A
small town on the Maine coast where magic exists. A Dragon tied to one
of the founding families. A house that allows no harm to come to the
women residing within its walls.
Gary Morgan finds himself, at
the age of 17, the sole heir of the Morgan legacy of piracy, secrets,
and The Dragon. He finds that he will have to work with the Haskell
Witch when his father and sisters are kidnapped and his mother is
killed by a brujo that is after the powers of The Dragon. In the
process he learns that his "dead uncle" Ben is his real father and both
of them learn that Caroline, the next Haskell Witch, is Ben's daughter.
Hetley
delves into magic in a fashion that sheds new light on the power it
really creates. He also shows lesbianism in the form it truly is - love
between two people so strong that would do anything for each other,
including dying.
Hetley's characters are so well developed that
you can't help to come to like bumbling Caroline and young but so brave
Gary and come to hate the brujo Antonio. This is definitely a new twist
on a magical story with it taking place in the here and now.
In
honesty, the book starts a bit slow and I had my doubts about whether I
would get into it or not. Let's just say that I finished it in two days
and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel, Dragon's Teeth.
