Drug Eluting Stents - Angioplasty Stents

So the heart attack has passed, now for the drug coated stent operation also known as angioplasty and although the old balloon stent has been about since 1977 it was in 1993 that the coronary stent made it's debut. Believe it or not you are not in hospital long if you suffer a heart attack, I had mine on a Sunday, operation on the Friday and sorry Sir out you go on the Saturday morning.

But back to the operation I was getting, I was to receive 1 stent to the left side of my heart to a small artery but during the operation they would check to see if I needed more than just that one stent fitted.

The Pre-Stent Hospital Talk

I was lying in bed reading when the nurse arrived with a nice folder and a little glass block on her hand. She told me that after my scan on the " Echo" ( much the same scan as a pregnancy scan that shows the baby, only this shows inside the heart), I would need an operation on the Friday that involved me getting angioplasty or getting a drug coated stent.

The operation would take 45 minutes, I would be awake but drugged and I would actually be able to watch the operation myself. Oh Happy Days I thought, sure beats watching the X-Factor, but one more thing she said. Yeah the usual there is always that 1 percent chance that you could die on the operating table as they will be running a thin tube in through my thigh and up through my arteries into my heart. Then she showed me a clear see through bit of marble that contained an actual sized stent, such a small little bugger that was to hopefully save my life.

The Drug Coated Stent Operation

Well before the operation they actually have to shave you down below and I didn't really mind as that pretty redhead nurse seems a dab hand with a razor. But unlike the rest of the men in the ward I got the damn male nurse who whlist destroying my male glory told me all about his relationship problems. Oh please inject me and get me to the surgeon.

As I was wheeled into the operating theatre I was a bit afraid as 4 nurses and doctors where there. The nurse injected my hand and the feeling was unreal, it was like a bee sting just slowly travelling up my arm, I was later to discover it was liquid Diazapam. I felt really relaxed now and as I turned my head I saw 3 large screens which were showing as the main movie my heart.

They slowly inserted the tube inside my thigh and I watched it go slowly into my body and watched it's path up and into my heart. Wham, a black dye was sprayed out of the tube and all I could see was the arteries slowly filling up like a map on the screen. All but one which was the blocked artery and that was the one the drug coated stent was going in.

They removed the tube, attached a small balloon plus the stent and inserted it again. Slowly again it worked itself inside my heart but this time the tube pierced right inside my artery and the balloon was released. the balloon is inflated by the surgeon once it's right inside the artery and it opens the blocked artery so the stent can slide into place and like a piece of scaffold leave your artery open. It was a strange feeling, a mixture of pain like a heart attack and a strange sensation that can only be described as peeing oneself. Not that I pee myself, just guessing on that feeling. ! Once the stent was in place they delfated the balloon and slowly removed the tube from my body. In all the operation was 45 minutes and my artery was now stented, for me it was now back to the ward.

The Stent After-Care

After having the stent operation you have to lie on your back and not move for 2 hours, I guess being a man that part was really easy to do but you have to watch this stage as it is still bleeding heavy and one guy I befriended actually bled for well over 10 hours. Me, well I was lucky in that my bleeding eased off after the 2 hours, bleeding lucky I guess one could say.

Later on the nurse came round and explained that because it was a drug coated stent I would be on a drug called Plavix for a year to make sure that the stent didn't clog over with another blood clot. Plavix is a powerful drug that really thins your blood and can have a few side effects. In the year I was on it I suffered constipation but I guess I didn't give a shit as it was saving my life, come to think of it with constipation I actually didn't give a shit.

Alas the nurse also gave me the talk on what I could do and what I couldn't do. I wouldn't be able to drive for a few weeks, no problems there as I was told I had to take off work for two months. Naturally I was told to take things easy but also to make sure I walked about as this would help my recovery. Then she told me I wouldn't be able to have sex for about 4 weeks, I looked at my hand and said I hope you are listening. !

So that was it, I was fully stented and ready to go home the next day. Yes I was a little scared during the operation but at worse it was more uncomfortable than painful and it took only a week for the whole thing to heal. So if you are booked in for a stent and you are worried about the operation don't be, it will keep you aive which is well worth going through the operation for and it was the best movie I have watched in ages.

Tomorrow I will discuss getting fit after a heart attack and the best exercises to do, in the meantime take care of yourself. !

Another seemingly terrible event told in such finesse and humor that makes getting a stent--not sounding quite as bad! I enjoyed the good read my friend, -hugs- and take care.

great story telling and an experience I hope to avoid. Had nuff of my own. Too bad ya had that male nurse, I hate that too, oh well, they are needed as well, but a female doing stuff is so much easier innit? I had one male nurse insert a catheter, how humiliating. LOL

Thanks again. I'm sure your sense of humour will keep you and your hand alive for quite some time.

