Drive Smarter, Drive Greener.

Driving smart can not only help reduce emissions but save you money too. In an ideal world, we would all have green cars or not drive at all, however this is the real world and many of us do need to drive.
The way you drive has a direct impact on fuel efficiency. The more fuel you use, the more carbon dioxide is released to the environment. By driving smarter, you can cut your emissions by 8-10% and save an estimated £220 per year in fuel costs.
10 Tips for Greener Driving
- Under inflated tyres create more resistance while you are driving, causing your engine to work harder and using more fuel. Check your tyres are at the right pressure regularly.
- Accessories such as roof racks, bike racks and roof boxes affect your cars aerodynamics and reduces fuel efficiency. Remove them when not in use.
- Avoid short journeys. A cold engine uses more fuel and catalytic converters can take up to 5 miles to become effective.
- Drive away immediately when starting cold, Idling to warm up the engine wastes fuel and causes rapid engine wear.
- De-clutter! The more weight your car carries the more fuel it uses. De-clutter your boot and take only what is necessary for your journey.
- Watch your speed. The faster you drive the more fuel you consume. At 70mph you can use up to 9% more fuel than driving at 60mph and 15% more than at 50mph
- Watch your revs. Revving the engine only wastes fuel and increases wear and tear. Using your gears wisely can reduce your revs. Diesel cars can shift up at 2000rpm and petrol cars at 2500rpm.
- Idling wastes fuel, if you're likely to be stuck in traffic longer than a few minute, turn off the engine.
- Anticipate road conditions and drive smoothly avoiding sharp increases in speed or heavy breaking.
- Plan your journey to avoid congestion, road works or getting lost.
With fuel costs rising, smarter greener driving can save you money and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions that affect our environment.
