Drug detox is all about freeing yourself from drug abuse. Drug detox is the period where you are helping your body to rid itself of the chemicals that have kept you addicted to drugs. Drug detox is also known as "cold turkey" and is the withdrawal process. In some cases, drug detox can last for over a week, and drugs detox can be very painful and dangerous in some circumstances, depending on the level of addiction and the physical makeup of the drug addict.

Drugs, it doesn’t matter if its heroin, cocaine and marijuana, alcohol, or prescription drugs, they all have chemicals in them. When these drugs are put inside a person's body, they leave a residue of chemical toxins behind them.

These chemical toxins are in the bloodstream, in the organs, in the fatty deposits, and in the brain. And they don’t do any good. So, the purpose of Drugs Detox is to rid the body of these unwanted chemical toxins.

Drug Detox

Usually drug detox is carried out as part of a drug rehabilitation program. The first requirement of any drug detox is that the patient stops taking drugs.

Depending on what drugs were taken, and how long they have been taken, the first few days of drug detox will involve withdrawal symptoms of varying intensity. At the lower level, the patient might experience insomnia, trembling, queasiness, headaches, dryness of the mouth, diarrhea, and night sweats. Towards the upper end, the symptoms may get more extreme. They may include severe vomiting, severe shakes, hallucinations and delusions, complete insomnia, and nightmarish dreams… when the patient can sleep.

It would be advisable for patients who have been long-term drug users or alcohol abusers to attend Drug Detox Centres. These are places where the patient can be looked after properly, and given proper medical and psychological treatment. I know this is going to sound strange, sometimes the patient may need to take drugs to combat some of the drug withdrawal symptoms. I think this might be preferred in cases where the patient is experiencing bad hallucinations.

Drug Detox

I just want to quickly mention some alternative and holistic drug detox paths a patient might follow. Of course, any of these methods must be used in conjunction with conventional medicine and treatments. One avenue is diet detoxification. I like this because it's not only teaching you how drug detox, but is also putting you on a good pathway to proper nutrition which can be used with the rest of your life. There is another one called herbal detox which can possibly be used in conjunction with the detoxification diet. And, there is reflexology, acupuncture, massage therapy, or one of the many treatments that are available. Again I must emphasize that I wouldn't condone using any of these treatments without at least getting the advice of a physician.

There is a treatment called rapid drug detox which involves the patient is taken into a Drug Detox Center. He is then put under anesthetic, and loaded up with detox drugs that strip away the chemicals that are causing the craving. When the patient wakes, they are virtually free from the addiction, with no need to go through a long drawn out withdrawal. There is no definite proof that this treatment works, and the cost is quite severe, around $15,000. But it seems like a humane way of dealing with drug detoxification without the need to put the patient through hell. Going through a Drug Detox Program is only the beginning. The patient must follow a long road to achieve recovery. And there really is no end to this road.
I think my worst addiction has to be nicotine. The cravings of this drug are still creeping up on me more than three years after I stopped smoking. Sometimes I feel that they are as strong as they were when I stopped. And they get me at the strangest times. I don't know if I will ever be free. I hope that you will be able to take something away from the drug detox hub.
