Dog Moles

My dog has moles. How does the groomer keep from cutting the moles off?

Most groomers use a clipper blade which will not cut off moles. These blades are NOT the same as the home grooming types of blades.

There are several things which can be used to prevent cutting of a growth.

  • Blade combs are useful to keep the blade away from the skin
  • Some groomers use a vacuum set to lift the hair away from the skin. The clipper blade never comes into contact with the skin.

Be sure to notify your groomer of a mole or growth. Your groomer will make sure precautions are taken not to injure your pet.

My toy Fox terrier has some moles on her. She has one that she rubs and it bleeds all the time. I can't have blood all over my house. She is 14 years old and the vet said she is to old and they will come right back if he removes them. Can you help me? thank you, Donna

Donna, I can't help you as far as mole treatment but I do have some suggestions. If the mole is in a location you can treat it I would suggest coveringr it in a light coating of Super Glue or Liquid Skin. The glue is not a cure but it would give her something to protect it and help prevent the bleeding. The actual Cause of the moles is unknown. I suspect the cause to be dietary and environmental. Old age seems to be when the moles are the most noticable. I'll keep doing research on the subject. Let me know if this helps.

My 2 year old yorkshire terrier has small dark spots on her underside. They look just like freckles. They are flat, not raised.

I noticed one a few months ago but recently I found another 2. Is this normal or should I take her to the vet?

When in doubt, check it out. Better to be safe than sorry.

After the vet checks her out get her off of grains. No grains in her pet food. This should help keep the moles in check.

Lesley,

From where I sit I can't tell you for sure if these are moles or ticks. Take your Shih Tzu to a pet care professional. A quick visit to your groomer, free of charge, should be able to tell you what you are dealing with.

Feli,

I would suggest having them checked out to see what the nature of the moles are. Please see your vet to decide if you should worry or not.

My 6 month old long hair chihuahua had a small bump next to his nose that looked like a tiny scab on the nose last week. The texture was just like the nose and within a week it has grown into a bigger lump which still has the same texture (it just looks like an extension on his nose) now it looks like the top surface is flaking off as white skin. I called to make an appointment to see the vet but the earliest they have available is in a month. I don't know what this "mole" could be and I don't know if it is OK to wait so long. Help!!

Melissa,

Check the diet for corn, wheat, and soy. These three grains will cause moles. The moles are just a warning to more problems if you don't change diets. Try contacting another vet.

Please keep us advised.

I visited the vet on Tuesday and she said it could be a wart but she can't tell without extracting a sample. She says it is not likely that she could get a good sample because of the shape and how hard it is and that he would probably not let her anyway (since it is on his nose.) So she said to wait three months and if it is a wart it will fall off on its own if not then she recommends sedating him and removing it. She also said it could be a viral papilloma, which is contagious to other dogs so we have to keep him away from our other dog until the wart is gone. I wanted to have her just remove it but she says that if it is a viral papilloma and we remove it then there is a high likelihood that other bumps will form on his face or mouth. It's hard though not really knowing if there is something wrong and it is making me anxious to have to wait three months to know...

My 6 year old lab/sheppard has a mole on her stomache. I have not noticed it before, it is a fair size but smushy. Is this a sign of something?

I have a 10 year old beagel, she's very lazy and fat. A while back, she was getting small moles on her legs and near her tail. But now, they've spread and they are all over her body. I have 3 other dogs; she is the oldest. None of the others have it. Is this something I should be worried about?
