Verizon takes on AT&T and Apple
Verizon Wireless and AT&T have always been battling each other for years for number one phone and cell phone service but now Verizon is pointing their guns directly towards Apple. At one point we thought Apple and Verizon were going to partner up and bring the iPhone to their service but it seems all that has gone down the drain. Verizon's new ad campaign is poking fun at Apple's "App for that" commercials with their "Map for that" commercials. Also most recently they have been attacking the iPhone with their Droid commercial. Talking about what the iPhone cannot do Droid can.
Features and Specs
The Motorola Droid is quite an impressing cell phone. It has a TI OMAP 3430 processor that is a very fast processor and supports running simultaneous applications with its Android 2.0 os. The Droid's screen is a 854x480 pixels display and its really stunning. Colors do pop and are rich. The screen size is also a whopping 3.7 inch widescreen and is a capacitive touch screen that supports multi-touch on some areas but not others. For example the virtual keyboard is supports it but not the web browser so no pinch and zoom for this phone. The Droid has a 5 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom but it would have been nice for it to have an optical zoom instead. The camcorder does shoot at 720 by 480 resolution, making it a nice little device for youtube videos. One thing that is rare for Verizon phones but this one has is WIFI connectivity. So you can use hotspots to save up on your internet bill.
Features and Specs
The iPhone 3gs is perhaps the best phone out there at the moment. The hardware and software is among the best. The phone has a 3.5 inch capacitive touch screen that supports multi-touch and is 480 by 320 pixels. The iPhone has a 3 mega pixel camera with autofocus plus tap to focus. The camcorder shoots VGA videos that look really good. The iPhone 3gs has a amsung S5PC100 ARM Cortex-A8 processor that is very fast. Also the phone has 258mb of ram. The operating system has had time to work out any bugs and now is running the 3.0 iphone os.
iPhone vs Droid
Now lets compare the two phones starting with processors. Both phones have top of the line processors for a cell phone and both are running at 600 MHz so it is a tie. Also they both have 256 MB DRAM both phones are quite fast. The Droid does how ever have a better camera than the iPhone with 5 megapixels compared to the iphone's 3 megapixel. The Droid also kills the iPhone in its screen with a 3.7 inch capacitive touch screen at 854 x 480 resolution. The iphone has a 480 x 320 3.5 inch capacitive touch screen. The Droid has higher specs for the screen but the iphone has mastered the touch screen and there is no other phone that is as responsive and easy to use, so we will see if the Droid's screen can match it. This is for the user to decide if they want a virtual keyboard or real keyboard but the Droid does have both. Personally I like have a physical keyboard but the iPhone's virtual keyboard works for me too. Storage is the next topic. The iPhone has two models now a 16gig and a 32gig. The harddrive is flash and built in with the expansion slots. The droid has only half a gig of built in memory but ships out with a 16 gig flash memory card. The iphone takes the win here. Now comparing software. The iphone has had time to make their os work and function good and time to develop tons of apps. The iphone might not support open development but they do support through their software to develop apps and games for them they just have to get approved. This is a good thing so they do not get dumb apps. The Droid is running Android 2.0 software and also has some time to grow and work well but does not have as much apps as iPhone. The public has time to see iPhone work so it will just take time to see if Android 2.0 is a good os too.
