A Miniature Picnic!

Dollhouse & Miniatures

Ever since I was little I appreciated the little things in life and still holds true today with my favorite hobby, Dollhouse & Miniatures collecting and creating. I spend a lot of time putting a ton of detail into each and every piece I create and it sometimes even allows me to connect with what I really want in life. My home is simple and my dollhouse is extravagant and that is just how I like it!

When creating a new piece or searching for a collectors piece I consider myself a novice. There are many experts out there in the field who really know a ton about dollhouses & miniatures. I am not ashamed to call myself a pro however as I am a pro at the real enjoyment of this hobby for many many years now.

If you are interested in getting into this hobby you won't be disappointed. There is no end to the imagination that is put into these dollhouses and miniatures.

I plan to be an informative source to create your dream dollhouse and learn everything there is to know about miniatures. Here you can find out how to build, light and decorate your dolls house plus get tons of ideas and information on making and collecting miniatures.

Dollhouse miniatures come in many shapes, sizes, materials and themes and if you are thinking about starting out in the doll house hobby it is important that you get as much information as possible about doll houses.

First of all most dollhouses are made to a certain scale. The main scale that houses are made to is twelfth scale; they are twelve times smaller than in real life. The majority of doll houses and doll house furniture is made to this scale and unless you are looking for the type of doll house that will fit Barbie sized dolls it is best to stick to this scale.

You could create your dollhouse out of anything but most dollhouses are made of wood either MDF or plywood. MDF is a compressed wood made of sawdust and glue. It is good for doll houses because it has an excellent surface for painting, is very strong and durable and can be cut into many shapes quite easily. The disadvantage however is that is it a man made wood and the fact that it doesn't have a wood grain doesn't look as authentic. If you are painting it however, it has many uses.

Plywood is much thinner than MDF and isn't as durable. The more decorative dollhouses with small parts and fancy trim tend to be made from plywood and these are more for collectors than children. With plywood you will always see the grain of the wood even when painted and the surface can be somewhat rough. Many highly detailed collectors houses are made from plywood and when completed they are really exquisite.

Many doll houses are based towards one period in time such as medieval, victorian or Tudor style.

Dollhouse miniatures also come in many forms. You could make your dollhouse & miniatures from scratch, or from a plan, build it from a kit, or purchase a fully finished doll house where all of the work has been done for you.

You can also actually get real working lights for your dollhouse which adds a real touch of charm and whimsy. An electric circuit can be fitted around your dollhouse and you can connect working wall and ceiling lights and even standard lamps.

There are lots of methods one could use to decorate a dollhouse. Tiny dollhouse toys or miniature food, printable wallpaper, chunks of carpet...you name it. You can decorate pretty much the same as you would your own house. You can purchase or make your own wallpaper and decorations.

I'm just learning about dollhouses! I'm trying to find ideas for furniture, with household things. I like the idea of taking something and turning it into something else(if this makes sense). Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

My daughter got her first dollhouse when she was little, but now that she is older she still loves to collect the miniature accessories that go with it.
