Don't Wear Your PJ's To The Grocery Store...

Go Ahead And Yell At Me...
Well this is a subject that is intended to probe the inner-most being inside of us all.
Not really, but it is something I had to touch on in hopes that you too would get an enjoying moment like I did when thinking about this subject.
I want to begin by admitting that every now and then I get a temptation to run out the door in the early morning hours to the local gas station while wearing what I call my house pants.
Mine are men's pajama pants that are very nice actually, but not intended for public display.
When I am feeling like I just have to run out the door quickly (in this state of not being fully awake) I ask myself a question internally about doing this...in my house pants.
I ask myself in a split second, "What is it going to hurt?"
Then on the drive to the gas station I think, "No one is going to care about this at 6am in the morning right?"
And as I'm walking into this place of business I'm making myself feel better by this thought process --> "There's NO ONE that can look THAT special at 6am right?"
Oh the justification we give ourselves!!
Well I am here to help you and I both. I have put together a set of rules that I think will help us all with the tempation I mentioned above and may also save some ebarassment and some wishing for a "do-over."
First let me say that the driving point behind writing this is not about the need to look good for everyone else. And this is not about putting on a show for the rest of mankind.
This is about having dignity with a "smidge" of pride mixed in and presenting ourselves appropriately in public...and laughing for a minute at something we've ALL done!
So try to understand this. Although we have ALL done it, there has to be a stopping point to this kind of decision making...for the sake of being appropriate...and THAT point is NOW!
So here are the rules of thumb to go by if you want to show a little bit of respect to yourself AND OTHERS. Follow them and you should be able to avoid some general shame. Ignore them, and well...you can't say you weren't warned:
Rule #1: If you have Disney characters, hearts, or polka dots on the design of your pants, you are walking a fine line and should definitley evaluate a second choice before leaving the house.
Rule #2: Noooooo plaid fellas, even if you ARE going to or coming from the golf course.
Rule #3: If your sweatshirt or shirt is more than one size too big, go back home and mow the lawn first.
Rule #4: Ladies, if it says "Pink" on the backside of your pants, they actually were intended for the house (go ahead and ask a Victoria's Secret representative about this : ).
Rule #5: Guys, if you can even come close to calling your pants "House Pants" that's what they are!
Rule #6: If your hair looks like you just fought off a racoon or a pack of squirrels and lost, put it up, comb it, or maybe shave it?
Rule #7: If your shoes resemble a mocasin, a fluffy bunny foot, or are 100% but suede <---> they are meant for carpet.
Now there are many reasons to follow the rules above. Sure, no one is going to openly laugh at you when you don't follow the rules, but what about my friend who shared a story with me concerning his trip to the local grocery store?
I will call him John Smith to protect his embarassing identy (joking "John!"). John decided to bend the rules just a bit and run into the local grocery store quickly to get milk for his children's cereal.
That's a pretty common thing that can be needed in the morning, but what isn't common is what happened when he was pulled over by a police officer on his way back home...and falsely questioned on four felony warrants that weren't his.
Although John didn't go to jail that day, clearing up his mess for 45 minutes in his PJ's was what he called his "most memorable moment" of the day!
Or what about Mary Jones? Mary is not her real name of course, but one I'm using for the purposes of this article. Mary Jones left her house, went shopping for about ten minutes, swung by the post office, and then, when she came back home the apartment complex she lived in appeared to be on fire.
Thankfully Mary's apartment was not on fire, it was only a false alarm. But standing out in front of her complex in her Tinker Bell Pajama Pants for over two hours while almost every apartment was checked was not what she would have chosen that morning.
Now I know we all think we are above all of this and we tell ourselves, "that isn't going to happen to me." But it does. If John and Mary had a "re-do," they would have followed the rules I mentioned above.
Mainly because in life, what you cannot control is other people and the situations they sometimes get us into!
So a good rule of thumb is this; if you would go to lunch or a casual dinner...with your in-laws (or someone else's if you don't have your own) in what you are wearing, you should be ok. If not, then you will officially be deemed here as a "risk taker" and I wish you luck with that my friend!
I would like to thank "John" and "Mary" for providing the stories in this post, you both are very good people. And to all of my other friends out there, this is just my opinion, but please..."Don't Wear Your PJ's To The Grocery Store!"

