I take a look back at this great arcade beat 'em up

If you are lucky enough to be on Xbox Live then you will already be aware of the marketplace. As well the free downloadable demos on offer, you can also download arcade classics for a small fee. An added dimension is the fact that you can play some of these multi-player on the network.

Double Dragon is one such game, anybody who found themselves in the arcade back in the 80's would have almost definitely sunk a few coins into this machine. Although it could be played single player, the real fun was playing as co-op.

With an amazing plot, uh, some gang has nicked your girlfriend and you want to get her back (LOL, great plot hey), how could it fail. So, the task in hand was simply to bust your way through levels of baddies and save the day.

The first thug you meet is Williams who was pretty soft but gave you the chance to try put your moves; flying kicks, punches, elbows and head-butts. The first real struggle though came in the form of a huge, wall crushing thug called bobo. This was the time to use one of the weapons which you could steel from other villains such as the baseball bat.

Other weapons included boulders, barrels, knives and whips, the latter used by a feisty blond called Linda. I well time flying kick could knock people off ledges or onto meat grinding conveyor belts.

Most people lost their lives in the infamous bridge section, if you miss timed jumping the gap, you would find yourself taking an unscheduled swim in the river. However, this section seemed like a walk in the park (excuse the pun) compared to the main corridors of the palace.

What seemed like statues suddenly came to life and started spearing you as you walked past, and the you had to contend with moving blocks that flew out of the wall and could knock you clean off the walkway, another life lost.

Once you reached the final room, then all hell breaks out. The main concern is watching out for Mr Big who wealds a huge machine gun (and a Mohican), one hit from that and you'd be brown bread! However, if you were playing the game as 2 players, and you defeated him and his gang, then there would be one final fight before the girl could be yours...
