Door Hardware Helps Pull Home Remodeling Projects Together

Planning: Budget for the Project
Before you begin to replace your door hardware, it is always necessary to make sure you have properly budgeted for the task. In order to do this, take a walk through your home as you would when you were considering purchasing a home. Note all the nicks, dents, cracks and scrapes not only with door knobs, locks and hinges but also the doors and cabinets themselves. Write down what pieces you will need to replace, including all screws. Next, research the cost of the replacement pieces you will need, adding extra money as a buffer for any emergencies or unexpected costs
Purchasing: Research Your Options
No two rooms in your home are alike. So too are the accessories you use to accent your home’s style. When choosing door knob replacements, be sure to do the necessary research prior to purchasing. Knobs and handles are available in a variety of materials and finishes; the proper combination of the two packs a powerful one-two stylistic punch for your home’s décor. Materials used for most knobs include brass, chrome, iron, stainless steel, colored glass, nickel and pewter. Finishes range from shiny and lustrous like satin or polished to dark and elegant like weathered, burnished and matte. Additionally, consider upping the size of your handles. Larger handles not only look great but also make opening cabinets and drawers easier, which is ideal for high-traffic areas such as kitchens or bathrooms.
Placement: Which Knob for Which Room?
Adding new door levers and knobs throughout your home should not be executed carelessly. By choosing what styles coordinate properly with each room, you’ll increase the attention to detail as well as increase the value of your home. For instance, bathrooms are often covered with germs and other unwelcome substances. By installing stainless steel cabinetry, you can make cleaning even easier. Strong chemical agents do not tarnish the steel, both eliminating germs as well as keeping the material shiny and unscathed. Likewise, using stainless steel fixtures in say, a living room or family room, may feel a bit sterile and unwelcome. A rich, weathered bronze door handle indicates sophistication and an eye for detail.
Installation: Easy as One, Two, Three!
Once you have picked out the knobs and accessories and designated certain rooms for specific colors and finishes, you are ready to install your new cabinet hardware. This is the easy part! Unscrew the existing screws from the hinges, where applicable. If you want to get your kids involved, partially unscrew the hinge and allow your progeny do to the little work for you! Collect all old screws and handles. Before you throw them out, however, consider taking them to a junk yard or offer them for free as a “curbside” treat. You never know who can turn your trash into their treasure.
Celebration: What to do Now
After your home renovation project has been completed, you may be left with a small feeling of remorse. Now with the handles and cabinets properly installed and bathing in the limelight, you’ll have the confidence and time to tackle other projects. So what are you waiting for? If the weather outside is not conducive to repainting the side of your home or weeding your garden, look to your home’s interior. Chances are that something will need to be fixed, updated or thrown out. Go for it!