I wear my PJs out on occasions but, not very often. Typically it is late at night and my wife wants me to got to the 24 hour CVS or mini mart. She usually wants some kind of snack or the baby or kids need some of kind of medicine, diapers, etc... Oh and I guess I go out in my PJs if it is late and I want ice cream. Home made ice cream is well worth the embarasment and not worth waiting to get dressed. Plus I am married, I have no one to impress. But, I love your rules. Great Hub.
This is tongue in cheek, but also serious stuff. As I started reading it, the first thought on going out in PJ's: Who cares? So what if you get stared at or (god forbid) laughed at.
But when I read what happened to John and Mary - good points. I am like Lissie - don't own a nightgown or pj's. But use old T-shirts etc for that. So I allow myself the occasional jump out dressed like that.
Loved this hub
That was fun. The line between PJ's, lounge wear and everyday wear is becoming very gray.
Very good advice indeed...but really hard for some of us lazybones to follow! :P
Of course I would like to say that a laugh was the main goal of this piece. I certainly have no intention of criticizing others. Thank you all for your comments!
When I was growing up in Europe maaaaaany years ago you had special clothes for everything. Your new ones were worn on Sundays to church only, your second best were for Saturdays and for shopping etc. Heaven forbid that the neighbors ever saw you in your work day clothes on a Sunday. Thank goodness the rules have changed and we can all just wear whatever we want. (mind you I still get the defiance thrills whenever I take a quick trip down to the store in my 'house clothes')
great hub regards Zsuzsy
Hi scottaye73! Interesting & I think funny too. But I don't agree with you because who cares. If you can be in your swimwear at the beach almost half naked, what is the problem with going out in Pj's. What do you think is going to happen if you go out in your Pj's & your friends or relatives find out? Well don't worry about what people think, do what you feel good or easy. Have fun & a nice day too.
Great! Loved it. Now for something to convince men not to wear those horrid mesh sport shorts out of the house (especially with packer boots)!
Funny article, I have never worn my P.J's out of the house, but have witnessed many people who do. I have to admit though, just once in my life I would love to go grocery shopping in my P.J's and bunny slippers before I die. :-)
Luckily I live in a small town of cowboys and cowgirls, they just don't care and neither do I! lol...although I can't say as I've worn my true pajama's, but baggy pants and t-shirt or sweatshirt are pretty close. Sometimes I go to the store without my hair combed...but you're right about one thing for sure, sometimes I've regretted that. And not because of what most people see, but because of the hot guy that I totally would've flirted with had I not been in my morning "outfit". Great hub, welcome to HP!
I'm really liking ALL of these comments. Like I mentioned above, the intent of this was for us all to laugh at ourselves just a bit. Thanks again for the feedback! ~ Scott
LOL! I stay away from wearing my "house clothes" out because it would be just my luck to break down in rush hour traffic, and have to stand there for everyone to see! My kids think I am crazy sometimes because I won't wear sweats to the store. I tell them, that's what I wear around the house, not out of it! I'll have to show them this. LOL!
As I sleep In the ....how shall I put this delicately???.....ok.....naked!...it would most likely not be a good idea to run anywhere without first dressing. God forbid my house catch fire or I have to chase a burglar or something.
thnaks for all nice advice
K@ri, I'm glad we agree! I like to laugh about this topic when I'm out sometimes and see other people. Thank you for your comment.
R.Blue, some of us do have the same problem too! lol!! Thank you for your hilarious comment.
Lgali, thank you...I will be reading your pages! ~ Scott
Great Hub. I am currently a student at a local 2 year College and I can not count how often these "tips" have crossed my mind.
Although I have to admit that a firm female bottom adorned in a tight fitting "Pink" garment can be an extream test of fidelity.
Thankully I look my age (46) and these 18-25 year olds avoid me like the plague. But I am still a man, and can not help but sneak a glance from time to time.
Well thank you trooper, I have to admit that Rule #4 probably shouldn't have been there, but hey, it has generated some conversation.
I know what you mean about going back to school. I am in my 30's and I went back to school not that long ago and wow did I feel old!
Thanks for you comment, and I will be reading your hubs too! Have a great day. ~ Scott
My first husband was in college when we married, and in exchange for financial aid he had to clean the science building. Starting at *4 am*. We had one car, and I was nowhere near ready to get dressed for the day at 3:30, so I'd drive him to work in my PJs and robe with crossed fingers that I wouldn't get pulled over on the way back and/or the car wouldn't break down.
Nowdays I have a pair of scrubs to slip into for quick runs to he store. I live near two hospitals, so half the people grocery shopping in the wee hours are in scrubs, with Disney characters no less! Shoes used to be the tipoff to who just came from work and who was on a milk run, but that was before the hospitals allowed staff to wear Crocs with their scrubs. ;D
Jama, I guess I didn't think about hospital scrubs when I wrote this! Thank you for sharing your story! ~ Scott
well as long as your covered and your pants aren't hanging down below your bottom crack and your hair is somewhat combed in this small town you see it all...I however try always to be fairly decent when in public, but a lot of the reason is like k@ri says my luck would be to break down or do what I did the first time ever last week...lock my keys in my car....you are so sweet...G-Ma :O) Hugs
Good advice - even though sometimes it cannot be helped! If I am laying around in my pjs and have to run to the store I am going in my jammers as long as they are appropriate! At a store I used to work for, we just hoped that everyone who walked in was wearing a shirt (and shoes)! Very funny hub!
Lol!! G-Ma, couldn't agree more about the small town stuff! I'm originally from a small town myself! Peppermint, as you might guess, laughter was the main goal of this hub, I think we all are guilty of this at times. Thank you BOTH for your comments here, and I hope you have a great night. ~ Scott : )
I am very guilty of running out of the house in the morning in my dale jr pjs and sometimes an oversized shirt or a "wife beater" on,(of course i have something on under it) but the only time I do this is when I am in dire need of smokes! That is the only time. Maybe I should stop doing this, don't want people to laugh! Ha Ha
Alissa, see what smoking does to us?!! We may even get caught out at the store with our PJ's on! Thanks for your comment. ~ Scott

LOL very funny ! What I like with the current fashions though I can wear PJs all day and they look OK! I started it when we did a long camping trip and rather than wearing PJs I started wearing old shorts and tops - and then I just kept on doing it ...
