When your pooch gives you a kiss, does it nauseate you? Is the smell so bad that you just turn your head? It could indicate dental disease. Fido is just like us in that we need regular dental and tooth care. Tooth decay can lead to many problems and as responsible pet owners, we simply cannot ignore them.

DANGERS OF DENTAL PROBLEMS AND PREVENTION

As it is in humans, dogs also suffer some of the same problems when faced with dental disease. Bacteria builds up and can travel through the bloodstream, affecting other areas of the body, such as the heart. Ulcertated gums can lead to blood posioning if left untreated. All this can hinder the natural immune system, show up as liver disease, kidney problems or failure and basically, shorten the life span of your dog.

Get in the habit of brushing once a day. Tartar can turn into the bad stuff within 24-48 hours. If you cannot clean the teeth and gums properly, you will have to consult a dentist.

Although a regular dental check up is recommended, a veterinarian cleaning usually requires anethesia, which can cause another set of problems.

HAVE A DENTAL ROUTINE

Good dental care begins during puppyhood. Start a regular brushing routine with dog toothpaste (DO NOT use human toothpaste!) and a soft toothbrush. If you can't find a doggy brush, then a child's soft toothbrush will work. Getting to the back teeth is most difficult when brushing but if your dog is used to regular dental care, it won't be as hard. If you are just starting out brushing the teeth, go slow and easy, allowing them to swallow occasionally.

Don't regularly rely on "teeth cleaning" treats, although it is useful between cleanings. There are many name brand products that will help but only when used in conjunction with human intervention of brushing. There are also canine dental rinses, too.

Brushing a Dog's Teeth

YOU ARE YOUR DOG'S DEFENSE

Your pooch relies on you. We take for granted that they can take care of themselves but they can't. They depend on us and dental care is one of the simplest things we can do to ensure their good health.

Thanks for the compliment. Too often, we don't even think about our pets' needs and leave them ignored.
