It's an iPod world

As if the iPod wasn’t already cool enough. They just keep making it more irresistible! They now have actually found a way of making you never leave home without it – or need anything but you iPod. They have just released the iPhone, which incorporates your everyday needs and wants into one little device.

So what is an iPod?

An iPod is a portable device for storing and playing audio files. Designed by Apple Computer, iPods have distinctive styling and can hold anywhere from a few hundred to ten thousand songs! The original iPod was released in 2001, with the iPod mini, approximately one-third the size of the original iPod coming along two years later. The iPod Shuffle, further reduced the size down to that of a package of gum!

When connected with a personal computer, your iPod communicates with software called iTunes. The iPod and iTunes work together to synchronize the songs available on the iPod to those available on the PC.

Some of iPods funky accessories

Many accessories have been made for the iPod. Some accessories add extra features that other music players have, such as sound recorders, FM radio tuners, wired remote controls, and audio/visual cables for TV connections.

Other accessories offer unique features like the Nike+iPod pedometer and the iPod Camera Connector.

Other notable accessories include external speakers, wireless remote controls, protective cases/films and wireless earphones.

The white earphones (or "earbuds") have become symbolic of the iPod brand. Advertisements feature them prominently, often contrasting the white earphones (and cords) with people shown as dark silhouettes.

BMW released the first iPod automobile interface. This allows drivers of new BMW vehicles to control their iPod using either the built-in steering wheel controls or the radio head-unit buttons. Similar systems are available in new Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Acura, Audi, Honda, Renault and Volkswagen.

In mid-2007, four major airlines, United, Continental, Delta, and Emirates agreed to install iPod seat connections in their planes. The free service will allow passengers to power and charge their iPod, along with viewing their video and music libraries on individual seat-back displays.

You can download audio books and programs onto your iPod. You can access these from LoDingo straight onto your iPod, and you can listen to them over and over again. They’re items range from Health and Lifestyle, Business and Success, Learning, Travel, Entertainment, Audiobooks and Sports. You can download workouts, nutrition guides, quit smoking programs, educational programs as well as free travel guides and language learning programs; kids books and adult books.

The iPod portable music player topped 100 million sales in 2007! Over the 2006 holiday season, Apple's players dominated the market, with various iPod models accounting for eight of the ten best-selling portable music players

Supplying content for the iPod has also been a lucrative business. Apple's iTunes online store has sold more than 2.5 billion songs and 50 million TV shows.

The iPod reached the 100m mark more than twice as fast as arguably the most influential portable music player ever. The Sony Walkman did not reach the 100 million milestone until 1993, fourteen years after the first model was shipped.

In 2005, New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority placed advertisements on the subways warning passengers that "Earphones are a giveaway. Protect your device”, after iPod thefts on the subway rose from zero in 2004 to fifty in the first three months of 2005.
