Is domestic violence an issue today?

When I think about domestic violence, it is a grim family picture that comes into my mind. Is domestic violence an issue today? Yes. Why is it an issue? Well, to put it short and simple, it is against values that stand for human rights. People don’t respect people always as one would want it to be in an ideal world. Many unfortunate partners and children around the world can be granted their share of happy life if they can be saved from domestic violence.

Why do we have this issue of domestic violence?  Nobody is perfect, so mistakes do happen. First step against domestic violence is to create awareness against it. Basically what is and what is not domestic violence. There are a small percentage of spouses who contribute towards domestic violence, unknowingly. There are a larger number of spouses and children who are subjected to domestic violence and they don’t realize it. Ill-treatment of children, spouse, and partners come under the purview of domestic violence.  Domestic violence is more common in less educated communities. Lack of awareness is the reason for this.

Now, what could be the reason behind this ill-treatment or lack of consideration? I would say the main reason is the absence of love or the absence of respect. Now, every individual is unique right? Is everyone capable of loving? Now, that is some food for thought right? Well, I think any psychologically normal human being is capable of love and is also responsible to love. So the moment one feels that the love that should have been ideally there, is no longer there, one should walk out of the partnership before things get worse. Now what about the kids? Be a responsible parent, that’s all one can say at the moment right?

Developing countries face the issue of domestic violence more than developed and well educated societies. In many of the African and Asian communities, domestic violence is seen as just a part of life. This is not right; this needs to change. There is lot of opportunity for the international community to provide aid in this area.

If all of our families breed this culture of loving and respecting one another, we can slowly eradicate this plague that is killing many families today.
