Commercialization in Drug Abuse Testing

Most people have had at some point in their lives, a drug test. They might have been applying for a job or trying out for a position on a sports team. In today’s world the drug abuse test is a common fact of life. The drug abuse test is administered in order to find out if the presence of illegal or banned drugs are in a persons body. It is mandatory that people pass a drug test for many jobs like law enforcement, commercial truck drivers and flight attendants. Sports associations also require drug tests for banned performance enhancing drugs or steroids. In recent years, many labs and private companies that offer commercial drug tests have come about. For many parents who feel their children may be doing drugs, there is now a at home drug test available. It is this commercialization of the drug test that has stirred up great debate.

Many people believe that our forefathers would have included bodily fluids in the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the right to be free of unreasonable searches and seizures, had the technology for the drug test been around at the time. They feel these tests are intrusive to their privacy and violate their rights. Others see the drug test as a way to ensure public safety and enjoy working in drug free environments. They see these tests as a necessary invasion of privacy. Due to it’s common use, there are many people who try to figure out how to pass a drug test. Some people seeking to get around the drug test, buy a at home drug test kit and test themselves before submitting to the commercial drug test to be assured of their passing. The sports world has seen a explosion of players that have been caught with performance enhancing drugs in their systems, giving them a unfair advantage over the non drug taking players. Sports agents, coaches and military recruiters have been caught teaching people how to pass a drug test.

One reason people may mistrust the use of drug tests, is in the past drug abuse tests often read false positive results. People who had taken over the counter pain relievers or eaten a food like poppy seeds found themselves testing positive for heroin or other drugs. This led to fears of not passing drug tests for non drug taking people. The new drug test has been refined to screen out foods and potential products that might give a false positive result. Efforts to reassure people about drug tests have made information on how to pass a drug test in large circulation. This is important to law enforcement agencies, so they can deal correctly with drug offenders. People seeking employment or involved in a accident with commercial vehicles also benefit from the improved testing.

So whether your trying for a new job or on your way to becoming the next Babe Ruth, you can feel better about passing a drug test. No matter what your personal beliefs on drug tests are, the drug test has come along way in improvement.

It is a shame that we have to be testing everyone but the abuse of drugs and alcohol in the workplace is rampant. I for one do not want to be tested but I also do not want my life put in jeopardy because of someone Else's inability to restrain from chemical use while on the clock. C.S.

Great hub - I believe drug-driving is a big problem and one that law enforcement officers worldwide have to face. Having said that, we still need to exercise constitutional care and have just reason before testing all drivers...
