisen, yet we don't use any nor could we find any around our house. I kept thinking the only thing they'd eaten had been their dog food, it had to be the food. However, since Purina Dog Chow was not on the recall list I figured it must have been something else they had gotten into. NOW a couple months later, and still only feeding Purina Dog Chow, my dogs are having vomiting episodes since purchasing the current bag of Dog Chow. Ziggy, I think you should read this (I do NOT want to start a fight but I think after reading your post you should have a look)

3 months BEFORE the great pet food scandal: Cookie my 6 year old Doodleman/ Pinscher was on Beneful. 2 weeks later he passes away of kidney failure.

2 months after recall: my new dog Flash the 3 month old Doxie Scot gets deathly sick and is rushed to ER. He is staying there now and might have to forever according to some nurses . (He was on Beneful too)

4 months later (still after ecall): I switched to Kibbles 'n' bits (bad Idea) and feed it to my new adopted 4 year old Olde English Bulldog Pepsi who gets sick but does not die and is NOT rushed to ER.

Now: Pepsi and Coco (the Otterhound) are both put on a strict balanced helathy (not to mention safe) dog food veggie diet. So Ziggy I am sorry to say that truly I think its Beneful I can't think of anything else it could be.

Where I shop for my pet foods, the only one they have that has not been recalled is Dad's pet food. I don't think it is a very good brand but Its better than Pedigree (which is what I used to feed my Bull Boxer) He really liked that stuff but one day I bought a bag of it and filled his bowl like I do every morning. When he finished eating his nose began to bleed. So I stoped feeding him that stuff. Just last week my 7 year old daughter got a puppy as a birthday gift. Her name is Power-Puff the Poo-shi. :)

Samantha  says:

Lissie,

Beneful is not safe. My brother fed it to his East European Shepherd (Blazer) and he began to throw up. His nose bled and then he started to limp. He was no older than 8 months (they live to be about 15 years and over) So he was NOT old. The only problem he EVER had was a skin rash and it stoped at 4 months. PLUS his vet check up was up to date and he was JUST fine before he ate the stuff.

And about the whole dispute on BENEFUL, i think it just depends on the dog. At first i fed my puppies beneful puppy mix and they were OK. After a while on teh food, one of them ocasionally threw up for no apparent reason. The other one was perfectly OK. Then i found out that the Beneful was probably causing the sickness and was told to use Hill's Science Diet for puppies and i went out and bought some. They've been on it for a few weeks and seem perfectly fine. I probably will change it though because of the grains. I'm thinking of how the other members of my houseold would feel about having to make homemade dog food. It seems by far the safest option.

Thanks Susan for the information. Does JD Moore make any other brands of dog-food that would be comprable to Comet? If not, can you recommend a brand that I might use? We need something inexpensive (we're feeding 3 dogs right now and we have an 11 month old baby -- I'm only a teacher and my husband and country pastor so income is minimal) -- We need something that will hold up to the energy our dogs exert. The Lab loves to retrieve (in the water and on land - and he runs constantly) and the Beagle - well he has a nose of his own and loves to swim and run too. The Blue healer we have is a stray that wandered up and we're feeding her got her shots and all that until we can get a good home for her. She doesn't do much activity but needs a good food. Thanks

I have been suggesting to my clients Maxximum Dog Food, available at Wal Mart. This is not the greatest food but it is the best that is available in our area. We live in a town with a population of 2500 so high dollar pet foods are out of the question.

I think the Maxximum runs around 12 -15 dollars for a 20 pound bag. Seems the dogs do well on the food and don't seem to require as large of a serving as with other foods.

Blessings to you,

I don't know what pet foods are available in your area so it is hard for me to tell you what you might try for a healthy choice in pet foods.  If you use my reviews to select a pet food be sure to get a 10/10 product.  http://hubpages.com/hub/Dog_Food_Review Please read the comments about the food, too.

What ever you choose to feed make sure it does not include corn, wheat, or soy.  These three grains will kill your hound.

Until these pet food companies are forced to provide accurate information about the contents of their pet foods it is hard to say for sure which pet foods are completely safe.

Do not feel bad that you were unaware of the pet food recall since the recall was just a big cover up for the real problem with pet foods. Dogs and Cats are poisoned by corn, wheat, and soy as well as other ingredients. The grains are most likely what killed your puppy.

My beagle Koopa has been on the hills prescription diet food for the longest time, and has been doing extremely well. We recently switched to eukanuba diet food, with a mix of store brand wet food. The wet food from the store started smelling oddly so we tossed it and opened and new can of pedigree country stew. Koopa normally eats his dry food with a mix of wet for dinner. Yet out of no where he's become so thirsty i have to refill his water bowl about every hour of two. He even threw up in the car three times *luckily we had a blanket to cover the seats...* Then just last night, he threw up once more, and is still extremely thirsty which also causes him to need to go outside quite often. I'm becoming very skeptical about both his wet, and dry food. Unfortunately i'm only doggie sitting Koopa for about another week, so my sister can't put him back to his old diet right now. (I'm also skeptical about his previous dry food. Hills scientific prescription diet food).

Susan, what do you suggest that i do for my dog, for the time being. He's definately not being himself. (We even went to the vet recently and he was fine, since we had his back checked out since he was having issues. Now that those issues are being resolved now he's having different issues right after. I'm very worried and dont' know exactly what i should do.

