Dubrovnik - Journey to more romantic times
Dubrovnik in Croatia is stunningly preserved mediterranean city dating back to the 7th century. The word Dubrovnik residents cherish the most is freedom. Through the century Dubrovnik kept it independence through wise policy and trade. While other regions were under occupation, Dubrovnik flourished making itself the jewel of the Mediterranean.
These words written by Ivan Gundulic (the most celebrated Croatian baroque poet from Dubrovnik) perfectly express the meaning of freedom for Dubrovnik residents:
O beautiful, o beloved, o sweet freedom,
God has given us all the treasures in you,
you are the true source of all our glory,
you are the only decoration of this Dubrava.
All silver, all gold, all human lives
cannot repay your pure beauty!
Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Very nice Hub. My grandfather's family is from Dubrovnik, and we visit it every few years.
Thanks people.
SunSeven, if you want be able to swim in the sea too (lovely beaches in Croatia and totally clean sea), than you're best of in the middle June - middle of the September range (because of the water temperature) and if you don't care about that you can go at some other time.
livelonger, interesting to hear that! Hope you come again soon and have a blast ;)
Would love to go there, not heard much about Croatia before, sounds interesting. Now they are part of Europe, it will make it easy to visit there.
I will make a few more Hubs on Croatia shortly.
Jesi li Hrvat, Spacebull?
Da :) (Yes, translated into English :)
Drago mi je. :-) Dobrodosao u Hubpages!
Hvala :)
The photo identified as Sponza Palace is wrong. It's the Rector's Palace. Sponza Palace is in the photo but on the left in far background. Sponza Palace is at the end of Stradun (at the opposite end of Stradun from the Pile Gate). I know this because I was there in Sept. 2007, two months ago.
That was the only Sponza Palace photo I had available at the moment, so that's why I put it there. I didn't think it would cause confusion :) Anyway, thanks for making it more clear for other people!

Very interesting spacebull. "dubrava" can be roughly translated to English as "forest"! Which is the best season to visit?