I just celebrated a person's 80th birthday. This person suffered an heart attack in his mid 50s. He's doing quite well, and is mentally and physically very much alive.

Love your hub. Just read it to my hubby who had a double by-pass twenty years ago in Oxford and last year he had an angio gram as part of Canadian Immigration process. He's just howling here as I read him this saying you are lucky, he had to shave himself which while waiting for open heart surgery is not the best time to be wandering around your nether regions with a razor. After the operation he asked if he'd be able to swim, to which the nurse replied "Of course you can.", and he said "Good because I couldn't swim before!". For the next couple of months every time he had a pain in his chest he went to the hospital and they eventually said if he wanted another heart attack, they could arrange one for him :D He loves your take on it and says most of the blokes in his ward had the same attitude as you and although in pain, they all had a great laugh.

Lol oh Viv you made me laugh with that being able to swim comment, nice to know he's retained his sense of humor. I like him have been at the hospital twice with twinges as well only to find out they were nothing but hey better finding out they were nothing than not going and wearing that old wooden overcoat for many a year.

Jeeez as for he had to shave himself, that is deff worse, to be fair the guy I got was actually not bad looking and had it been dark and I was drinking, well who knows. Tell him I am glad he is ok and keep me up to date with how he is doing, nice meeting you btw, god that was funny can I swim, love it ; )

One of my friends (a woman) had this procedure last year - now I understand what she went through, thanks! Too bad you didn't get the pretty redheaded nurse (but then you might have embarrassed yourself, so look on the bright side).

Marisa to be honest I actually fount the stent operation much easier than a visit to the Dentist, in a way I actually enjoyed it and found it interesting, hmmm does that sound weird. As for the pretty redhead nurse, most probably would have given me a relapse, thanks for your comment !

You make it sound so easy! I had to laugh at the shaving the down there part =). Just your luck to have a male nurse do it for you LOL. Did they also like attach something over your chest to monitor your heartbeat? They did that to me three years ago (not for a heart attack, something else). It's really great to have procedures such as this where you feel virtually no pain, the procedure takes less than 1 hour and you feel a lot better afterwards. Hope you're taking care of yourself (and your heart) now. Cheers Mate!

My heartbeat was actually monitored Emi by a little plastic clothes peg type item that was attached to one of my fingers and there were as I say 3 screens. One showed all the vital signs, heartrate, bloodpressure etc, the other 2 screens showed different angles of inside the heart.

Watching the black dye flowing through the good arteries was a scene I will never forget. Looking back I never thought of the risk of dying, I was just so amazed at the technology of it all. I shall be back later tonight with the next stage, cheers for your comment and your concern !

so THAT'S what a stent look like...you are very brave. i would have been so scared! that's weird that they have to shave patients all over like that...makes no sense to me but then again i am not a doctor. i like your hubs.

Thanks Cosette, funny thing is I went to Spain 5 months after the operation and because it's a metal stent I was expecting the buzzer to go off going through security lol, it didn't. I have no idea why the shave because they entered through the side of my upper thigh, oh well it grew back, jeeez why am I discussing my privates ; )

Hello, I am 38 yoa, i had a pretty good heart attack october 14th. The whole right side of my heart was 100 percent blocked and I am telling you, my whole life had changed. I am depressed like no other. I started exercise program, then had foot problems. Now that depression has kicked in I can't get myself to do anything but stay in the house.... Tell me what to do.. and I have had another heart cath like 3 weeks ago which hasn't helped my attitude.

Jayrayh - The depression afterwards is normal and almost 2 years later I still get it but you have to get over it. If you continue to dwell on it you will make yourself ill and if your depression continues see your Doctor, you take care ok !

HealthTip,

Great hub. I just found out what a stent looked like when I wrote about great new medical devices. I wish I had known about your article. I will try to link back to your article. Very well done. And for the fan of yours fighting depression and for other heart patients out there - try swim fitness, I motivate myself with the hot tub - IF the depression if bad - the hot tub is both before and after exercise. Your resting heart rate actually drops the moment you enter the pool. Depression with heart disease is the silent killer - it breds inactivity. Very difficult to combat. Hope that tip helps someone.

Kelly many thanks for adding that really valuable tip and I didn't know that about the hot tub. Myself I do a lot of cycling but I swim the odd time, as you say its getting up of yer backside and making the effort. Again thanks for yer comment and enjoy your weekend.