We have been using Pedigree for years but last the last few months our dogs have been getting diarrhea & have been all but refusing to eat Pedigree dry or wet products. Then the worst happened last Wednesday...after feeding our three year old Aussie....he began drinking more water than usual...then he had 2 seizures in a row immediately after ingesting his Pedigree food. He was a perfectly healthy dog until now.We have taken him to the doctor...he has run blood test & advised us that the seizures were not system or metabolic based...our vet has suggested it could be low levels of toxins...he has now advised us not to feed our dogs Pedigree any longer We were also informed this morning that some of the pet stores have been recalling Pedigree products....one being Pet's Mart....where we were buying Pedigree....but Pedigree website (Pedigree.com) as of tonight doesn't mention that recall at all...but Pet's Marts website doesThis scares us....the silence scares us....after years of using Pedigree, we will no longer continue to buy this product We are interested in doing something about the way dog food is made & sold...it's a same that our loving pets are being perpretrated by these companies. What can we do...how can we get involved?

BETTER FOODS TO FEED YOUR PETS AND WHYIf your dog has diarrhea mixing rice with their food and even some unflavored Metamucil helps to firm up stool. Pedigree is really not a very good food to begin with. Neither is IAMs Beneful Purina or any of the other foods you have usually heard of. The first several ingredients are usually corn (we know what happens when our body gets corn, we poop it out and don’t use it, same with dogs) meat by products (the take the meat off of whatever it is and you get the bones, feathers, coat, feet, beaks, etc) and white or brewers rice (no nutritional value, just a filler) because of this our dogs need to eat more to get the nutrients they need and poop a lot more too. Also…science diet and eukanuba are not very good foods either. They used to be but they were bought out by other companies who, to save money, changed the ingredients to fillers and by products. These foods cost about the same as the all naturals foods and you are getting pedigree quality food. You can check all the ingredients yourself. Stay away from the first 3 ingredients being corn, by products of any kind, and white or brewer’s rice. Go for foods with chicken, chicken meal, or any meats that don’t have by product after them, and BROWN rice. These are good foods. Try going to a specialty pet store and ask about a better food. Precise, Royal Canin, and Verus are all really good foods. When you look at the ingredients they will be along the lines of Chicken, brown rice (the only rice with nutritional value for dogs), and usually another protein source such as chicken meal (chicken meal is just dehydrated chicken, very good) your dogs will eat much less of the food so even though it cost a bit more you go through less food and it ends up saving you money. They also poop less, live longer, and are overall healthier. I have four shih tzus and I feed them Royal Canin dry food. 10lbs of that food last us over a month. 4 adults dogs eating only 10lbs of food between the 4 of them is pretty good! These foods are also all natural and organic so they are never involved in any recalls; you know your food is always safe. Go to your local pet store and ask about these brands (Precise, Royal Canin, Verus, Wellness, California Natural, Innova, Canidae, Merrik) many stores, such as Pets Plus, will even give you your money back for the dog food if your dog doesn’t like it and has programs such as buy 10 bags get your 11th free. It’s worth a try and trust me your dogs will love it.

It is very important to feed right food to your dog. A pet is like a child for the owner. Here is a useful link to help you choose right food for your dog.

MY Dog tasha was doing very well until she starting convulsing and foaming at the then fell to the ground and lost all her bouwls, she is 5 months and we took her to the emergency she had a fever of 107 and was slightly convulsing, she is fine now but was on her death bed, no changes at home just changed her dog food to diamond for puppy's, does anyone know if that it could be the dog food, the vet treated it as if was a toxin, all her blood work came back normal.?

4 months ago I asked why EVO was deleted and changed to Natural Instinct. My RaTerrier got the runs off/on and was not happy. Went back to EVO and he got a rash and also gets soft stools now. Was looking around recently and am choosing to go with Petcurean NOW because it's Grain FREE and Meal FREE. Also it's a Canadian Co. and hopefully our States of USA could offer a similar product very soon.

Here's some info that I thought we should reiterate:

Thought this might help people really understand. Anything "meal" is still not good!!! Its better than by-products but i still NEVER feed anything that contains animal meal to my pets. I hope this helps others: Chicken meal From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Chicken meal is a commonly-used ingredient in pet foods. It is defined by the AAFCO as "the dry rendered product from a combination of clean flesh and skin with accompanying bone, derived from whole carcasses of chicken thereof, exclusive of feathers and skin" chicken meal CANNOT be made without byproducts!! Chicken meal is never suitable for human consumption as it is rendered. Rendering facilities always process chicken meal using unrefigerated carcass up to but not limited to 7 days old and may contain maggots. AAFCO Definition: Chicken By-Products: Definition: Chicken by-products consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, "Chicken by-products include head, feet, entrails, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, stomach, bones, blood, intestines, and any other part of the carcass not fit for human consumption,"

TO PRODUCE A DOG SAFE FOOD.......we should boycot the bad dog food co.s they will have to make goo safe dog foods for our pets.........Im checking into what dog/cats really need in their foods...Did you know some kids eat dry dog food?I say if my dog can eat it I can eat it.........lets save our pets......the grains that was poisoned.........how much was in dog foods & how much was in human foods???????????its not shipped to US for just dog foods?????????

My friend's pug died mysteriously and painfully. It was only 2 years old. Her vet ran tests and only found a urinary tract infection. Why is it that Vets don't even consider food poisoning? Do they not read the list of recalled products or know the difference between junk food and healthy food.

Just wanted to warn people about a website that makes false claims about pet food in the name of being a "consumer guide" Apparently, the author of this site believes that the FDA and the AAFCO are infallible! http://www.petfoodreport.com/aboutpetfood.htm

Examples: "Every ingredient used in pet food is there for a reason.... The makers of pet food do not put in anything that's not needed"

"The by-products used in pet food are an important source of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids."

"The same preservatives are used in food for people and pet food." I don't recall seeing bha and bht in ANYTHING I've ever consumed!
