Dont pay too much for paint

Here are some basic tips from experience alone.

What is the best paint? Most will answer Sherwin Williams paint. Why? Because SW is the only paint company/manufacturer that is in every form of advertisement there is. TV, radio, print ads, the internet. SW marketing campiagn has been going on for years and target DIY types. Their stores are everywhere and their paint cost more than anyone elses.

Bottom line, paint is paint (within reason). Kwal paint, Pittsburg paint, Behr paint, Dutch boy, Davis paint, whatever, it is all basically the same. Always buy the midgrade midpriced paint from any place you buy it. There is no such thing as lifetime paint or one coat paint. It may say it on the can and the sales rep may sell it as that but trust me, No it just wont happen. Try to buy something that is the best seller at the store, this means that the paint contractors are buying this paint, Dont get the Super deluxe or forty dollar a gallon stuff it is just not worth it. If you put top of the line paint over 5 year caulk, guess what? You are painting again in 3 years. Colors and styles change anyway so why try to put a lifetime finish (which wont happen) in an earthtone color that is in style now, when in 5-7 years pastels will come back in style.

Tip2 always haggle with the paint store salesman or manager. If you are paying 26 dollars a gallon for the paint you've decided on, The contractor that comes in an hour later for the same thing is paying 16 dollars. There is alway room for negotiation in the paint world, do not be afraid to haggle. Product inventory is not an exact science at these places and most paint managers will be happy to sell you a discounted price.

When I said earlier that paint was paint, I meant from exclusive to paint stores. Wal-mart for instance will not have a good product. Neither will a surplus outlet, unless it is a name brand paint. If a companies price for paint is 6 dollars listed then that is probably not a good paint to buy.

After haggling and comparing you should be paying between 17-22 a gallon and be assured of having a descent paint for your house.

I've been hearing about Benjamin Moore paints a lot lately. Are they another high-priced-for-no-reason brand?

I tend to buy mid-grade mid-price pretty much everything out of habit. Kind of neat to see you recommend it for paint too. Some good advice here. I don't see how you can stand painting. It looks so fun, you know, but it's not at all. :O Your advice to haggle is interesting and I'd have never thought of it and even knowing I doubt I could ever do that. Too chicken.
