Drinking Healthy Coffee Vs. Decaffeinated Coffee - No Contest

Many people drink decaffeinated (decaf) coffee when they sit down to a dinner or visit their local coffee shop.

They think they are getting the flavor and benefits of drinking regular coffee without the jitters associated with caffeine.

However, if people understood the process of decaffeinating coffee and the increased health risks, they may want to reconsider.

A 2005 study of 187 people by the Fuqua Heart Centre in Atlanta, GA indicated that decaffeinated coffee may be less healthy than the caffeinated alternative.

In an article written by Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor for “The Independent,” he wrote, “In the first randomized study of the two coffees, researchers found that the decaffeinated variety raises the level of fats and “bad” cholesterol in the blood more than caffeinated blends.”

“Researchers found an 18 percent rise in blood fat and an 8 percent rise in a protein linked with LDL (bad cholesterol) among decaffeinated coffee drinkers compared with those who drink caffeinated coffee or none at all.

The study was led by Dr. Robert Superko. He said that decaffeinated coffee was not as healthy because it was made from high-flavor beans that contained more oil. “The decaffeination process can extract flavenoids, so manufacturers tend to choose a bean that has a more robust flavor.”

All decaffeination processes strip the beans of their natural flavor.

As a result, many companies must use beans with more oil so that their decaf coffee has a taste somewhat similar to a caffeinated variety. But this leads to increased LDL levels or bad cholesterol.

Decaffeination was first used in 1905 by a chemist, Ludwig Roselius. His process included a dangerous hydrocarbon, benzene.

Today’s methods are not as severe. But the most common decaffeination processes use chemicals that have not been scientifically tested for their long-term health effects.

You may already know my story. I cannot drink regular caffeinated coffee.

I enjoy the taste. I like the short-term energy boost.

But I am super-sensitive to caffeine. It just gives me the jitters and makes me “hyper.” At night, I can’t fall asleep. Or if I do, I wake up after a couple of hours and can’t go back to sleep.

Drinking decaffeinated coffee affects me in pretty much the same way.

I remember back when I was in the U.S. Navy. I was an Engineering Officer on my ship. I was the Engineering Officer of the Watch at different times of the day. The toughest watch was from midnight to 4:00 AM.

So I would drink a cup of coffee or two during that watch. It kept me awake and alert. But when I returned to my bunk around 5:00 AM, I couldn’t go to sleep. Most of the time, I would end up going for at least 48 hours before I was able to sleep at all.

That was really a bummer. So I stopped drinking caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, even though I liked it.

But today, I drink coffee.  Today, I drink healthy coffee.

Healthy coffee tastes great.  And I don’t get the jitters or the “hyper” feeling.  I have no problem sleeping at night.

Healthy coffee is a fully caffeinated coffee but gives me a smooth, sustained energy and stamina throughout the day.  A powerful herbal extract has been added to the healthy coffee that apparently counteracts the jittery feeling I get with regular coffee.
