The crack is vintage Seinfeld, even if it comes from the mouth of an animated bee: "Why would anyone wear a toe ring? It's like putting a hat on your knee." Thanks everyone, and try the honey. Despite a script that buzzes feebly to the finish line, Bee Movie manages to channel Jerry Seinfeld's clean, observational sitcom humor into a feature-length insect cartoon.

To which even Jerry might ask: Why exactly do we need another insect cartoon? Weren't A Bug's Life, Antz and The Ant Bully enough? And sure enough, Bee Movie has moments that will remind you of all three. But it also has a strikingly consistent wit and a vigorous visual imagination that fly on their own. And that Seinfeld guy, who also co-wrote the script, is pretty funny.

He gives voice to Barry B. Benson, a recent college graduate who longs to seek adventure outside the carefully ordered hive. Upon graduation, every bee, including Barry and his buddy Adam (Matthew Broderick), is assigned a job to do for the rest of his or her life. The hive looks dazzling to us, an intricately designed world of hexagonal industry. But it's no place for a rebel, and Barry is a rebel; the point is brought home in a clever homage to The Graduate that finds him floating in a pool of honey as his parents (Kathy Bates and Barry Levinson) grill him about his future plans.

When he finally gets out on a run with the pollen jocks, a macho brigade of bees that soars through Mr. Seinfeld's New York stomping ground in search of flowers, the movie reaches its visual peak. The thrill of the outside world is conveyed with a kinetic rush, and a little bit of danger: Barry gets stuck to a tennis ball, is befriended by Vanessa the florist (Renée Zellweger) and discovers, horror of horrors, that humans are jarring and selling the bees' precious honey. Even worse, the label on one brand carries the image of Ray Liotta.

It's around this time that Bee Movie sheds any semblance of internal logic. Vanessa is amazed to find out that a bee can speak - but in this world, it seems all bees can speak. Her boorish suitor, voiced by Patrick "Puddy" Warburton, sees Barry as a romantic rival, a concept that conjures all sorts of unpleasant mental images. Once Barry takes his case to court, where John Goodman is the defense lawyer and Oprah Winfrey the judge, the human onlookers are more concerned with the case at hand than the fact that - what do you know! - bees not only can talk, they can parse legal arguments.

Best advice: Ditch logic if you can, and go with the urbanely clever flow, which is easy to do until about the last 20 minutes, when Bee Movie jumps the hive and becomes one of those movies that seems to make itself up as it goes along. Up to that point the film's charm, quickness and design carry the day (although Chris Rock's wisecracking mosquito, Mooseblood, vanishes far too quickly).

Bee Movie's frantic finish keeps it from greatness; it's ultimately just enough to give you a pleasant little buzz. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

'Bee Movie' is a comedy that will change everything you think you know about bees. Having just graduated from college, a bee by the name of Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) finds himself disillusioned with the prospect of having only one career choice - honey. As he ventures outside of the hive for the first time, he breaks one of the cardinal rules of the bee world and talks to a human, a New York City florist named Vanessa (Renée Zellweger). He is shocked to discover that the humans have been stealing and eating the bees' honey for centuries, and ultimately realizes that his true calling in life is to set the world right by suing the human race for stealing their precious honey.
