Drive-ins and Dragging

When we were teenagers our Saturday evenings were filled with a whole lot of fun. Most of my friends had a set of wheels and Saturday afternoons were spent washing, waxing and polishing their cars and trucks. We took a lot of pride in our vehicles because most of us had worked hard earning the money to purchase our vehicles only a few that I am aware of got any help from parents. Mine was an old 58 Cheverolet Impala (see my previous hub) and although it was ugly as homemade sin, it was all mine and I was just as proud of it had it had been a Corvette. The girls I dated didn't seem to mind and gas was cheap only around 25 cents a gallon in those days, I have stopped and put 50 cents worth in my tank a lot of times.

We would go into town and drag all the burger joints from one end of town to the other. Main Street at that time had three lanes and oftentimes we would drag race from one red light to the other. The street was later changed into a serpentine pattern and a curfew time established ending the Saturday night drags races on main. We would go to the drive-ins and order cokes and burgers. One of our favorites was Jody's, famous for its hot dogs and shakes. Jody was the wife of the owner and had a pair of roller skates she used to get about, taking orders and bringing them back to our parked cars. It was at Jody's I was first introduced to  foot long hot dogs and tater tots, my favorites, I could eat two of those, an order of tots, and a chocolate shake with no problem back in the day.

The Skyland drive-in was a huge restaurant with parking in the back. A lot of necking and petting went on in this parking lot that was poorly lighted and I sure did my share of smooching in this secluded parking lot. Hickies and swollen lips, remember?.. We had an A & W Root Beer located at the end of main and it was a favorite hangout. Most of the drive-ins closed in our town with the addition of BrugerKing, Hardee's, McDonalds, Chic-Filet.and a host of other fast food joints that came into town replacing our favorite hangouts. Teenagersof today don't know what it was like to drag main and all the drive-ins. We sure had a lot of fun, clean fun I might add and rarely was there any trouble.

We do have a Sonic Drive-in on the outskirts of town and occasionally my wife and I will stop in, order a burger and a coke with two straws just for old times sake.

Great hub, Robert. I remember drive-ins and I miss them. Right now, I want a hamburger, because your hub made me hungry.
