From Odds and Ends

Door stops are simple fun projects you can even get your kids involved in!

There are many common household items that can make great doorstops with just a little imagination (and time).

First let's talk about the ones that stop doors from opening too wide and hitting the all (inevitably leaving a hole in the wall!).

To make a stop for the doorknob:

Take an old stocking (pantyhose leg, regular sock, old slipper sock, take your pick) and cut to about 4" long. Fill it with any type of stuffing (more old socks perhaps) leaving enough room at the top to (a) cover the doorknob and (b) stitching the sock closed. About 1 - 1 1/2" from the top of the sock hand or machine stitch closed and then put it on the doornob. The cushioning offers protection to your wall (from holes and marring!)

To make stops to keep the door open you have a million possibilities so we'll talk about only a few.

Sock Friends: Take two socks (they don't have to match in color but should match in length) and fill them with whatever material you want (sand, gravel, rice, beans,) to add weight. Attach them together (in any formation you want) and you can add pom pom eyes, ears, whatever to make them 'friendly' creatures.

Old Cans: Take an old can (determine the size by how much space you have) and fill the the can with any material that will add weight (kitty litter, gravel, sand, potting soil, rice, beans) cover tightly and secure with strong tape (duct tape works best). Wrap the outside of the can in any type of wrapping paper. You can use printed gift paper, or you can use plain paper and put prints on it with stencils, stickers, you pick!

Bottles: Have a ton of decorative bottles laying around but never can figure out what to do with them? Turn them into doorstops! Fill with brightly colored stones, water - whatever will add enough weight to hold the door open!

There are a lot of other things you can make door stops out of but the above ones are the easy ones and can be turned into a great rainy day project to do with the kids!

These sound fun! I don't have kids at home right now, but I am going to use some of these ideas anyway!
