Driving With an Ipod
57Ipod Nano
My new Ipod Nano
I recently purchased my first Ipod. I got the Black Nano and it has made listening to music in the car so much more enjoyable. The Nano works seemlessly with my Mac. I purchased a cassette adapter since I have an older car and have heard some people have trouble with static and an FM Transmitter. Plus I don't really mind the wires. I always hated switching CD's while driving and with the Ipod I have nothing to worry about.
Works Great with the Kids
I have 3 boys and the 2 older ones are always asking me to find different songs whenever I take my wife's car. My wife has 2 visors full of CDs and more CDs take up most of the console. My boys are 8 and 5 and don't give me much of a starting point for where to find the song they are asking for. Normally I never find it and need to start driving.
But now with the Ipod we just went on a long trip and it went very smoothly. I loaded my MAC with lots of their favorite songs. Then created a playlist for them on my Ipod. My boys were happily surprised to hear all of their favorite songs on the long car ride. It also saved me lots of frustration trying to find song number 10 on that CD we listend to a few days ago.

I also enjoy driving with my Ipod. I have a 30GB Ipod Video. It's great, I love it.I use to have a radio adapter that just plugged right into the bottom of it and I could find a radio frequency to have it float through my speakers. Although I found that often it would come in and sound well, like crap.I went out and purchased an adapter to plug my Ipod in so it wouldn't die and ended up using a tape cassette, the ones we use to use for our CD Walkmans and it worked GREAT!I just recently bought a new stereo for my car and it came with a USB adapter built right into it. I can easily plug my Ipod into that and it picks it up almost instantly and begins playing. One thing I do not like about it, is that I don't have control of my Ipod when I do it. I have to set it to shuffle and just let it go, however I can change tracks on my Stereo.Another great feature is if my Ipod is plugged in and charging if I'm not using it, it can also be hooked up to the stereo using the AUX channel with the adapter that came with the stereo. It's pretty sweet. I enjoy it a lot.
Great tips Jim, it is nice you are doing this, others play their own favorite music rather than kids'.
Solarshingles I have lots of CDs in mine and my wife's car too. It can be a pain trying to find the one I am looking for. I really should transfer all of them onto my Ipod.
driverslicense I agree usually the FM transmitters don't sound very good. People just seem to use them since they are more convenient without wires. The adaper definitely sounds better. I only wish my radio had a direct input I could use instead.
cgull8m I am glad you liked my Ipod suggestions. It really is convenient for long car rides with the kids.
Thanks Jim for sharing your story with your sons. I've finally delivered my last to college so I get to hear all my own music. I listened to 18 yrs. of kids stuff. I'm free, I'm free! You can't tell I'm happy or anything can you?
Dottie, congrats on the newly found freedom. You deserve time to listen to your own music. I confess I do get to pick the music on my drive to and from work, but that is about it. So I do get to enjoy a few of the playlists on my Ipod then.
i'd probably end up being too distracted and getting killed if i drove with an IPOD. It is bad enough for me to try changing radio stations or mess with the CD player while driving. For some reason I have been resistant to getting anything like an ipod. maybe one day.
The good thing about the Ipod is that you don't need to take it out and look for another one like a CD. If you are looking for a specific song it could easily be quite a hassle. I usually just play my playlist in order or set it for shuffle then let it be. It can run like that for the whole ride.

Jim, I love your story about the practical use of iPod in the car. I still remember how many times I was seeking for CDs all over the large SUV, but I hadn't found the right one. I also like, how you have managed to please your very demanding (music-wise) young sons by uploading the right music at home from your home Mac computer. (I have an iPod, but I somehow cannot get used to it).
